“Best Hotel in Mahahual”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 12, 2010

I was at the 40 cañones last June with my family that came from Argentina and we really have a wonderful time the beach is so beautiful, the atmosphere that creates a small village is priceless.

Andrea (Italian) the owner is always there to assist you, he and all Staff made me feel like i was at home, i am in the accommodation business so i always have that eye to see details. I was surprised that all staff say hello to you at anytime and they are always there to assist you.

Waiters and bartenders are the best all time around to see what you need.

Rooms are nice and comfortable, air condition, spotless, well decorated, ours did not have TV but we didn´t need it as is so nice outside to stay watching TV.

I really recommend this place we spent a great time enjoying the Hotel and the beach.

Hotel has nice rooms, great beach and good service, but if you want to sleep in, you are at the wrong place. Bar and restaurant is underneath the rooms, so you hear every sound. I would fall asleep when the last guest leaves and wake up in the morning at 6 am sharp, since that was the time staff would start cleaning the bar area, shuffling the chairs and tables. They are setting up the place in the morning like there is nobody staying (sleeping maybe) only meters away. So, if you want to get some sleep in the hotel, make sure you bring ear plugs.

Mahahual is a sleepy, fishing village just north of Belize and a 4 hour drive south of Cancun, on the Costa Mayan coast of Mexico. This is a beautiful place with gobs of charm. Service is good, and food is good. We were there to dive and this was an excellent place to stay and dive. The hotel is in town and you look out over the "boardwalk" of Mahahual and the beach from the outside dining room and bar. There is also an inside dining room. There is plenty of hot water and A/C - modern and very clean bathroom with equally clean room and daily maid service. No phone or TV, but you really don't need one - you're there to relax after all!

You can rent a car in Cancun and drive down, or can arrange for a transfer service out of Cancun. You can not rent a car in Belize City and drive through Belize/Mexican border - this is not allowed by the rental companies. It's nice to have a car there, and the car rental isn't all that expensive. The dive is a safe and easy drive with most of it limited-access, 4-lane. South of Akumal it is 2-lane, however it has a wide shoulder which makes it easy to pass slower vehicles. Stop in Akumal and get some gas - and then you will have enough to mosey around Mahahual and to get you on the return to Cancun and the next gas station.

Do take some bug/sand flea spray as in any beach, these are pests to deal with. Usually there is a breeze, and if there is - you don't need the bug spray, but nice to have it if you need it.

Mahahual was bull's eye hit by Dean, a Cat 5 hurricane, 8/07 and is in the process of recovering, in a couple of years, this place will be as lush and beautiful as any paradise. It is still a little torn up from hurricane, however the charm, friendliness and safety of the small village is so delightful, that it makes a stay there very nice. I felt very safe, even walking a mile to the dive operation at night didn't feel threatened, except by the sand fleas!

Our first night into town, the crabs were mating (or something) and were all over the road. After you get past the mangroves, they are few if any, but thought this was charming! We dove with DreamTime which was a short walk from 40 Cañons and very good operation. The reef is recovering faster than topside. It is a beautiful reef which is very easy to dive - mostly shallow - up to 60 feet to 90 feet deep - and even though you can see the broken reef from the hurricane, the marine life and gorgeous and plentiful. For larger marine life, you will have to go out further and deeper. Excellent place to dive for expert and newbies as well.

I will return as the diving and living is easy in Mahahual.

  • Liked — It was so charming without being hokey
  • Disliked — Hard to get wi-fi or internet service - this will be fixed when more recovery from hurricane.
