“Awesome atmosphere, spotlessly clean and the funniest dogs in the world!”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 8, 2010

My boyfriend and I stayed here for 4 nights in a private room when visiting Mexico on a two month trip. The hostel is set up really well, it has a lovely outdoor kitchen that is well stocked with condiments etc and has everything you need to cook a good meal. There is a hammock area for relaxing in, the shared bathrooms were spotlessly clean the whole time we were there and our room was comfortable and secure. They also have big outdoor sinks with free washing powder for hand washing of clothes.
The owners were so friendly and recommend things for us to do in the area, they were very sociable and have the funniest two dogs I have ever seen.
It is situated in a lovely quiet area a few blocks from the main square and within easy walking distance of everything we needed.
All in all we really enjoyed our stay here and have since recommended it to fellow travellers. If you are looking for somewhere with a great communal atmosphere in a beautiful town, this is for you.

I visited this hostel while on a 5 week backpacking trip through the Yucatan Peninsula. I'm rating it as a hostel, not a hotel.

As a hostel, it's one of the nicest ones I've ever been in. Located in a quiet corner of Valladolid, yet only a short walk away from the center of town. There is a nice little park right out front, where you can sit and watch families play with their kids, old men chatting in the shade, and young couples kissing on benches.

Hostel Candelaria is kept very clean compared to many hostels I've been in, a woman comes in to clean the bathrooms and sweep up every day. Everyone that works there is very friendly, and the manager speaks English, Dutch, and Spanish.

There are two kitchen areas with plenty of room, one is open air. Breakfast is free, and nicer than many I've had.

There is no AC in the dorm rooms, but there are a couple of industrial size ceiling fans that keep air moving all night. I was here in the hot summer and slept fine.

As for security, nice big lockers for locking your backpack up. There is a gated entry in front to keep non-guests out of the hostel too. But Valladolid is a very safe town, it's probably not even needed.

Hot water is sporadic sometimes. But again, this isn't a hotel. For around $9 US a night, you can't complain.

Two hand wash laundry sinks outside in the sun near the garden will let you save money on washing your clothes, and everything dries quickly in the sunlight.

3 or 4 hammocks in the garden are perfect for taking a nap, reading a book, or chatting with other hostel guests from all over the world. I met a bunch of great people at the hostel too, and not a bunch of reckless party kids either, but intelligent, mature, and experienced travelers to share a beer and stories with.

You can rent bikes for $1 US an hour, and I highly recommend renting them and riding to the coolest cenote I visited on the whole trip, it's called Dzitnup and it's about 20 minutes by bike. The bikes are not very comfortable, that's probably the only complaint I have. But you see more of the town when you're on a bike.

Go to Dzitnup cenote early, like when it opens, so you can beat the crowd and have this incredibly magical place all to yourself!

Hostel Candelaria even has it's own mascots, a pair of twin Chihuahuas that run around looking cute all day. I highly recommend this spot if you're going to be spending the night, (or week) in Valladolid, Mexico.

It was my first time in Mexico, but I've stayed in other hostels. I was on a three week excursion with my 18 yr old son, when we found this place. We picked the city of Valladolid of a map and heard about the hostel, so we hoped for the best. We could not have dreamed of a better place to spend the next 2 weeks. Ewout, Tannia, and Rodrego quickly became what felt like friends. My son and I were treated with warmth and nothing but kindness. From the full kitchen outside in the common seating area, to the hammocks in the beautiful gardens. Having the pets around only added to the homey feeling. I really enjoyed realxing at night with both Ewout, and Tania talking about life till late in the evening. I not only highly reccomend this hostel, but am looking forward to bringing my daughter back next summer.

We wanted to be close to Chichen Itza to view the shadow pattern on the Castillo during the solstice. Valladolid is just 25 miles away. The town itself is charming, with many historic colonial structures. The hostel itself is one of those buildings, on a quiet side street and facing a small park where events are often held. While we were there a cultural exchange celebration was scheduled with another colonial city, Oaxaca. Colorful costumes, traditional and modern music, lots of food booths. The hostel gets a front row seat and you don't have to worry about a parking place.

We regretted allowing only four days in this lovely town. The hostel owners work tirelessly to make the place comfortable for guests. The inviting garden has hammocks for an afternoon siesta. The two communal kitchens are open all day until 10 p.m. OK, so you have to share bathrooms and showers, but these are kept very clean. It's not a hotel, so your room is not made up every day. An outdoor laundry area with a communal clothesline is a plus.

We met guests of all ages in the lovingly landscaped garden. Plenty of chairs and tables for reading, dozing, chatting, sipping a beverage while shaded by tall trees. The two resident chihuahuas quickly make friends and are really cute. The several resident cats sometimes mix it up with the dogs and that's fun to watch.

Several guests mentioned that they had planned to stay just a few days but lingered for weeks. Rooms are small and spartan, but there's free WiFi and large indoor lounges where books and musical instruments are on loan to guests. The owners (a charming young couple) aim to please with restaurant suggestions and touring ideas. There's a computer terminal in the lobby if you don't have your laptop. Smoking is allowed in public areas, and there is no elevator.

The hostel is a short walk to all downtown attractions. Don't miss the murals in the Municipal Palace on the second floor. This is a very safe town. We walked around the central park by the cathedral at midnight, after dinner, and heard a variety of birds loudly asserting their claims on each tree housing their nests. Delightful!

We are archaeology buffs, so being close to Chichen Itza, Ek Balam, Tulum, Muyil, and Yaxuna was the reason we chose Valldolid. We could have spent at least a week exploring Valladolid instead of using it as a hub for day trips. The plan is to return to do that, and of course we will stay at this hostel.

Everything you want in a hostel. Staff are fab, heaps of advice about what to do. There are two amazingly stocked kitchens (free oil, salt etc)...good chilled out common areas, a place to wash and hang your clothes (free washing powder).

The dorms have nice beds, and heaps of space, and cupbards which you are provided a lock for. Bathrooms are numerous and kept clean. There are two little dogs and cats, so it feels very homely.

You can rent bikes and head out to the Cenotes, its worth staying to do more than just Chitzen Itza.

There is only onw downside (other than the fact that I couldn't stay longer)....is that the church bells in the beautiful square the hostel is located on ring very early in the morning, which is good cause you'll want to be at the ruins ealry to avoid the buses.

Oh yeah and breakfast is great :) in the lovely outdoor area (the gardens are amazing).

Thanks Susie

We had a great time at La Candelaria. Beautiful garden, clean rooms and helpful hosts. Met interesting travelers. Good location to walk around the city. Breakfast was also good. Would certainly stay there again while visiting the area.

Loved this hostel. The chilled out atmosphere and friendly owners make it feel like a home away from home. I was a solo traveller and was going to stay one night; I regretfully left 4 days later. The owners are fun, regularly have bbqs for their guests and have lots of knowledge about the area. Easily the best place to stay in Valladolid and a contender for friendliest hostel in the Yucatan.
