“Excellent base for exploring Uxmal”
Reviewed April 29, 2011

Only stayed here for one night but the buildings and setting were very pleasant and the rooms were large and well appointed, although there was no telephone to communicate with reception. The location was ideal for exploring Uxmal and the décor of the hotel was very much in keeping with the “hacienda” style. However, as a nod to modernity, there was also a nice pool to cool off in after your visit to the archaeological site. Restaurant was reasonable but not the best we ate in during our stay in Mexico.

We had a wonderful visit to this hotel. Our purpose was to visit Uxmal. The hotel is located directly acrross the street, so it is very convenient. There were very few other guests, so it was nice and peaceful. Our room was lovely - large and comfortable. We had good food, although it would have been nice to have a bit more selection at breakfast. Dinner on the patio was delicious. The service was outstanding. When we arrived at the hotel, we had just about run out of gas, as we could not find a Pemex during our drive from Merida to Uxmal. Hipolito (I think that was his name), the front desk person, kindly found a 5 liter container, and went back into town with the hotel van to fill it up with gas for our car. We sat by the pool relaxing while he did this wonderful thing for us. Because of this, we will always have fond memories of our visit to Uxmal. The ruins are breathtakingly gorgeous - the hotel hired us a wonderful local guide - Jorge - who toured the ruins with us. A delightful visit...highly recommended

Incredible stay! The Hacienda surpassed my expectations. I have visited Uxmal once before but did not stay in the area. I found the hotel to be lovely, with beautiful, peaceful grounds and a lovely pool. Very quiet too. Cleaner than expected. The rooms are basic, as are most in the more remote regions of Mexico, but very enjoyable overall.
Uxmal ruins are about 500 meter walk just across the street. My teenage daughters loved it!

We actually much preferred the restaurant at the Uxmal lodge just across the street.

Bottom line: clean, quiet, nice pool, great price.

What a great to place to stay while exploring Uxmal and the Puuc Route. Everything you could ask for - beautiful room, great swimming pool, terrific staff, great location and sooooo relaxed!
There is a huge amount to explore in this part of Mexico and Hacienda Uxmal is in easy driving distance of everything. And you can WALK to the Uxmal ruins. It would be easy to spend many days here.

Located within 5-10 minutes walk of the archaeological site of Uxmal, this hotel has a relaxed atmosphere.
The hotel rooms were large, clean and with all the facilities you could need for a short stay. I would like to warn visitors not to store suitcases etc on the floors near to the doorways into the bathroom as several members of my party had a problem with water flooding their bathroom floors and leaking into the bedrooms.
The food offered in the hotel was of a good standard, but could be repeatative for those staying for more than a couple of nights. However, the chef was more than willing to cater for special requirements or vegetarians; make any such needs known upon arrival.
The staff were very pleasant, and dealt with any enquiries well.

What a beautiful building and pool area! Plus it is a short walk from the Uxmal ruins. It is amazing how many "famous" people have stayed here - from actors to US presidents to European royalty - and the room was less than $100. The manager even offered us a complimentary shot of tequila from his amazing stock. Highly recommended.

…but now is merely passable. My husband and I arrived late in the afternoon for the light & sound show, and checked out about 9:00 the following morning to tour the ruins, so we did not get the chance to fully explore and experience the hotel, but I left feeling as though I hadn’t missed anything.

First of all, Hacienda Uxmal and the ruins of Uxmal in general are oriented towards large tour groups, of which there seemed to be at least six, at the time we were there in mid-November. Since we were touring on our own, half the time we had to flag down help and figure things out on our own. The Hacienda is a large old property which is quite charming visually, and there are prominent photographs of all the celebrities who have stayed there, from Jackie O to Grace Kelly and European monarchs. Unfortunately I don’t think the hotel has been updated since the time these celebrities visited.

We were assigned the “JFK Jr. Room” which is in the 300’s and is located directly above the breakfast restaurant in the center of the hotel. The room was clean and spacious, but that’s about the only positive thing I can say about it. There was no in-room safe, the beds must have belonged to the Flintstones, and the A/C control required a Ph.D. to operate. The bathroom was even worse – a large skylight took up most of the ceiling, which removed any sense of privacy one might have about things typically done in a bathroom, and to my dismay, the corner shower not only had no shower curtain, but apparently had never had one, as evidenced by the lack of a shower curtain rod or any device to contain spillage. There was also a rotty smell emanating up from the shower drain, which we somewhat diminished by using one of the bath towels to cover the drain that night. My shower the next morning succeeded in spreading a good amount of water over most of the bathroom floor, making it dangerously slippery. I also saw a little lizard in the tub.

At about 6:00am the next morning, music started pumping in the room below us, which we came to discover was the breakfast restaurant. Luckily we were getting up anyway but it was still unpleasant. The breakfast buffet was the only option and was passable, albeit with a limited selection. At least it was reasonably priced. We had to find a front-desk clerk to check us out, since apparently all the tour groups had already checked out, I think the front-desk person was on coffee break.

Overall this hotel was pretty to look at but merely tolerable to stay at. Fortunately we were only there for about 12 hours total and the price as well as our expectations were low. If we ever go back to Uxmal we will try a different hotel so I cannot recommend Hacienda Uxmal.
