Casa Hamaca Guesthouse
Ranked #1 of 20 Valladolid B&B and Inns
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed January 22, 2008

Casa Hamaca is a retreat, a refuge, but mostly a haven to rejuvenate a stressed body, mind, and soul. Whatever you need, whatever you want, Denis and his staff can provide it--delicious local foods, information on local attractions, or interesting conversation.
Casa Hamaca is centrally located near bustling downtown Valladolid. But as soon as you walk along it's paths and through the fruit and flowering trees surrounding it, you feel as though you have stepped into a relaxing faraway spot. The randomly hanging hammocks and refreshing pool provide a variety of relaxation options.
The food, prepared with locally grown fruits and vegetables, was delicious. My favorite was the freshly brewed hibiscus tea.

This is definitely a place I will return to again and again.

We stayed at Casa Hamaca for three days during a twelve day trip through the Yucatan. Of all the places in our trip, the Westin at Cancun, the Hyatt at Merida, we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves at the Casa Hamaca. The place is charming, authentic, totally relaxing, and reminded us of staying in a house in the countryside with a very different experience from a hotel.

Dennis who owns the B&B, and Lina, who runs the day-to-day, are both amazingly welcoming people and will make anyone feel at home. We were traveling with two kids and mom, but due to a mix-up, our reservation was only for two people. Dennis and Lina were very flexible and were able to have an extra room for us.

The B&B itself is almost like a hand-crafted Mayan/Mexican experience. The walls have replica paintings of Mayan architecture, the kitchen and dining area are colorful mosaics of artifacts, and the rooms are uniquely styled based on different themes. The rooms also have really cool colorful hammocks which invite you to relax.

Dennis has planted a number of trees and flowers in the garden and this only adds to the beauty of the place. The staff is all Mayan and the breakfasts are excellent. Every day we had what was a combination of home-cooked Mayan breakfasts with fruit, juices and pastries. We met a couple of wonderful families, and one evening ended up having a dinner party in the guesthouse, with Dennis and Lina and everyone else, extremely unique for staying at a guesthouse, and representative of the warmth of the atmosphere and our hosts.

Our kids had an excellent time, explored the garden, swam in the pool, ran around like it was their place. The guesthouse works for families of all types, couples, families with kids, or older travelers.

This was our first trip to the Yucatan, in fact to Mexico, and our stay at Valladolid at the Casa easily ranks as one of our best ever.

We stayed at Casa Hamaca because of its proximity to Chichen Itza. But we loved this hotel for all sorts of reasons that had nothing to do with those ruins. First of all, the staff (mostly Mayan) was amazing. The food was local specialities, delicious, and served with graciousness. The hotel itself was relaxing and peaceful. We were treated like kings and would go back to this hidden spot in a heartbeat.
