We've just returned from our third trip to MGB in five years. El Placer, the official location of the hotel is 30 or so kilometers north of Majahual. It is the middle of nowhere, is the anti-Cancun and Playa del Carmen, and is the place to go if you want to completely relax, get away from crowds, and have a beach to yourself.

The beds are comfortable, the rooms and cabanas are spacious, the water is hot, and the food is great (be sure to take the meal plan as there are no other restaurants close by). Marcia (the owner) goes out of her way to accommodate food issues (my partner is allergic to crustaceans and gluten) and during the family style dinner we've met and had conversations with many interesting people from all over the world. My seventeen year old daughter says that she can't think of a better place to spend spring break -- she claimed her hammock and happily did her homework reading of James Joyce and Hamlet.

The hotel is a long way from Cancun (four hours drive) but we've used it as our jumping off point for exploring the area in southern Quintana Roo and the Mayan ruins in Campeche (be sure to check out Becan)

If you want spa, entertainment (like TV, movies, live performance) and crowds, stay closer to Cancun. If you want peace and quiet -- a hammock from which to read a good book, a lovely deserted beach, snorkeling and sea kayaking, then consider the MGB.

After much research we chose 1 week of our 2 week holiday in Mexico here. We were celebrating our 30th anniversary and loved every minute of our stay! Marcia and Kim (her husband) were the most gracious and helpful hosts. If you are looking for INCREDIBLE FOOD and a RELAXING INTIMATE ATMOSPHERE with a private beach setting with fabulous snorkeling right out front - then I think you have found it with Mayan Beach Garden!
My husband was also able to get his Divers Open Water certification in Mahahual while we were here, which was an amazing experience for him. Although the trip into town was about 30 klm, we wouldn't have traded the location for anything. Thanks again to all and the wonderful staff!

I know I am incredibly late in responding to this, but it is taking a while to respond to everyone. I loved your review, and I'm sorry we are located far away too, but if we were closer to Mahahual, we would have to deal with the crowds. I'm glad you chose the road less traveled and love your pictures!

Our trip for four days to Mayan Beach Garden was great- it is located twenty kms north of out-of-the-way Mahahual (which is mostly a cruise ship ghetto) on a beautiful, sparsely populated 3 mile long beach. Snorkling is good right off the beach in front of the hotel, but is even better if one walks ten minutes up the beach. The snorkling there is great for kids who may be less than confident in that the very unspoiled reef is in water that is only three to six feet deep.
The owner/hosts of the hotel, Marcia and Kim are very congenial and helpful. Kim is very interested in Mayan sites and he is a good resource for which ones to visit and is full of good advice and interesting stories.
This is a small hotel, so expect friendly and informal service. The food is good, but generally unless you make a special request (there is a menu), everyone eats the special of the day for lunch and dinner. Everything we had was delicious. We enjoyed chatting and eating with out fellow guests and the owners. Be sure to take a book! This is a place to enjoy the outdoors and relax.

We have been the the MBG twice and are currently booking another trip! We love the beauty, solitude, friendly staff, & seclusion of The MBG!! Where else can you spend all day on a beautiful sandy beach without seeing another soul? Snorkeling & boogie boarding literally steps away from your cabana - just depends on what you are in the mood for that day!! The food, rooms, and staff (as well as the owners Kim & Marcia) are all fabulous! If you like the idea of having a beautiful beach to yourself, 3 terrific meals served to you everyday (as well as pico, guac, chips, & margharitas on your patio), no electronic interruptions (unless you want them); then the MGB is the place for you!!

Just back from Mayan Beach Garden, and I can't say enough good about it. We were after a few days of total relaxation, and we found it at MBG. Our ocean front cabana was right on the beach and the sound of the waves was heaven for me. Our king size bed was really comfortable, and we slept well. The gardens were lovely and well tended. The beach was really clean, the sand was soft as silk, the breezes were healing, and the hammocks made you want to read all day. It was hard to decide between a hammock or a lounge chair at waters edge with no one around. Marcia and Kim are wonderful hosts and will visit with you or answer your questions as much or as little as you want. Their staff of 6 are superb and everything was really clean. They email you ahead of time to ask your food likes and dislikes as lunch and dinner are a set meal, and a really good value. Breakfast is a choice of banana pancakes or several delicious egg dishes with fresh fruit. Dinners include several courses. ALL the food was fresh, local, and delicious!!! There is snorkeling available or ocean kayaking, lots of amazing ruins to visit if you want a more active day. Mayan Beach Garden is a bit of a drive from Cancun, we were glad we stayed in Cancun first so we could arrive early in the afternoon. Marcia's website is full of great information to get you there safely. We rented a car at the airport for a reasonable price. We had our credit card email our coverage so we didn't need CDW but you always need to buy liability insurance in Mexico, it was only $10 a day. If you are looking for an amazing out of the way place, you can't do better than Mayan Beach Garden.

We wanted a nice place off the beaten path where we could snorkel coral reefs right off the beach and look for beautiful birds in the coastal jungle afterwards. Our trip to Mayan Beach Garden fit the bill perfectly! The rooms are comfortable, the food is excellent -- their "meal plan" is convenient, tasty, and economical -- highly recommended. The staff is courteous and friendly; most importantly, Marcia truly puts her guests' needs first, resulting in a low stress, incredible vacation experience. We will definitely be returning.

My husband found the MBG site while browsing for some place other then a large resort to stay on the Yucatan. We took a bus from the Cancun airport to Playa Del Carmen. You can purchase the ticket right at the airport and buses run every hour for about $5.usd. We spent the first night in Playa del Carmen at an inexpensive hotel. In the AM, we went back to the main bus station on quinta and traveled to Mahahual. The ADO bus was so comfortable, watching movies. We arrived in Mahahual (get off at the second stop near the ocean). We were able to take a taxi for $20. usd to MBG, which is about 30 km. From the moment we arrived, it was heaven. This is remote but right on the water. If you are looking for a very quiet spot where you can truly learn what the word “relax” means then this is your place. The cabanas are roomy, comfortable beds, bottled water, solar showers, beautiful tile work and western toilet. The grounds are nicely landscaped. The food was beyond good. The communal meals and conversation with other guests and owners Marcia and Kim, was great. After 3 days, we ventured back to Mahahual to shop and ended up renting a car so we could travel to areas suggested by Marcia. We traveled to ruins and remote beaches, snorkeling and just enjoying everything. After a week, we returned the car and took a bus back to Playa del Carmen for another 3 days before returning to the US. I have suggested MBG to many travelers and I know of one co worker who went to MBG and could not stop talking about the trip. This was the most wonderful vacation of my life. You have not lived until you have visited MBG. You will be dazzled by its charm, the Caribbean, the owners and listening to the adventures of other guests and I guarantee you will be pleased. I have already booked another trip and encourage you to be adventurous. Avoid the large resorts that cater to Americans and visit the real Mexico, you';; be glad you did.
