Owner description: The ruins of an ancient Mayan city.

We went to 4 ruin sites in Mexico (Chichen Itza, Uxmal, Tulum and Coba). Uxmal was my favourite by far. There were not as many tourists, you could walk up some of the temples, it was hugs with lots to see and really was beautiful.

The prices in the souvenir shops were some of the best around as well. Much better than the shops near resorts for sure.

I would highly recommend it!

Just an hour to hour and half outside of Merida, Mexico are the great Mayan Ruins of Uxmal.
I have traveled Mexico 30 times and the Yucatan is for the best. Merida the beautiful capital city and the Ruins of Uxmal not far from the city would be a world class vacation. See the great ruins in the jungles of the Yucatan , with limited crowds in the summer especially and now specifically because of the reduced tourism to Mexico makes this trip incredible. If you are nervous about violence in Mexico it is not here. I have never felt safer anywhere walking in the evenings alone or in group it is just peaceful. The culture that is available to experience and the history of the Mayas cannot be found in more abundance anywhere. Take a trip to Merida. Hotels of any type and price can be found .Good food , shopping , culture. This is not beach vacation. The gulf of Mexico 40 minutes away but more people come for the Mayan adventure. I have never seen ruins that were so magnificent and the Light and Sound show in the evening with english translations is a must . To sit under the black starlit sky and watch the pyramids light up and change colors while listening to the story of a Mayan princess and the importance of rain to their survival is an experienfce not available in many places on this planet. Go and enjoy

Some what more difficult to visit form the coast but well worth the trip especially if you are in Merida region. Much better preserved buildings with more intricate work than any building in Chichen.

We visited a lot of ruins in Yucatan but felt this was the best, even better than Chitzen Itza. You could really imagine people living there as it was very compact. We went round early morning before the coaches arrived and had the place to ourselves (with our guide). It really is a must if you are touring Yucatan.

I've been to 4 other Mayan ruins and this is by far the most impressive and interesting ruins I've ever seen. You could easily spend hours upon hours exploring Uxmal. There are a few nice gift shops, restrooms, etc. A must see if you are in the area.
