“A beautiful place”
Reviewed September 20, 2011

When we arrived at the hotel in Valladolid, the entry way was blocked and under construction, so we could not actually drive into the parking lot. We thought maybe we had goofed in our selection, but once we got inside, the place was a garden of beauty, the staff very helpful and attentive, and the rooms very nicely decorated and furnished. We slept very well with the air conditioning-- don't try sleeping anywhere in the Yucatan without air conditioning!

We arrived on the eve of their independence celebration, so the next morning the cooks provided us a special patriotic breakfast, very tasty indeed. Our host (Denis) was super and made sure we were well taken care of. Our group of 4 couples all really enjoyed the ambiance and decor of this place. We certainly enjoyed our stay. Valladolid is an interesting little city as well.

We stayed at Casa Hamaca at the end of August. What A WONDERFUL hotel! Very clean with comfortable (not hard!) beds, a hammock for relaxing in (you could sleep in it too!), and a lovely bathroom. Breakfast was wonderful (Yogurt, fruit, coffee, breakfast rolls and huevos rancheros!) Dennis is the most accomodating, friendly host you will ever meet. His recommendations for restaurants and sightseeing were spot-on! It was so lovely to feel like a local while we were there, instead of a tourist! I only wish we could have stayed longer! Thanks Dennis!!!!!

We spent only one night at Casa Hamaca and wish we could have spent longer. We were staying in Akumal for two weeks, drove up Coba Road to Ek Balam early one morning, spent the afternoon and evening in Vallodolid, and got up and visited Chichen Itza early the next morning (before the tour buses arrived).

Our room (Ka'ab Na Suite) was spacious and nicely decorated with a large and lovely ensuite bathroom. The house was gorgeous and the plunge pool more than big enough for a lovely dip to help cool down after a hot morning spent at the ruins. The staff is so friendly and welcoming, full of smiles, and they graciously agreed to serve us a 6:30 a.m. breakfast (pastries, fruit, yogurt, granola, huevos rancheros, fresh juice and coffee) so we could get to Chichen Itza the moment it opened. And the location is not far off the main square (four short blocks) which means close to the action when you want it, but more secluded and quiet when you want that too. We loved being in a more residential neighbourhood and our daughter got a huge kick out watching the local kids get a swimming lesson in the plunge pool while we were there and out of going to a local family restaurant Denis recommended for dinner (Oasis) where we watched the Mexican music video channel and had yummy juice drinks, fajitas and pizza :)

But the absolute best thing about Casa Hamaca is Denis. We had such a lovely time talking with our host. He is so knowledgeable and well-informed and willing to share his experiences/knowledge, etc, without being overbearing. And having been to many other guesthouses, we know that's a hard line to straddle and he does it impeccably. You can tell how much he loves his community and it makes you love it too.

This is one of the best guesthouses I have encountered in my travels. This is mostly due to the fact that Casa Hamaca's operator, Denis, is an amazing host and an inspiring human being. He is a powerful and positive force in the community through his volunteer work and community partnerships. You will feel good staying here and supporting the efforts of this place.

You will also feel good because Casa Hamaca is just a really great place to spend a night (or more- 2 nights recommended!) The guesthouse is beautiful with gorgeous landscaping and interesting architecture, Mexican folk art objects throughout the place, the rooms immaculate, comfortable and decorated in a fun and unique way. The breakfasts were very generous and of extremely high quality- fruit, pasteries, huevos rancheros, fresh squeezed juice!! So much thought and care has gone into every aspect of this place.

Additionally, Denis has an extensive knowledge of Valladolid and was able to direct us to some wonderful adventures and experiences, perfectly tailored to the sort of activities and experiences we were interested in. Valladolid really became an unexpected highlight of our vacation.

We stayed here in the Jungle Suite for two nights during July. The host and staff are very welcoming and accommodating. The rooms are spacious and my husband was thrilled with the in-room wireless for his iPad. Our room also had provision for hammocks which was a big hit with the kids. Breakfast is cooked to order, substantial and delicious. The AC unit in the room was the quietest unit we encountered during our visit to the Yucatan. The windows were well screened which kept the bugs outside.

I would certainly stay here again, but there are a couple of things I wasn't wild about since we had a 2 year old in tow. There is a staircase leading up to the building, and stairs to reach the second story. Perfectly functional stairs, but it was a little nerve wracking watching my 2 year old teeter on the top step and insist on "I do it myself!" Also there is no in room TV, so you can't plunk the kids in front of cartoons for a few minutes while you pack. No in-room fridge, but we were welcome to use the one in the kitchen downstairs to store milk for the kids.

We always enjoy the shopping and atmosphere of Valladolid, and decided to spend a night at Casa Hamaca on our way to our more southerly destination. One night was not enough and next trip, we will spend more time at this perfect place. The location is great, the guesthouse is so incredibly beautiful, and Denis and his friendly staff really made our short and relaxing stay memorable. The gardens, pool, murals, and the mask & textile collections are so beautiful. The breakfast was terrific. The room, huge & clean. AC- what a plus! Great bathroom, too. So many thoughtful touches. Our friends who run a hotel in MX right away asked about the showers- fantastic! Nothing you couldn't love about Casa Hamaca. Thank you, Denis, your love is evident everywhere around your home. It will be our pleasure to meet you again.

I just stayed here with my two older teen aged sons. I chose this as a base for seeing Chichen and Ek Balaam. I didn't realize how much Valladolid itself had to offer. Denis, the owner is a wealth of info and provided fantastic restaurant recommendations and steered us in direction to see Casa de Los Venados, this is an amazing must see place. A fantastic restored "house" and an amazing collection of art.

We stayed in the earth room, very spacious and comfortable for 3 persons. Breakfast are awesome, staff is friendly.

Much more to see in Valladolid and I wouldn't think of staying anywhere else.

Oh and it is located next to a school so there is lots of local flavor. A couple kids invited my sons tons game of street soccer. They had great fun, two cultures together, laughing and appreciating the other through a common game, the advantage if staying in a neighborhood yet just a short walk to the main square.

Super easy to find if driving and off street parking.
