We took a tour of the Mayan Ruins with our cruise line and we had so much fun!I began with the "oh great, a pile of rocks," mentality but our guide gave us an excellent history lesson and the ruines were beautiful. Highly recommended.

This is a fun packed adventure that begins with boarding the "Jaguar Bus". It is an open air bus that is brightly painted and distinctive. Orlando, one of the friendly guides met us at the pier and led our group to the bus. The first stop is to a private ranch, where we paired up and rode tandem mountain bikes about a half mile to what our guides called a Mayan "Cenote", which is basically an underground cave filled with water from subterranean rivers. The cenote we visited was relatively small, and we took turns descending into the cenote and emerging a short time later on the other side of the cave. A cool experience. If you do this excursion I recommend a good pair of water shoes like Teva or Keene's, not the cheap ones you get at Walmart or Target. Orlando and Perla explained how and why the ancient Mayans used cenotes and how they worked. They also shared their knowledge of the local flora and fauna around the ranch before we got back on our bikes and boarded the bus for a short ride to a private beach. You will definitely want to bring a towel and perhaps something dry to change into if you choose to get into the water. The picture below is what it looks like. It was fantastic. The water is crystal clear, and the sand is soft. As you can see, there are plenty of chairs and beach toys to play in the water while our guides prepared a simple lunch of chicken fajitas and a quesadilla. We felt this was a wonderful excursion, and a great way to see Costa Maya or more appropriately, Mahahual.

Casey & Abel works for Native Choice Office.I highly recommend this particular tour if you 're into cultural history.Casey gave us a very good history of the Mayan people & its culture. Abel was our driver & very good & safe behind the wheels. Our lunch with Dona( pronounced
"donya") Adela, her 2 daughters & 2 other very kind ladies prepared a sumptuous Mayan meal for everyone in the tour for ms Ryndam guests 3/14/2014.

Booked this excursion last-minute through the ship, and was more than pleasantly surprised at the quality of the narration throughout the tour, as well as the quality of the tour itself. Visited a typical Mayan home and toured the entire property with great explanations of the history, the effects of technology on the culture, and the current way of life. Enjoyed every aspect of this segment of the tour! Excursion also stopped at a small ruin in the center of town, with extensive narration about the site itself, it's relation to the larger ruins in the vicinity, and the history of its excavation. This was an excellent excursion for those unable or not wishing to navigate long rugged paths and steep hills. Very entertaining and enriching, and a great way to spend a few hours at this port. Highly recommended!

Since we wanted to enjoy the local community while in Costa Maya, we booked the Mayan Reality Tour through our cruise staff on the Norwegian Epic. We visited a Mayan family (with Cruz as our tour guide) who showed us around their home and property, how they live and even prepared a snack of taquitos for our group. This was an awesome way to see how a modern day Mayan family lives. After our stop with the Mayan family, we then ventured on to a Mayan Temple ruin. Cruz was full of knowledge and told us all about how this temple was found, the excavation process and the history behind the Mayan people. I would totally recommend this tour for anyone interested in the history of the Mayan people!
