Just returned from 2 weeks in Mexico stopping at the Bahia Principe Coba. We've been there about 6 times but this was our first visit after a gap of 8 years. Things have changed since our last visit and the Akumal site is now separate from Tulum & Coba, but as we are repeat visitors with a gold band we were able to use all parts of the site. The food is still excellent and we would particularly recommend both the Mikado and the Le Gourmet. One possible negative comment would be that some of the buildings are looking a little tired and to be fair, there is some work already ongoing to update some areas. Overall though a great location and value for money.

Room tip: Try to book in block 22 as its a great location. Its overlooking the pool, right amongst 3 or 4 restaurants.

We fly home tomorrow and have thoroughly enjoyed our stay.
First of all the 5 star rating, the ritz in London also has a 5 star rating so does it compare to that? Of course it doesn’t but 1 night room only at the Ritz would set you back more than 2 weeks here. Does it compare to other 5 star resorts in Mexico, Cuba etc then yes it does.
The staff have been amazing to attentive, how anyone can complain about the service here is beyond me it’s been as good if not better than any where I’ve stayed, the staff are a credit to the hotel.
The food has been excellent, yes the main buffet can become a bit samey after 2 weeks but I find that in all AI hotels, there was always plenty of choice.

The visited 5 of the many a la Carte restaurants you can over the 4 resorts
Cosmel mexican unfortunately this was very disappointing as the food was very bland and the restaurant extremely hot and the windows were open meaning lots of mosquitoes attacking us would not recommend it and only disappointing thing of the entire holiday
Le Gormet French restaurant this was our favourite and we went here twice and I highly recommend it, the fillet Migion was to die for
Grand Totoga Brazilian restaurant again we visited here twice as it was excellent the food just keeps coming until you turn the card to red
Mikado Japanese restaurant again very good and lots of theatre and food was so tasty
Italian restaurant food was very good and would have gone again if we had been allowed but we only had 7 visits in our 2 weeks to specialty restaurants

We are beach people so spent the 2 weeks on beach so can’t really comment on the pools other than they looked fabulous with 2 swim up bars

The beach as with the whole coastline has a big problem with seaweed but I couldn’t believe the lengths this hotel has gone to, to keep the beach usable, first they have large floating yellow barriers to halt the seaweed then they have men with large nets dragging the seaweed out of the water and a team of men raking the seaweed into piles on the beach and then they shovel it into trailers, the one day we were on the beach 8 hours and these men worked on removing the seaweed all that time and I counted 7 trailer loads removed...what an effort and as I said we spent every day on the beach and in the sea and it was beautiful thanks to their hard work

The rooms are fine and the decor is how you expect a hotel room to be like in the Caribbean area and was kept spotless by the maid
The grounds are kept amazing and we got see lots of the wild animals around and they never bother you ..we loved seeing them

The drinks flowed easily with lots of top brands in use and the bar staff and waiting staff were excellent, you never had to wait long and in certain areas if went there often enough they would replace your drink just as you got to the last dregs without even having to ask

Would I recommend this hotel to my friends and family...well I already have

Would I return...wholeheartedly
We have had such a fab time
Cheers Dale & Nicky

It's with real sadness I'm contributing my first ever negative review of anywhere but I do not want anyone else to experience what my husband and I have just been through with the food at this hotel.
It is our personal choice to be vegetarians, we travelled with friends who are meat eaters whose opinion may differ on food available but when you are simply not catered for and in some cases misled on what you are eating, it really does ruin your holiday.
The buffet at the hotel is vast and chaotic. There is some repetition but there is lots of choice. They have a gluten free area and the kids buffet is lovely - they go to a lot of trouble to make it appealing to the little ones.
The signage for food is extremely basic, just a name, no detail, for example 'rice' but it could have literally anything in there, eg meat.
Vegetarian dishes are in between non vegetarian dishes so tongs and spoons get mixed and so theres cross contamination.
I grabbed a 'vegetarian baguette' from the kids section on my 2nd evening on holiday and after chewing and swallowing a mouthful of it and thinking it tasted odd, hidden in the cheese was Ham. When I discreetly raised this with the head Chef and the Buffet Manager Paula, they were incredibly apologetic and said they had been mis-labelled. She said she would 'ensure it never happened again as she too, was a vegetarian'.
Often there were plates labelled Vegetarian Sandwiches only for meat ones to also be there TOUCHING them. I've attached a photo of this to this review.
You are catered for in the al-la-carte restaurant s and honestly, if it wasn't for the 3 nights we ate there I dont know what we would have done. Do make it clear as soon as you are at them if you are vegetarian/vegan as they have a completely different menu to give you.
We ate so little on this holiday and it really did affect us, we wised up to the issues day 2 so we started eating safe items like chips. When having a lengthy discussion with Jorge a deputy director of the complex, he asked us if the chips were cooked with the chicken nuggets would this be an issue?? YES JORGE, BIG ISSUE.
Jorge said he was keen to resolve our issues and said if there was anything he could do to compensate us to let him know. We didn't feel he took us seriously, referring to our basic food standards as 'Suggestions' so we went to discuss with TUI. Ben and Chloe are excellent reps, they welcomed our complaint stating this is something they have been trying to get changed for some time. Chloe called Jorge up to the office and suggested he gave us spa appointments by way of apology, he said he would need to 'look into this'. Fast Forward 20 minutes and unbelievably Jorge is trying to make money from our misery by offering a special discount- it was the same discount the women offer around the pool when they come touting for business.
Yes its Mexico but we have honestly never encountered this issue anywhere else, they could simply have one hot counter all veggie stuff, then we know where we stand and the tong issue is negated.
The hotel does have positives, theres amazing wildlife in residence and so much to see, drinks are excellent- branded spirits. Entertainers work hard round the pool and I did a great cookery class.
We really liked Coba beach, super cosy beach club feel.
The gym at Tulum is better and its great you can use both complexes, the Mexican night is nice but not worth $18, we got our tickets free by attending the privilege welcome meeting which is effectively a timeshare sales pitch.
The mosquitoes are relentless at this time of year and the hotel do not fumigate. They are the Marines of Mosquitoes so you need the strongest non-natural stuff and even then you'll likely to get eaten even if you're not prone to. This isnt the hotels fault but we felt they could do more.

On the whole, we wouldn't return to this hotel, which is a shame as we have stayed in Bahia Principes previously with no issues.

This place is awesome and huge. Definitely a place where you need the tram services. Staying at the Coba you can use the facilities next door or should I say next campus Grand Bahia Principe Tulum. The food is abundant, all drink services over flowing for thirsty vacationers.
The facilities are super clean, choose among the many swimming pools around the resort. Or go straight to the beach we’re the water is warmer than the pool. The staff keeps the beaches diligently clean picking up the seaweeds very morning. The staff are very polite and friendly.
If there is anything I must complain about, it is the mosquitos. But what do you expect? The location is immersed in a tropical forest. Aka “Jungle” you will see the local wild life “ iguanas, and a Mexican version of a raccoon lol
