“holiday at the sirenis”
Reviewed October 2, 2013

just got back from the grand sirenis mexico. stayed there for 12 days and arrived on the 19th September. first of all flew out with Thompson from Gatwick on the Dreamliner. we booked in the day before and they were doing a special on extra leg room seats. 2 for £50 so we upgraded. great flight so we did the same coming back..
the transfer from cancun is about 1.5 hours and after a 10 hour flight it turns into a gruelling day. arrival at the hotel and booking in was good. we had the normal junior suite which when we got into the room was fine. a bit tired looking but nothing really wrong just in need of updating. great bathroom with a walk in shower and a spa bath. you are housed in blocks and each block has its own concierge desk manned daily for booking restaurants and notifying any problems with the room etc .the set up is well thought out with transport (golf carts) driving through the ground floors and picking people up and dropping them off at various locations. the resort is big. tip the driver 20 pesos and you will get plenty of drivers picking you up.
most people head for the two lobby bars in the evening where you get the premium branded drinks. the service is good and the measures generous. next to the lobby is the show hall with a different show on each night some good some ok but overall worth a look. the hotel show team work hard and are very entertaining.
the main pool has a swim up bar and a lot of activity volleyball etc. can be noisy but most of this is at one end and you can choose the other end if you don't want to participate. the cocktails are great and the beer is corona on tap. there are two other pools which are quitter and there is the beach which is good, serviced with a snack bar and drinks. waitresses come around frequently and again a small tip ensures another round.
the beach is sandy but going into the sea there are rocks and pebbles but you soon work out where to enter through the sandy bits and we did not need to wear any shoes. we did quite a bit of snorkelling and it is clear warm water with a bit of coral and a lot of fish.
we went to swim with the turtles on akumel beach. it cost 60 pesos for the bus nothing for the swim and we saw 5 turtles. the bars are good on akumel beach and on the way back a taxi driver took us to the hotel for 60 pesos.a great day and you don't need to pay through the agents $40 each for only 2.5 hours. we did chitzen through thompsons but some other people told us they went via the hotel and it was the same trip but £50 cheaper. we went to coco bongos and had a great night. got back at 4.30 am so its a late one but well worth it.
overall the hotel is good. the Japanese and brazillian restaurants are the best and you will always find something in the buffets which also have cook stations for fresh fish, steaks and pasta so I was a bit surprised to read reviews stating poor choice.
we did the premier club meet which is optional. the presentation is very professional .the club rooms are awesome and at the end you get a free spa and massage worth £200 to take at your convenience. the spa is fantastic.you will have to make your own mind up about joining the premier club.
the hotel staff are generally very good. the hotel is very clean and we met a lot of people who were enjoying there holiday as we were so for the bad reviews on this hotel I would say this, yes it is not top notch 5 * but its good and we had a great time.

We stayed from 5/9 to 19/9 , and had a brilliant holiday, weather could have been better but we made some lovely friends , specially Susie and Marie and Mark.As previously stated in reviews the hotel is big but once you get used to it you will find the shortcuts .The staff are one of this hotels greatest assets , special thanks go to the beach bar staff namely Paulina , Esperanza and Graziela who despite the bad weather kept us happy with their efficient service and happy chat. I'd like to mention Ambrosius and his fellow gardener who spent hours a day clearing the seaweed from the beach that the storms were washing up ,they worked so hard . A big thank you goes to Freddie in the Tulum buffet who always brought us our drinks and looked after us .Our room was in Kukultan block and was looked after by Mathilde ,it was always lovely and clean .
My only complaint was the lack of another bar at night , the lobby bar was impersonal and too big and open ,especially with the weather being so wet , a beach bar open at night would have been a nicer option , but it was still a wonderful holiday would we go back YES but when the weather is more settled , keep up the good work , especially loved all the wildlife.

The hotel facilities in general look old and neglected for a 5 year old building. After the first night we asked to be relocated to a different room due to a nasty bug infestation, little crawlers all over our mini-bar, bathroom and beds! Another room had a condensation leak from the a/c system into the bathroom.

It seems like you have to be reminded all the time that you are getting an "all Inclusive deal", the food quality and selection is poor, the drinks are "the house brand" and you even have to pay extra for an additional room card key in case you lose yours or it simply stops working.

The hotel personnel is friendly and dedicated but even though they cannot ask for tips, it is always implied in the service quality, "the more you pay, the better we treat you" , especially in the pool bars.

The cherry on the cake was the highly unprofessional service that we received at the hotel's doctors' office. My 3 year old was constipated, and the doctor told us that he needed x-rays to make sure it was not appendicitis, unfortunately they don't have an x-ray machine at their office, so after charging us $105USD for a 10min consultation, they referred us to the closest private hospital in Playa del Carmen called "Hospiten", where according to on-line reviews, they will not treat you until your credit card has cleared. The most concerning part is when you realize that there are posters and flyers of "Hospiten" all over the doctors' office at the hotel... what is the need for such marketing? That is when you understand that the sole purpose of this person is to refer you to Hospiten no matter what your condition is, as long as you are a tourist with or without medical insurance... My son got better after a lot of water and rest, he was playful and happy that same night, but what if I had only listened to this thieves and acted on the impulse of fear for my son's health? Thank God for my wife that had a more composed reaction and asked me to wait. They don't really care if they ruin your vacation or if they put you under huge stress with a medical urgency diagnosis on your little ones. Really unethical behaviour. Sad.

Room Tip: The closest to the lobby area the better. There is a lot of walking involved and bell boy shuttle dr...

My girlfriend and I have just returned from the Grand Siernis after 2 weeks. Fantastic hotel, great facilities. The staff were great, particularly JC our concierge (block 15) and Esparanda the waitress who worked on beach 2. They were so helpful and couldn't do enough for you. Will definitely be returning back.

Room Tip: If you want peace and quiet block 15 "ixchel" is ideals especially floor 3. The view is re...

We booked a family trip first time to Grand Sirenis, it was probably the best trip we ever had as a family that travels often. The people there were so helpful. We made tons of friends! There was so much to do for the whole family! The workers there are really hard workers and you can tell that they really enjoy what they do. There was always laughs and jokes. Our family couldnt have asked for a better stay anywhere else. We are definitely coming back to the same place again. We were sad leaving, but they made our stay unforgettable. If your looking for a stay GO TO GRAND SIRENIS!!!!!!!!

Room Tip: I would book the activities and restaurants as early as possible because you will find yourself havi...

We have just returned from a 2 week stay here as a couple, A huge complex so not a place to find friends or your partner if they go for a stroll, you may need a walkie talkie!! There are buggy transporters but we did the walking in a bid to walk off the food and wine.
The staff are professional and helpful as well as very hardworking. Food good, plenty of choice in the main buffets, you get to use the theme restaurants 3 times a week, the French was our fave as well as the Japanese. The house wine is passable if drunk very cold! we had a bottle chosen from the wine menu paying around £15 to £20, don't bother as its much the same. The cocktails are great. The beach bar seems to be the place to hang out especially as there is a pool near by. It closes at 6 which is a shame the other pools are rowdy with drinking competitions being the daily routine. bad language starts in late afternoon. we steered clear of them which is a shame as they had the swim up bars and water beds!
No problems getting sun beds, but we went low season, so not sure about now!

The rooms are clean albeit a little dated, you wont get a sea view unless you are lucky or pay! Noisy at night with slamming doors, but then its a huge place.
The views are amazing if you get a view on level 3. Buy rubber beach shoes as the coral and rocks will cut your feet, cheap at sports direct, the hotel shop stocks most things reasonably priced! you will need snorkels!
Entertainment was ok if you like shows karaoke etc, we watched cats and Alice in wonderland, the cast are very hard working and put their own ad lib to the performance which makes it fun.
We had a lovely time but would not take a young family here due to the size and worry of them wondering off. All in all we managed to relax after we found the quiet pool.
A visit to the amazing Spa on resort is a must, the massages are fantastic. as is the ExL Dolphin trip, what an amazing place this was, its an all inclusive day out, book through the hotel.
Enjoy!

Room Tip: level 3 near restaurants and beach, sea view or garden view, if you have mobility problems tell the...
