We stayed at El Meson del Marques from May 23rd - 25th, using it as our base to explore Valladolid and Chichen Itza after spending a week in Playa del Carmen and before heading on to Merida. We arrived early afternoon on the ADO bus from Playa del Carmen and took a taxi to the hotel. We were dropped off out front, which is where you would enter most hotels, but apparently the entrance is now on the back, around the block. (The front entrance is how you now access the restaurant). Since we were now standing in the doorway of the restaurant with all our bags one of the waiters felt bad and didn't make us walk all the way around, instead letting us enter through there. He lead us past the pool, through the courtyard parking lot, to the back lobby area so we could check in. Check-in went fairly smooth and we were given a room on the 5th floor sort of overlooking the pool.

The room was so tiny, and the bathroom even more so. But since we weren't planning on spending much time in there it was fine. It was clean at the very least. Unfortunately, the bed was rock hard, one of the worst I have ever slept on...even in Mexico. I tossed and turned all night as I could not get comfortable. And we stay in super-budget-friendly hotels all over, so we're not spoiled by luxury accommodations and just being picky here.

There were two double beds in the room, a tall wardrobe with safe, a dresser/desk area, tv, telephone, a/c and ceiling fan. The window overlooks the walkway that connects all the rooms on this side so people walking by to their room could potentially see inside your room if the curtains aren't drawn at all times. From there you can see down through the tree tops to the pool below. There is also a tiny patio on the street side that has an ugly view of the roof of the building below and part of the street. The patio can only fit one person at a time on it, it's that small. The bathroom was small, with a shower, toilet and sink area.

The hotel advertises as hiving wi-fi but it is not accessible in all areas all the time. Our first day we could find the signal in our room but it was too weak to connect, so we could only connect down by the pool or in the restaurant, which was very inconvenient. By the second day, after asking about it at the front desk, the signal seemed to be a little stronger, so we could at time connect in the room. I get that brick/stone/cement walls can affect the signal, but there are ways to assure all floors have a decent signal.

From the 5th floor you can access a public patio area that overlooks the restaurant below and the park across the street with the beautiful cathedral. Very pretty at night. There is also a bigger patio down one floor, as well. The pool area is nice, and there is a bar located right next to it.

We ate in the restaurant twice, once for lunch when we arrived and once for dinner. The food was descent, but it is definitely a little pricey. We tried the appetizer platter which had salbutes, panuchos, and other local Yucatecan delights, as well as the poc chuc and cochinita pibil -- all very tasty. The guacamole at dinner was also prepared table-side, which was a nice touch. We had a nice little table overlooking the water fountain.

Overall we found the place to be average, and the staff were ok. Would we stay here again? Probably not. The location is the best part, but there are a few other nicer small hotels/B&B's in our budget we'd like to try next time.

What a delight as we arrived in Valladolid. the hotel was right on the wonderful town square. The colourful buildings and beautiful women in colourful traditional native dresses. What a feast for the eyes this was. Our hotel was charming with large modernized rooms, mine with a balcony that looked down on the courtyard.
The restaurant was terrific. The food was tasty, some prepared at your table like guacamole. The staff was well trained, friendly, and the service was great.
The breakfasts were great.
I wish we had been able to stay another night to explore the town and enjoy the hotel.

Room Tip: ask for a room that looks downon the courtyard

Wow!! This hotel far exceeded our expectations (especially given the price) We booked based on location and the recommendation in our rough guide. The hotel was beautiful, the restaurant amazing, the staff very friendly and the town is really very pretty. Valladolid is a great base to reach Chichen Itza and there are some wonderful cenotes a short distance away. Well worth a stay here, we would highly recommend it.

We stayed at El Meson del Marques in April and had a fantastic experience. The service is friendly and efficient, the rooms are very clean and nicely decorated, the pool, gardens, fountain, restaurant, bar and everything were wonderful! Words don't really do this place justice--it has a real charm to it with all of the beautiful arcitecture and decor. The central courtyard with the tree growing through the center of the bulding all the way to the sky was magical, as was watching hummingbirds and butterflies buzz around the courtyard fountain over breakfast. In the morning you could watch them make your tortillas! The food was wonderful at every meal. The guacamole prepared at the table was a big hit, as were the delicious flaming desserts and entrees. The rooftop decks have fantastic views especially at night. This place is romantic, beautiful and peaceful. Plus the location is as good as it gets--right on the main square (Zocolo). This was our fourth trip to Valladolid and this hotel is, by far, our favorite place we've ever stayed. Our only wish is that we would have stayed longer! We will absolutely be going back to El Meson del Marques! You should not miss this hotel or the fantastic city of Valladolid!

Room Tip: I loved having a room over the pool--nice views and cuts down on any street noise. The rooms with the balconies that are large enough for table and chairs, in my opinion, were the best.

Really nice hotel in the center of the town. We particularly loved sitting in the court yard having dinner and breakfast. The swimming pool was a good size and very clean. The staff was very polite and helpful.

Room Tip: Ask to stay in one of the old rooms.
