“What is with the sun bed saving??”

If this were my first trip down South I would be elated, but it is far from it. By far the worst resort I have stayed at in the Mayan Rivierra. Yes I got bang for my buck, and it was a fine establishment but you can't call it a 5 star when you compare some of the other 5 stars in the area. The clientel was to say the least looking for a deal. Imagine people booking this resort to go topless. It is a family resort. If you want to go topless, pay the extra and go to an adults only resort.
Let me explain,I was travelling with my parents and 2 young children. My parents are in there 60-70. My dad's not the best walker right now. We couldn't go on the hunt for loungers on the beach. We found the back of a palapas and thought we would just sit in the shade there. We didn't touch the things in the front. The two folks who had marked that spot figured they owned the whole palapas area, and the beach that was below..... Imagine these two using fowl language to my mother, father and in front of my children....... I was appauled. She wanted to go toppless, and he wanted to spend alone time with her....... Get a life Mr. Edmonton, pay the extra and go to Hedonism or a Secrets even. if you want to be alone don't pick a resort with 1030 rooms.
The head of Human resourses came down and did.....NOTHING!!! Thank you to the two kind gentlemen from Quebec who help my parents out.
I would have to get a great deal to go back to this place just because of the clientel it attracts. The good deals bring the misfits out of the wood work.
Other then that, the service, food, rooms, grounds were all good. No pool servicxe at a 5 star?? That isn't really a 5 star.
My parents loved it. It was there first Mayan experience and they tought it was out of this world. Nothing to compare to.
I on the other hand liked it. Can't blame the resort for the classless acts of its patrons.

visited in feb for 14 nights
stayed at the gbp in the premier section. fabulous as ever! would defo recommend as lots to do, good food choice, entertainment etc.
excellent service, much quieter in the premier section but go to coba/akumal/tulum for entertainment.
bad points-too many awfully obnoxious americans, loud, trashy and extremely poor manners in public! although this issue certainly isnt the fault of the hotel!

also unable to go topless except for the beach, which I would imagine the americans have also banned as you should have seen the size of some of them! it really is a different world! and also americans laughing about breaking sunloungers due to their weight. How very dare they!

My wife, daughter and one of her friends just returned from the BHP Coba. Actually booked the 5 Apple square deal through Apple Vacations, so we didn't know exactly what resort we were going to unit we arrived at the Denver Airport. We were very happy when we found out. We had been there years ago when it only the Tulum and Akumal within the resort. Now they have added the Coba, but you can go to and use all 3. Great trip, good food, great service, nice clean comfortable rooms. Highly recommend!! Will be going back for sure.

It will take you 3 days to figure out where you are going. But once you do, you will enjoy.. There are 3 hotels on the same grounds. Bring an insulated mug for drinks. All beer (Dos Equis Lager) and drinks are served in small plastic cup s on the beaches. Be sure to eat at Mikado (Hibatchi style) and I heard that the Italian was good. You only get 2 nights al a carte with a 5 night stay. All the really good restaurants were already booked unless you wanted dinner at 9pm. If you complain, they will add another al a carte meal. Skip the seafood (Pescador?). We had to hit the buffet after that one. There are lots of pools and bars. The beach areas are huge with plenty of chairs. As with any resort, you need to wake up early to get chairs at the pools.

We have been to a dozen or so resorts in Mexico and this is one of the best. Great rooms and excellent service. A La Carte restaraunts were super and the main dining buffet was very good. I would highly recommend this resort.

The only disadvantage is that it is a 1 - 2 hour ride frpm the airport depending on how many stops the bus/van must make. Also the evening entertainment starts too late, 10:00pm.

I fell in love with the Gran Bahia chain in the Dominican. After three years, I'm still raving about the food and service. We expected the same in Mexico, but were disappointed. In the DR we ate lobster four nights. At Coba the feauture meat on the buffet was thin, fried round steak three nights running. The seafood ala carte received failing marks from my wife and I and the other two ala carts were good but not what we expected with a five star rating. With regard to service, I never had a drink [except ar dinner] that I didn't have to line up for. We didn't know until we arrived that Coba is not on the beach, but is close enough to the highway that we could heat the traffic in our room. We also weren't aware that it is part of a three hotel complex that holds 10,000 -12,000 people. All hotels were full and it was overcrowded. In spite of the cold weather, we couldn't find lounge chairs at the pool on two occasions and twice they were out of towels. We went to a show at Tullum and found all the seats full and hundreds of people standing. The hotel and our room were very clean and the grounds were beautifully maintained. If you go on a side trip, Chichenicha comes first by a long margin but we really enjoyed the jeep safari. In the DR, I felt like a valued guest, at Coba, I felt like a cash cow. They charged $35 dollars a week for use of the safe in your room, $5 for a local phone call and they wanted $32 a couple for their Mexican fiesta night in spite of the fact that we'd already paid for shows and open bar. This resort [at least in the week that we were there] is a low 3, not a five star experience.

We have been to the Gran Bahia Hotel chain in Mexico,Dominican Republic.
It was our second time in Coba Nov.4-11,2009. Coba is our favorite. We stayed in the Royal Golden Section. With management led by Luis Ramirez,His wife Rita ,Melitza,Jana and the Club Golden staff,,how can you go wrong?we got everything we asked for and more.
FOR the first time visitors,,some advice. before you storm out of your room,PLEASE read all the pamplets with your check-in.Every thing is marked,so you know how to get around.
Now to those people that complain just about every thing.Imagine trying to cook for so many different nationalities and try to please everybody..In our opinion,There is nothing wrong with the Buffets and A La Carte.
If People Make Booze their priority, then you are in a different category,
Relax, enjoy Coba and be happy ,Have a smile for your servers.
To Canadians ....Please do not tip with Canadian coins,Because foreign coins can not be exchanged in Mexico.(use American dollars.

Now at closing ,We booked for Coba for third time and counting the days till we get there ..
