I was absolutely blown away by El Mason. My entire stay I felt like I was at a 5 star hotel in the 1950's. The building is a historic landmark and oozes class and charm. The breakfast is phenomenal, but stay away from the "local sausage" unless you are especially adventuresome.

Nine years previously we stayed across the zocalo at the Maria de la Luz, which was great, but this time we were determined to upgrade to this place. Due to its size, it may be a little impersonal, but overall it is the place to stay. Hardly tranquil either, but that was due to Valladolid getting a major facelift at the time we visited. Bothered us none however, we had a room at the top with wonderful views overlooking the zocalo, being woken up every morning by birdsong. Or birdracket, depending on your point of view. Meals are served in the huge courtyard, adorned with paintings and trinkets, and the place is an ideal base for visits to both Chichen Itza and the lesser known but more rewarding Ek Balam. All in all an excellent stay.

I have traveled to over fifty foreign countries...and this place, El Meson del Marques, is a favorite. In recent years Valladolid has undergone a face lift that leaves impressions of Oaxaca. The Zocalo has new pavers and paint. The cathedral has new lights. It seems even the birds in the square have been tutored in the fine art of enhanced song. This hotel is a must if you are planning to visit Chichen Itza in your own car. The restaurant is fabulous in a courtyard with a wonderful, dripping fountain. Flower petals from the trees fall on your table during dining. Try the various gazpachos... good stuff. I think Valladolid will soon become overly touristed... too bad... try to get there before it happens. Cenote Dtzinup, where you swim in an underground cavern, is worth checking.

We stayed here our first and last nights in the Yucatan and had a good experience both times. Rooms are spacious and clean with two bottles of purified water included free. Price for a "superior" room was very reasonable ($73 US) and the location is excellent. It's located on the main square and is easy to get to from the tollway. Also easy to get back out of the city. The restaurant in the main courtyard is charming and has good food and service. A great place to stay!

Normal, even if a little pretentious, hotel in downtown Valladolid. Less than average room and bath... I would have sold the paintings and the gilded mirrors and bought better mattresses and bed sheets instead.
