“Best Value on the Riviera Maya”
Reviewed May 3, 2009

Rooms: Very nice, especially the Mayan Suites with their outdoor private showers. Some room's decks with spas lack privacy so be sure to ask for a private location if you are looking for romantic times.
Location: Spectacular bay on the Riviera Maya with good swimming, sailing, snorkeling. Set in the jungle so although the resort is huge it seems very quaint. On Friday night May 1, 2009 I was walking down one of the main pathways between the rooms and saw only vegetation and heard only the ocean. It was peaceful and beautiful.
Value: The Best! Multiple fine dining restaurants, room service, free mini bars, upgraded rooms and sections are less expensive than other resorts, multiple free activities, including hobie cats, kayaks, tennis, etc. Lots of great pools. A private beach at least a half mile long with a great snorkeling area. Look at the online reviews, this resort rates up there with many of the most expensive resorts when it comes to customer reviews. If you want high end then there are better resorts but you will pay a lot more.
Cleanliness: Spotless grounds and rooms. Very beautiful.
Service: Very good and always working to be better. If anything goes wrong let them know and they will fix it quickly. Our golf cart pick up to take us to an al a carte restaurant was a little late and we were going to miss our reservation so they call and rescheduled and got us right in and we had a fruit basket waiting in our room to apologize. The resort monitors independent websites devoted to the resort and takes suggestions and actually implements them. We have gone two years in a row and highly recommend this resort to everyone. If you are a first class snob then this may not be your place, for everyone else this place exceeds expectations.

I was a part of the group that had the trip during the conquest shut down . The hotel seemed good until conquest , the company that booked us there ,shut down in the middle of our trip . We instantly became second rate and instead of fighting with conquest for their money they took us into treir lobby and pay again or else and they were holding us from getting out . The manager said we could leave when we were paid
and they were going to get the money from us somehow . If you do go there you better hope nothing goes wrong because they are not going to be there to help you . well they will but it's for a price . The whole experience sure put a bad taste to our trip .

I will comment on the beginning of our vacation, but first......

My husband and I just returned last night from the GP Riviera. We went there with Conquest Vacations and were caught in the middle of the nightmare. The way we were treated by the management of the hotel was appalling! There were quite a few other Canadians at the resort in the same situation. A note was left in our door on the Wednesday night saying only that the front desk would like to see us - that's it. We learned afterwards that others recieved more info than us, but that's all we got at that time. Since it was late at night when we got back to our room and saw the note, we went the next morning to the front desk. We were told that Conquest had gone bankrupt, that the hotel had not been paid yet from Conquest and we needed to pay the hotel directly for our vacation - even though we paid in full before we left Canada. There was a group of Conquest vacationers gathering in the lobby - growing more irate by the minute as the manager told everyone they would not be allowed to leave the hotel until their stay had been paid in full. One woman was in tears with a sick child and no extra money to pay again - she told the manager that she had another flight home in a few hours and she had no money to pay. She was told that under no circumstances would she be allowed to leave without paying, and she better phone Canada and get someone to send her money or she would be arrested. Luckily, another traveller was videotaping all of this, so she can do something about it back here at home. All of us felt we were basically being held for ransom - we had to pay before 1200 or we would be locked out of our rooms, and if we still refused to pay, we would be arrested. The front gate was being guarded by security and the Mexican Police were called by the hotel. At that point, one of the travellers called the Canadian Embassy and they immediately became involved. Because time was of the essense, they advised us to pay the money and there will be hotlines set up for Canadian Travellers when we arrived back home. We all were told what we were to pay (based on what the resort felt we should), which was more than we paid for the whole package, air included. When I informed them of this, they didn't care - that was what they determined we should pay - or be arrested. We were told that many time over the course of the day. We were also told that we would have to make our own arrangements to get to the airport, but the resort was not sure if we had flights back home. It wasn't until after I paid the resort the money they wanted, that I found out our flight were still being honored by CanJet - they really stepped up to the plate and honored all the return flights for Canadians. We have nothing good to say about this resort, we will never return there, and we will encourage everyone else not to stay there. Their only concern is for their bottom line - no matter what they have to do. They will eventually be paid by Conquest (who is NOT bankrupt - in direct conflict to what we were told by the hotel), but the strong-armed us into paying by using threats. We understand they have a business to run, but the way they did this was completely unprofessional and they showed no interest in customer service or what the long term results of their actions would be.

As for the beginning of our vacation, we can un-biasedly say we would not return to this resort regardless of what happened later.

Food/Drinks:
The food on the Riviera side was not up to the par of the rest of the resort - we had to go over to the Colonial side to eat everyday. The a-la-carte restaurants were very bland and the choices very limited. The service in the bar areas was sporadic at best - the bartenders were not friendly and the wait times for drinks was usually quite long.

Room:
Our room was cleaned everyday.....but that's the best thing I can think to say. They have a system set up to save energy. If the detectors don't detect any movement for a period of time, all the power shuts off. That's fine during the day when you are out, but during the night the airconditioning and clock radio would shut off after about an hour if you didn't move in your bed. We would wake up in the middle of the night sweating and have to move around the room to get it started again. There was tiny ants that would swarm around the room and up on the furniture and they couldn't seem to get rid of them no matter how much we complained about it.

All in all, it was not a great vacation, or even a good one. We will never return to the Grand Palladium again.

Our Family stayed at the Riviera section of Grand Palladium from 8th to 13 Apr. We loved the Hotel (pools, Buffets) Staff and Beach. The kids espcially liked the availablity of unlimited food and drinks. There was also plenty of entertainment polside. My daughter had lost her bag (with ipod and nintendo DS) and the staff found it and returned it to us in a few hours! It should be noted that there is alot of walking involved in going from rooms to food areas. But maybe that is a blessing as inevitably with all the free food we were all overeating. Our kids loved the Trains and Golf cart buses that ran between Hotel Lobbies and rooms. We always used these at night. The shows were very nice..(at Riviera and Colonial) We tried two Restaurants, The Asian and Mexican. Asian was very good while the Mexican is not recommended. We only tried Mexican as there was a long wait for El dorado. I believe the people staying at Royal Suites get preference and are able to get reservation. The way the Hotel is constructed it is not very good for people with disablites and older people..though I guess the could use the other parts of the Hotel. Our room also had some noisy neighbours.
All in all very memorable stay and much thanks to staff for great service...and keeping the Hotel and rooms clean.

The hotel was 5 star quality but I wasn't really impressed with the food or drink service. Lots of walking (especially if you were at dinner or on the beach and you forgot something). Wish the beach and pool was closer to the rooms. No view from the rooms unless you were on the third floor.

My husband and I, along with our best man and maid of honor, all decided to make a vacation out of our honeymoon!! None of us had ever ventured to the Mayan Riviera, so months of searching for a resort soon ensued--and we settled on the Grand Palladium Riviera.......and what a choice it was!!!
The ride from the airport is about 1.5 hours, but we didn't even notice the drive as there was lots to look at, and our guide on the bus was extremely entertaining and informative--it felt like 10 minutes at most! The resort itself was amazing--they've done a wonderful job of maintaining what they could of the surrounding jungle and wildlife. There are four resorts on the Grand Palladium which you have full access to under the all-inclusive...the a la carte restaurants are ALL fabulous! We had a chance to sample all but the Japanese, as you don't have to book ahead. There were a couple of nites we had about an hour wait for a table, but you are more than welcome to hang out in the front lobby of the restaurants and enjoy a drink and people watch.......If you head for supper before 7pm, you normally have no wait at all.
The Riviera section has the best pool area by far, and there is a canal which runs between it and the White Sands section--you can tour this free of charge on the canal boat which picks you up every 10 minutes or so at the appointed drop off spots (one right off the Riviera lobby)...great way to see the crocodiles, and the other parts of the resort.
The buffet has a theme every nite, and an amazing breakfast--the Riviera is the only one of the four resorts that has the early morning breakfast--the others all have Continental. If you like to get an early start to your day (as we did), I strongly suggest staying at this part of the Grand Palladium.
We found the White Sands section to be very nice as well, and they share alot of the same areas as the Riviera. Kantenah and Colonial are further down--only about a 20 min walk, quicker if you take the train that runs from one to the next. Kantenah has the best beach for swimming, but you can access it from the Riviera beach--it only takes 5 min to walk along the beach itself. (BEAUTIFUL!!) Also it seemed that Colonial and Kantenah were more geared to families with younger children. There were basically NO small kids at Riviera.
The staff were amazing, and always willing to help. Our room was a junior suite, which was the cheapest of the rooms on this resort, and it was incredible!! Roomy, clean, and everything you would expect of a suite, for a fraction of the price. Don't bother upgrading to a more expensive room--you won't need to.
All in all, we were sad to go......are planning another trip for the upcoming spring, and are finding it very difficult to NOT go back to the same resort!!! We will definitely return--hopefully for two weeks this time--7 days was just not long enough.

My girlfriend and I stayed in the Royal Suites-adult only section of the Riviera for a 5 day getaway. I will keep it short and just say that the cleanliness of all the restaurants, grounds, pool etc was truly unbelievable, especially considering the size of the resort grounds and the number of people it accomodates. And I can not say enough about the Staff--they MADE this trip!! They were always friendly, helpful and one step ahead of anticipating your needs! The food was consistently excellent, whether in the buffet or in the a la carte restaurants (all of 5 star quality, by the way). It is a huge place so they have trolleys and golf carts to transport people to different areas. We will definitely return!
