We went against the warnings of our cruise director and took a cab to the small town of mahahual. We had read about the Tropicante on Trip Advisor, but did not get the chance to make a reservation. We figured we'd pop in and see, and Steve was there with his wonderful staff who went out of their way to get us a table and an umbrella.
The beer was cold and good food a plenty. I found the prices were very reasonable and the portions large.
Steve hung out with us for a bit and offered up plenty of history and knowledge of the area. Our server spoke English, which we did not expect, but was handy since we were a bit rusty. He made our kids necklaces from a local seed/nut by hand. He even shimmied up a tree to fetch a coconut, then took the kids to the side and chopped it open with a Machete, so they could taste. ( I will say, I was a bit unsure about them trotting off to a garage area with a stranger, a machete, and a power drill in a foreign country, but it was all good.)
I am planning a trip back to mahahual because 1 day was not enough. There is plenty to do. We did a banana boat ride and snorkeling.
What a great place!
