Grand Bahia Principe Coba
Ranked #11 of 23 Hotels in Akumal
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed March 29, 2007

My girlfriend and I stayed at the Coba from March 22-29, 2007. We are both in our late twenties, from Canada and have traveled a fair amount.

Flight: Skyservice, if you have traveled with them before you know all about the lack of legroom, bad food and old planes so i won't go on about them.

Cancun Airport: We got our luggage within minutes of landing and made our way quickly through immigration, customes etc. Once you exit, beware of the sharks trying to grab your luggage and sell you a time share, just ignore them, find your tour operator and head to your bus.

Resort: This Resort is about 60-90 minutes south of Cancun, depending on how crazy your bus driver is and how many stops they have to make at other hotels. Our bus stopped at several, it was good to see them because it gives you something to compare your resort too, let me say that none of them compared to the Coba.

Our check in took 2 minutes and our luggage arrived at our room shorlty thereafter. The room was gorgeous, king size bed, separate sitting area and best of all the jacuzzi tub!!

Food: The buffet was exvcellent, always something good to eat even for the fussiest eater. We checked out four of the a la cartes, Mediteraneo, Dolce Vita, Le Gourmet and Mikado. Mediteraneo was bad, Dolce Vita was worse. The other two were excellent, with Mikado taking the prize. The food was awesome, the show they put on for you even better. You would easily pay $100 for a meal prepared this way in Canada.

Drinks: Never watered down, the bartenders would make anything we liked and dump as much rum or vodka as we liked. Be sure to ask for the premium brand hard stuff as they normally use a lesser brand. I think we both drank enough to cover the cost of the vacation!

Entertainment: Fantastic, there was always something going on at night. As others have mentioned, the Michael jackson show was awesome to watch. Be sure to arrive early to get a good seat.

Beach: The only real drawback was the beach. It was quite rocky as this hotel is located near a reef. That being said, we did always manage to find a great place to sit, and a good part in the water to swim.

Overall this hotel was fantastic. The grounds were very well kept, the staff were always polite and eager to help you. We did not have to wait more than a few minutes for anything we wanted, and the hotel was near capacity. Being able to use the services at the Tulum and Akumal resorts is also great as you can spend your week at a different pool and bar every day. I would defenitely reccomend this hotel to anyone as it was far superior to any of the other we encountered. We plan to go back sometime in the future.

We stayed at the Coba from 13-20 March with two other couples and had a great time. We booked our vacation through apple vacations and everything went smooth. The flight from Chicago was great with an in flight meal and movie. Once we landed in Cancun we got right through immigrations, got our baggage and breezed through customs in all of about 30 minutes. Once outside the terminal we met our apple vacations rep. who directed us toward our bus. We grabbed some Corona's from a curbside stand and boarded the bus ready to start our vacation.

The bus trip to the resort from the airport turned out to be our only dislike of the entire vacation. It wasn't that bad, however, we spent just over two hours on the bus because we had to stop at about 5 other resorts to drop off people and luggage which made it kind of long. I would definately reccomend trying to get a shuttle van or something to take you straight to the resort if your bus is going to be making stops along the way. Of course on our return to the airport
we were the first pick up leaving the coba lobby at 5:15 am and stopping at the same 5 resorts along the way back to the airport to pick up more people.

The resort itself was immaculate, the people were all friendly most speaking broken English so we got good at Spanish for drink orders. We stayed at villa 24A and spent most of our time at the quiet pool with swim up bar and we kept the bartender German quite busy. Ask for the German special. The swim up bar at Akumal also was quite nice
and Fransisco would have your cervesa poured and ready before you even got to the bar, now that's what I call service!

The food was great, we tried most of the buffets and all were nice and had about the same food. We booked three al la cartes but really just enjoyed the buffets so that we didn't have to be on a time schedule.

The beach was nice some coral but never had a problem with bare feet,
you just have to be careful in some places. The swimming area had plenty of fish that would swim right up to you which was pretty cool. There was also a real cool swing bar at the Akumal beach that you could also find us at. This is where we met some crazy Canadian women who taught us how to play "bum darts".

We never left the resort to go on a day trip however we did go scuba diving on the reef and it was awesome! It was a 45 minute dive at 40ft in crystal clear water with lots of cool fish to look at. If you are interested in scuba diving, you can try it in any of the pools to see if you like it or not. Each pool had an instructor and gear out to show you how in the mornings.

I would definately reccomend this resort to anyone, and we will most definately be returning in the future.

We spent the week of March 13 to 20 at the Coba. Great rooms, great service, an incredible vacation. We booked with Apple Vacations and stayed in the Premier Villas, #24B overlooking the pool. I had emailed and asked for a third floor room and they accomodated us without question. The Apple bus trip to the resort was the very only thing we could complain about. Very long - probably was 3 hours with the wait at the airport included. Found out that for only $20 more each, we could have booked a non stop trip thru Apple from the airport to the hotel and back again. Wish our travel agent had told us. When we got to the hotel we were greeted with Mimosas, checked in within minutes, and were in our room immediately even though it was not check time. This was the service we came to love. Room was absolutedly beautiful & huge and the maid always left a towel decoration or decorated the room with fancy sheets, creative curtains, and/or balloons. We never had a problem with hot water (as I've read at some resorts) and that was with me filling the jacuzzi tub. Refrigerator was kept stocked and they often left a treat such as candy or chips along with 3 large bottles of water. We seldom took the rides, preferred to walk everywhere and nothing was far. If I counted correctly, there are 15 Buffets/Restaurants, 22 Bars (this doesn't include those at the Hacienda Dona Isabella), 4 Snack Bars, and 14 pools. Explore and try as many as you like, that was half the fun. The beach stretches in front of the 3 resorts and is very large, some parts are rocky and some are not. -- All are beautiful. We enjoyed many long walks along the beachfront. In the early morning, you will have it to yourself to enjoy. We never had a problem on the beach getting a shaded chair. It would not have been a problem at the pools either but people play the "towel game" It is a shame that they find it necessary since the chairs wouldn't be a problem at the pools if only those using the pool area saved a chair. Make sure to book one ala carte at the Mikado. The food was great and the chef puts on a fabulous show. It was our favorite. (Apple Vacations guest get 4 Ala-Carte reservations with a week stay.) We also enjoyed Le Gourmet and the El Pescador. We took the advice of other travelers and took the Collectivos to Tulum and into Playa del Carmen. Worked out great. We also brought lots of singles and fives to tip the staff. The service was great and they deserve it. Loved the resort, could not have asked for more. We were looking to be spoiled and definitely felt we were. We would go back in a heartbeat. Just watch out for the Tequila shots at the swim up bar...... Hope your vacation is just as fantastic!

We stayed at the Coba for 2 weeks from 9th March to 23rd.
As everyone has said its a great place for a holiday altho' its gigantic.Briefly a few points-
PROS :-
Service - best we have ever experienced
Cleanliness/Hygiene - First Class
Food - varied and generally very good
Drinks-keep them coming!
Site transport - very useful and frequent.
Grounds - extremely well kept.

CONS :-
Small beach for all three hotels with limited space for swimming/snorkeling.
Travelling distance from Cancun airport (we checked in finally more than 3.5 hours after landing due to delays in Immigration and transport arrangements.)

For travellers from UK - be aware that it makes for a very long day - we were travelling for more than 18 hours from door to door and we had stayed overnight at Gatwick!!

We stayed at the Coba from March 04/07 -11/07 and were overwhelmed with the facility! This place is 5 star all the way and impeccable attention to detail is paid.

Rooms- Beautiful. King size bed is firm and bathroom is about the size of other hotel rooms I've stayed in. A/C is central so you don't
have to worry about the wall unit breaking down. Fridge is restocked daily with water, beer, snacks. Maid service is excellent (we tipped $2 a day as the maids work their butts off and make $4.80 per day)

Pools-The Coba pools are beautiful and well-kept. Bring a thermal mug
for your drinks as they'll keep longer. The pools at Tulum and Akumal
are great too!

Restaurants-If you complain about the food at the buffets at the Gran Bahia then you won't be satisfied anywhere. The first night we were there we were overwhelmed by the variety and service we received
from the Coba buffet. The menu may repeat itself everyday but there is enough to have where you won't be stuck in the same routine choosing. The a la cartes are all excellent.

I stayed at the BP Coba from Mar 10-17. We booked through Apple Vacations. Our flight was great and we were excited to get to the beach early excpet the apple tour bus had other ideas. It took us three hours from the time we got on the coach bus, waited for everyone else to get on and made about 8 stops along the way. No beer to drink and the ride was very, very long. A tip if you go, ask your travel agent how you will get to the resort. On the way back we hired a van that took eight of us with all of our luggage for 160US and it only took an hour and ten minutes, well worth the money. Once we got to the resort things improved drastically. Mamossa's were waiting for us and we checked in at the Coba Premier/Club Golden lobby. Check in took five minutes and we had requested to be on the third floor of a villa with the three other couples we went with and they were able to put three couples on the third floor and one on the second of the same villa.
The rooms were very big and very nice. We over looked the premier pool and were in villa 26. A weird thing about the rooms is they have very poor lighting in the bathrooms and no fans. They were cleaned every day and the fridge was stocked every other. They were cleaned good but not great. There was some dirt on the floor that sat there for three days before it was cleaned. The safes came free with booking through apple vacations. There were also coffee makers in our room and the coffee was just as good as making it at a hotel in the US or Canada. Overall we were very happy with the rooms. The Air Transat lobby was right next to our villa and i would go in there to use the internet in the mornings when no one else was there and didn't have any problems. The enitre complex is huge but very well kept and the bartenders and wait staff were great. Just a FYI, the staff makes very little money and even a $1 tip means a lot to them. They work hard and we didn't find they worked any different if tipped but you knew it was very much appreciated.
The beach was the only slight downfall to the resort. The sand is very corally and is rough to walk in bare foot but you are able to do it. Just don't expect a pure white sand beach. I did go to the Tulum ruins and the beach there was beautiful, you can bring your bathing suits and go swimming there, just no swim up bars.
The food at the a la cartes was really good. We ate at the Mikado, the Arlequin, Fruto del mar and LE Gourmet. They all had great food but one thing we noticed is that the diners took a long time, one we were in there for over two hours. The buffets had good food but it got very repetitive by the end of the week. They said they had theme nights but we didn't notice much difference from one night to the next. they always had make your own pasta, an oriental section (rice, vegetables, sushi), a mexican section and a kids section.
We really enjoyed our time there and would recomend it for anyone looking for a place to go. We would not hesitate to stay at another Bahia PRincipe resort in the future.

We were a group of 10 adults that stayed at the Bahia Coba from Mar 12 - 18. I must say, though the resort is huge and a bit overwhelming at first, we settled in nicely. This was one of the best vacations yet. Normally, we stay at IBEROSTARs, and we all agree, this resort is right up there with the IBEROSTARs. .

We read reviews before leaving which others indicated that the service staff was rude, THIS IS NOT TRUE. The service staff bend over backwards to assist and though the language barrier does exist, they are so eager to learn english.

A few things to watch out for. At the Coba, there are two pools, one that's quiet and the other was loud. At the quiet pool, the chairs are all reserved by 7:00 am, so get out there early. If you plan on tipping the housekeepers, you are better off to give the tip directly to the maid instead of just leaving in the room. We found that on two separate occassions the money was taken long before the rooms were clean. Turns out that the person responsible for loading the mini bars was helping themselves to the maid tips.

The resort has a wonderful trolley system that moves guest between complexes and the shopping plaza. We never had to wait more than 5 minutes for a ride.

Overall, food was great, weather was beautiful, and we can't wait to go back.

We headed to Playa DelCarmen one night. Normally, this is a 45 mintues, $30 cab fare one way, however, our conseige "Christine" was able to set us up was a van service for $130 Round Trip and the driver "Alfredo" was great, he waiting for us to finish our visiting before driving back to the hotel.

Bottom Line: Would we go back?. Absolutely!!!!
When does the next flight leave?????
