My wife and I stayed two nights at this hotel. It is an excellent choice in Vallodolid. The hotel is situated right on the square with an old world colonial charm that we never found in any other place we stayed at in Mexico in this price range. We paid a little less than US$80 per night for a superior room that was very comfortable. The room was spacious, had a queen size bed, plenty of wardrobe/dresser space, cable TV, ceiling fan and air conditioning, 2 bottles of complimentary drinking water each day. The rooms are to the back of the hotel entrance and therefore do not suffer from noise from the square. Our only complaint with the room was that there was just the one bedside lamp, which made it very difficult if two people wanted to read. The bathroom was neat and clean with plenty of hot water, even in the hand basin which is a rarity in Mexico - the opportunity to shave with hot water was very welcome! Basic toiletries were supplied. A minor complaint was that there was a lack of shelf space to spread our own toiletries.

The hotel has a terrific restaurant. If there is a better one in Vallodolid we didn't find it - not that we looked that hard because we were happy to eat here. We had a number of meals at the hotel and they were all good quality and reasonable priced. Coffee was very good. As was the service in both the restaurant, and hotel generally.

I couldn't fault El Meson Del Marques.

I was absolutely blown away by El Mason. My entire stay I felt like I was at a 5 star hotel in the 1950's. The building is a historic landmark and oozes class and charm. The breakfast is phenomenal, but stay away from the "local sausage" unless you are especially adventuresome.

Nine years previously we stayed across the zocalo at the Maria de la Luz, which was great, but this time we were determined to upgrade to this place. Due to its size, it may be a little impersonal, but overall it is the place to stay. Hardly tranquil either, but that was due to Valladolid getting a major facelift at the time we visited. Bothered us none however, we had a room at the top with wonderful views overlooking the zocalo, being woken up every morning by birdsong. Or birdracket, depending on your point of view. Meals are served in the huge courtyard, adorned with paintings and trinkets, and the place is an ideal base for visits to both Chichen Itza and the lesser known but more rewarding Ek Balam. All in all an excellent stay.

I have traveled to over fifty foreign countries...and this place, El Meson del Marques, is a favorite. In recent years Valladolid has undergone a face lift that leaves impressions of Oaxaca. The Zocalo has new pavers and paint. The cathedral has new lights. It seems even the birds in the square have been tutored in the fine art of enhanced song. This hotel is a must if you are planning to visit Chichen Itza in your own car. The restaurant is fabulous in a courtyard with a wonderful, dripping fountain. Flower petals from the trees fall on your table during dining. Try the various gazpachos... good stuff. I think Valladolid will soon become overly touristed... too bad... try to get there before it happens. Cenote Dtzinup, where you swim in an underground cavern, is worth checking.

We stayed here our first and last nights in the Yucatan and had a good experience both times. Rooms are spacious and clean with two bottles of purified water included free. Price for a "superior" room was very reasonable ($73 US) and the location is excellent. It's located on the main square and is easy to get to from the tollway. Also easy to get back out of the city. The restaurant in the main courtyard is charming and has good food and service. A great place to stay!

Normal, even if a little pretentious, hotel in downtown Valladolid. Less than average room and bath... I would have sold the paintings and the gilded mirrors and bought better mattresses and bed sheets instead.

The hotel possibly provides the best value in Valladolid, but do you really need to spend a night there? There isn't much to do in the town. Tulum is just over an hour drive from Valladolid and has the beaches and hotel/cabanas to chose from and Merida is has much more to offer as a colonial city.

The hotel is currently expanding to the next building and they have 24x7 CONSTRUCTION going on. When you check in and ask about the loud noises you hear, they say it ends at 7 pm. And probably it does, but then they work through the night and by 3 am the really get at it. We made a mistake of staying for two nights there using it as a hub to drive to Rio Lagartos. The second night i didn't get much sleep because of the construction.

Now when I think about it, we should have driven to Rio Lagartos straight from Tulum, and then off to Merida the same evening.

The good:
- Central location
- Clean large rooms
- Reasonable restaurant

The bad
- CONSTRUCTION
- Poor maintenance: Broken faucet in the shower room, door falling off the hinges
- Terrible coffee
