Owner description: Costa Maya Shore Excursions for guests from all cruise lines.

Recently my boyfriend, his family and I took a 7 day cruise that stopped at Costa Maya. Before the cruise, we did some research on excursions and came across the Native Choice group. After reading the great reviews, we decided to go on the Mayan Experience tour, which gave us time to see the temples of the ancient Mayans at Chachoben and life in a modern day Mayan village.
We started our excursion by walking a few blocks outside of the port to the Native choice office. We were then placed in a comfortable van with Miguel as our driver. The car was comfortable and Miguel was prepared with multiple bottles of water and lots of umbrellas in case of rain. Our tour guide Frine was great. Her knowledge of the Yucatan peninsula, the food, culture, and history was immense and she shared this information with us in an interesting and personable manner. From the Native choice office we drove about 40 minutes to the ruins. On the way we passed a small town known for growing pineapple. I highly recommend stopping and buying some pineapple coated with chili powder off the side of the road. That was the sweetest pineapple I have ever tasted.
Our time at the ruins was great. Frine gave us enough time to explore the temples and take pictures. She was able to explain the layout of the Mayan temple plaza and also point out the plants that were actually used in Mayan times. After some time at the ruins we made our way to a modern Mayan town. We got to see how modern Mayans lived in the modern world. We were also able to learn how to make tortillas by hand and partook in an amazing feast which consisted of chicken tamales. braised Chicken, harbanero and onion salsa, fresh tortillas, sweetened hibiscus tea, and an amazing flan. We then headed back to port. I highly recommend this excursion.

We booked a tour to Kohunlich on our own, reaching Costa Maya from our cruise ship. We had very easy to follow directions and walked right to the Native Choice office. As it happened, we were the only ones booked for the Kohunlich tour, so we had a personal tour by Erick, driven by Raul. Erick was very knowledgeable about Mayan culture (because he is Mayan!) and informed us about the history and culture past and present of the Mayan people. This made the drive to the ruins go very quickly. We were able to get a better tour, in my opinion, because we weren't on a big bus tour. Erick was able to answer all of our questions without being rushed. Our only regret is that we couldn't spend more time at Kohunlich, because of our ship's sail time. Great experience!

Casey did a fantastic job explaining the Mayan culture and the ruins. We especially liked the small vans with a group of 12 over the herds on the cruise ship buses. We booked a package that included lunch at a remote but beautiful place on a lagoon where we kayaked and just chilled for two hours. Glad we chose Native Choice. Well organized, clean vehicles, and excellent English.

I can't say enough about this tour and our tour guide Kaci. We got to visit the Chacchoben Mayan ruins and get a glimpse at Mayan life in the past and then to top it off a visit to a Mayan household of the present. What great fun getting to make our own tortillas then sit down to an excellent lunch - the dessert (homemade flan and fresh fruits) were the icing on the day. One the trip there we got to stop and get some pineapple-it was so sweet and delicious. We were with a group and booked through Shore Trips and not the cruise line-so glad we had that option. It was just a short walk to the Native Choice office and easy to find. This was our last excursion of the cruise and we so enjoyed it.

We were initially booked for the Dzibanche Mayan Ruins tour. When we arrived at Native Choice, we were advised that the roads leading to Dzibanche were bad. It was our choice if we wanted continue to Dzibanche and have less time there or to switch to the Kohunlich and have more time at the ruins. We made the switch to Kohunlich and am glad we did. Frine was our tour guide and Vertiz was our driver. We were in great hands with both of them. Among all of our Mayan tours, Kohunlich was our favorite and it was mainly due to Frine and Vertiz. Frine was very knowledgeable and took the time to answer all of our questions.

If you are ever in Costa Maya, I highlight recommend booking an excursion through Native Choice. If possible, see if you can arrange to have Frine as your tour guide because she was exceptional.
