“A Spectacular Collection of Mexican Folk Art”
Reviewed May 24, 2013

We recently brought guests of ours to see the amazing collection of Mexican Folk Art at the private museum, Casa de los Venados, in Valladolid. We had been there a year before and were so impressed by the art and by the house itself, so tastefully and lovingly restored, that we have been recommending it to all our visitors. The Venadors, owners of this largest private collection have created a perfect blend of art and setting, offering visitors a unique visual experience. There is no better place to gain an understanding of the creative spirit of the Mexican people. The guides on the 10 A.M. tours are informative and friendly and and it is a special bonus if you have the chance to meet John Venador, who often comes out to greet visitors. Discovering this unique gem has encouraged us to consider Valladolid worth more than a lunch stop.

“Remarkable”
Reviewed May 8, 2013

How often do you get to see something very special, and at the same time help those less fortunate. We went here on the recommendation of our hosts at La Selva Mariposa, and our visit turned out to be a visit we will not forget. Our guide, Francisco, with his "Brooklyn is King" tee shirt and NY Yankee hat (perfect for this NY couple) was knowledgeable and charming. The owner, John Venator was very gracious and welcoming, as was his wife Dorianne ( not to mention their great little Scotch Terrier.

What we have here is a beautiful and stunning house (ten years in the making) filled with the most incredible pieces of Mexican Folk Art you will ever see this side of Mexico City. After the tour you are asked to make a donation which will be used for local charities as well as to other charities through the owners' charitable foundation.

Do not leave the Yucatan without visiting this remarkable private house museum. A must see for art lovers and everyone else.

“Don't miss this place”
Reviewed April 28, 2013

We extended our time in Valladolid to take the 10am tour here, and we're so glad we did. It was just my wife and I on the tour - and it was fantastic. The house itself is amazing, and all the folk art is spectacular. It's free to go, but they suggest a 60 pesos donation at the end, which we were happy to give. We met John (the owner) who was super nice, and suggested some additional places to visit in Valladolid area as well.

“Spectacular folk art collection”
Reviewed April 22, 2013

Don't miss Casa de los Venados. This immaculately restored mansion is filled with folk art from many regions of Mexico. Every wall, counter, and corner holds yet another beautiful example of Mexico's finest. Our guide, Fredy, was fantastic–knowledgeable and friendly. Plan accordingly, the tours are limited. There is no fee but they ask for donations that support health services for kids. I wish I had more cash with me as I would have given more.
