“Awesome Trip and Gorgeous Hotel”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 9, 2010

I still cannot stop talking about the hotel and how beautiful it was. We were there during the week of August 30th. Our family group consisted of 4 adults and 2 children under the age of 12. My son who is 2 had a wonderful time and enjoyed the pool very much. The grounds are immaculate and the rooms are spacious and comfortable. The resort is very clean and well kept.

Since we were there during the last week of August/Early September the resort was not at capacity and was nice and quiet. I also liked the location because it was away from Cancun and all the craziness. This was a place to relax and really enjoy your time away from home.

The resort had many restaurants from which to choose from. Unfortunately for us, we did not get to try any of the a la carte restaurants since half our group is rather picky. We therefore stuck to the buffets which were ok. The food is rather bland on some items and good on others. I guess it all depends on personal choice.

This is a hotel that I would definitely come back to since we did enjoy our stay and came back with wonderful memories.

My wife & I, plus 15yr old son and his girlfriend spent a week at the Grand Palladium in mid August. In summary, a really good relaxing holiday, shame we could only go for a week!

Hotel complex is huge and is just cut out of the jungle/mangroves in the middle of nowhere. Resort has four hotels in two pairs, plus the VIP section. All facilities are shared and it doesn't matter which one you stay at. Rooms are in blocks throughout the grounds. We were in block 59, midway between the two pairs of hotel lobbies and near to the beach.

First impressions were good, with quite efficient check-in. Beware, after check in you are told all about the facilities and layout and then start to think you are visiting a time share as you are signed up for a breakfast boat trip or lobster dinner in return for listening to their sales pitch. Don't worry if they won't take no for a answer, you can soon phone from the room and cancel.

Service is generally very good in all the bars and restaurants, of which there are many. You may want to have a supply of small denomination Peso or US $ for tipping.

Food is generally OK. We found the buffet in the Colonial/Kantenah complex better than the White Sand/Riviera for breakfast. Food did tend to be rather bland - if you like chlllies in your food you will be disappointed, even in the Mexican restaurant.

Rooms are a good size. The one we had had two queen beds and a double sofa bed. The mini-bar is restocked every day with water, soft drinks and a few beers. You can pay to get it restocked a second time, but with so many bars and generally spending so little time in the room I don't see the point.

We were told to expect to be plagued by mosquitoes & other biting insects, but in the end got no more than one or two bites each and some of those were on a trip out and were probably got after we had washed the insect repellent off in the sea.

Pools, beach & facilities are very good. There are quite a few rocks in the sea and a a band of shingle along part of the beach just in the water. Either take some beach shoes, endue the rough bits, or make sure you are roughly in fornt of the Colonial where the sea bottom seemed to be better. Water sports did seem to get quite busy, as did the beach at times. We tended to use the White Sands pool as it seemed quieter than the other one.

Weather was very hot, but generally dry while we were there. We had a couple of very light showers, one tropical downpour that lasted 15 minutes and some overnight storms.

Don't expect much to do in the evening apart from eat and drink! There are shows in both the lobby complexes, but let's just say we were not impressed.

Travel to the nearest town, Playa del Carmen, is easy. There are cheap local buses every few minutes on the main road just outside the hotel. There are small mini-buses. If you don't fancy the bus it is easy enough to get a taxi, but probably not to go any further than Play del Carmen as it would be hard to justify the expense compared to the bus.

Would we go again? Probably. Is it really a 5-star? Probably not by European standards.

4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 24, 2010

I reviewed this property after a stay in 2008, and although we had a good trip there this year there were parts of this trip that did not go as well as our previous visit.

Check-In: I had e-mailed the resort 7 days before arrival to request Bldg 58 or 59, upper floors, 2 rooms close together. Instead we got Bldg. 56, with one room on the 3rd floor and one room on the 1st floor. I understand that not everyone can have Bldg. 58 or 59, but if they consider all room requests a week in advance I don’t understand why our rooms could not have been closer together. The building location ended up being fine, since it is very close to the pool and not far from the beach, but the room was not as enjoyable as the ocean view room I had in 2008. We received a fruit basket as a thank you for being a return guest, but I would much rather have had the rooms I requested since a fruit basket at an all-inclusive resort is kind of unnecessary.

Palladium Travel Club: After a really lengthy check-in process where you fill out an information card that even has your passport number on it, the Palladium Travel Club representative was waiting to meet with us before we were taken to our rooms. The first thing he wanted us to know is that if we were part of the travel club we could make sure we got the building we wanted and the room we wanted the next time we came. That didn’t hit me exactly right, and I think they need to rethink the approach of telling people who have been travelling all day and are tired and cranky that they could have gotten a much better room if only they had booked with the Travel Club.

Rooms: Both rooms were fine, with beautiful towel arrangements and flower petals on the bed. Everything was clean and maid service was good, with towel art on most days. Most people complain about the hard beds, but I thought the beds were comfortable. The pillows are not the best, but they do have a pillow menu where you can pay $3 per day to get the style of pillow you prefer.

Beach: The beach at this resort is beautiful, with the softest sand being in front of the Colonial/Kantenah section. Palapas are plentiful, with hammocks scattered throughout the trees, so it is not difficult to find a chair in the shade. You do need to get out early if you need a group of chairs together, but for a couple it should be no problem. The water was rough the first part of the week, but we still managed to snorkel most mornings and saw a turtle, spotted eagle rays, and many fish. We also took a day trip by taxi to Akumal to snorkel with the turtles and to Yalku Lagoon for some calmer water.

Pools: The pools are huge and beautiful at this resort, with the Colonial pool being a little more active than the White Sand pool. It is much harder to find a chair in the shade at the Colonial pool. We took our floats and had plenty of room with no danger of running into people. The activities team tries to get people involved with bingo, trivia games, etc., but there were not many participants while we were there.

Food: One of my favorite things at the Palladium is their “no reservation” dinner policy. You can eat at an a la carte restaurant every night if you want, and since we usually ate around 6:30 we never had to wait for a table. If the restaurant does not have seating available, they just give you a pager. Our favorite restaurant was the Japanese, and we ate at both the show table and a regular table. We also went to the Italian restaurant twice, and the best dish there is the shrimp. Strangely enough our least favorite was the steakhouse, because all our steaks were cooked well done when we had ordered medium. This was one of my favorite restaurants in 2008, so that was a little bit of a disappointment. The hard ice cream that is kept in cases behind the pool bars was a special treat after lunch each day, and they had a good variety of flavors.

Grounds: This resort is literally carved into a jungle, which means you will see lots of interesting plants and wildlife during your stay. One of my favorite things in the early morning was setting out through the trees on the wooden walkways never knowing what kind of bird or animal I would see that day. Unfortunately it also means mosquitoes, so unless you use bug spray you will have to deal with some bites. We encountered the most mosquitoes at the putt-putt golf area, so needless to say we only played once. As others have noted, the resort requires a great deal of walking and bridge climbing to get to pools and restaurants, so it would probably not be a good choice for those who have difficulty getting around.

Internet: In 2008, there were two staffed business centers with computers which provided internet access at a cost of $3 for 15 minutes. Now the only computers are along the walls in the Sports Bar which is loud, dark, and hot. They are hooked up to a machine like an ATM which charged $10 for 30 minutes of access, and there is no one available to help if there is a problem. For me, this was a definite step backward. There is wireless internet service available in the lobbies, but for those of us who do not travel with a laptop the computer availability was poor.

Lobbies and Bars: There is some form of live music in the lobbies each night, and a piano player at Hemingway’s in the Colonial lobby. This is a non-smoking air-conditioned bar with card tables, couches, and a library area. We enjoyed playing cards there each night.

Customer Service: At the beginning of our stay, my daughter placed a new shirt and pair of shorts on the bottom shelf of the stacked unit in the closet that is provided for your clothes. Somehow they ended up ruined with large bleach spots all over them. I don’t know if they clean those shelves with a bleach solution between guests and they weren’t dry yet, or if the maid was pouring a cleaning solution that splashed up on the shelf or what, but the clothes were ruined. It had to have been just a freak accident, but the response at client services was less than sympathetic. It took several trips to client services and nearly 2 ½ days to reach a satisfactory solution. Special thanks goes to customer service representative Abigail, who had a very pleasant, caring attitude and was a big help in getting this problem resolved.

Summary: This is a beautiful resort with many things to offer its guests. Although there are a few things I wish they would do differently, I would not hesitate to recommend it to a friend.

5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 20, 2010

I read reviews and forums for four months before our visit to this resort so we were prepared for anything...bugs, GI upset, strong sun, lots of walking. There were no unpleasant surprises, only delightful ones!

The reviews of June and July indicated crowds and long lines. I was pleasantly suprised that this was not true for us in August. We went to a different ala carte around 7 PM nightly and never had to wait. We found the adult pool at the White Sand to be calming and comfortable...sharing a bartender and a nice space with about 12 others daily.

We traveled with our two adult children, age 21 and 27. We appreciated that our suite and junior suite were ajoining. We simply opened the shared inside door and had a very large living area. I am not sure this room arrangement would be possible had be requested a specific location or visited during a very busy time period.

The breakfast and lunch buffets were very good. I am very selective, desiring lean protein and vegetables. The selection was extensive...there was smoked salmon for breakfast, a carving station at lunch, very fresh fruit and vegetables everywhere. The ala cartes were good. Try the different soups nightly, be willing to taste something new.

The staff were very friendly with a strong work ethic. Smile and try to speak a few words of Spanish. They have the challange of communicating with different people from different cultures daily. Tip them for their efforts, they deserve it. (I took $100 in $1 and $2 denominations). I experienced a very rushed bartender at the pool buffet at lunchtime, making drinks and scooping ice cream at the same time. One may have seen him as unfriendly, he was just BUSY! I smiled and he winked.

I am accustomed to Atlantic Ocean beaches with big waves and sandy ocean bottoms. The upside of the Caribbean rocky beach and small waves was the ability to snorkel and kayak, I had never had this oppotunity before. Try the salt water pool, you can kneel and see lots of fish.

The grounds are lovely. Walk around. You will find something new daily. Do not miss the chapel. Enjoy the wildlife. We never did find the monkey that I am told lives near the Colonial. We were content to spend a week at the resort, eat, drink and enjoy the activites offered by the staff. Check the activities calendar daily.

We enjoyed our stay very much. Excellent à la carte restaurants. Nice beach (however not so nice than in Punta Cana). Try to get a room near the beach.

In case we'll return to Mexico, we'll return to this hotel.

I have nothing but good things to say about this resort. The people were very helpfull and accommodating. They called us taxis, gave us directions, scheduled exursions ect. Being that it was an all inclusive trip i thought i would tire of the food and be anxious to leave the resort a few nights. Other than the one night we spend in Cozumel we never had the desire to eat else where. There are many varieties in the food availabe so there's never a need to leave if you dont want to. The pools were alwasy clean. Beautiful beaches. All in all a wonderfull place to stay.
