“See you at New Years”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 27, 2013

We’ll let me start by explaining that I travel for a living for business and fun. I have traveled all over North America and the Caribbean. So I’m not a first time traveller.
I have been to the Bahia 16 times over the last 7 years. It is my first pick on the east coast. The reason I keep coming back is simple, consistent service. You know what you’re going to get and when. They have treated me and my guest’s very well every time we have been there. Yes there have been problems but they are very diligent in fixing them and trying to make everyone happy.
Over the last 7 years we have stay at other resorts on both the east and west coast. But have come back to the Bahia every time to the same service.
The food is always as fresh as possible with plenty of selections for every ones taste. There are three huge, different buffets to pick from all with their own twist. There is a restaurant at one of the three resorts to meet every ones culinary choice for dinner. Keep in mind your in Mexico and have fun.
There are actives to keep every member of the family busy or just sit at one of the many pools, or lounge at the beach. There is some areas of the beach that are a bit rocky but they are great for exploring the small pools of water, that have sea horse’s in them and lots of other creatures of the sea. Or they have sandy beach to swim in, or just lay in the sun. The spa’s at all three reports are great way to wind down.
There is lots of night time entertainment for all and some of the show’s I have seen many time’s but would see them again for sure ie: The Michael Jackson show is great for someone who is not a big fan of him. Just again keep in mind your in Mexico.
There are little shops to by stuff to take home and places you can buy things you may have forgotten.
Now in saying all that the place is big and has a lot to see and do. But it’s only as big as you want it to be. If you looking for a place to go, and you see no one for days this is not it. But I have been there many times when the resort is full and never felt crowded or had to wait in long lines for anything. The staffs are very friendly and are more than willing to help you with what you need. But again you’re not at home so sometimes what we expect is not the same, roll with it and you will have a unforgettable time and be one of the many people who come back again and again.

Stayed here in August, family of 4 including 2 teenage boys (17 & 15). We had 2 Rooms which was great for us, if kids were a bit younger could easily have fitted all 4 into 1 room. We booked with Virgin Holidays who have exclusive use of the Premier Lobby which is much smaller and quieter than the 3 other main Lobby areas around the site, this will suit you if you want a bit of quality time away from Brits abroad. Food excellent and good variety - recommend you book the gourmet restaurants early in your break, although the main buffet restaurant is really good.
The main Pool at COBA is great for the kids, lots of pool activities - Volley ball . water polo etc. only downside is need to get up early to reserve a sun bed. The Pools at the other areas seemed to have more empty beds. Beach was excellent, plenty on sun beds and shade. Good snorkelling within 2o metres on shore and free water sports on hand. Had never been to Mexico before and didn't know what to expect but in my view exceeds the comparable Caribbean resort - would definitely return.

Had an amazing time, my kids were crying when we left, they did not want to leave. We will return again and again. The service, food and atmosphere was great. The trolly service is always there win a maximum of 2-3 minute wait time. Staff were very friendly and there was lots to do.
The resort, rooms, pools and grounds are kept in great condition. kids really loved the waterpark, everything was so clean. Buffet was great and so were the restaurants.

Room Tip: near the waterpark

I can’t believe I have been back two months and just getting around to writing a review. We stayed for 10 nights from June 6th to 16th and had a great time. Breakfast was great, we tried the Tulum breakfast but preferred the two at our resort. Same with the lunch at the Akumel, we ended up back at the 2 in Coba or the snack bar by the pool. There is so much at the buffet that unless you don’t like food at all you will find something to eat. Staff were awesome and we did get the dinner reservations in advance. The Brazilian was okay but I have had better. However we did leave stuffed but felt a little rushed. There is no lack of good food at this resort. I would say that some guests pile their plates and then leave half to go get more. It is such an unnecessary waste of food…..

We spent a lot of time at the lobby bar with Angela, the best waitress ever. We didn’t have any issues with any of the servers as they were always smiling and helpful even when dealing with rude guests.

Only issues we had was the maid service and they weren’t on top of the mosquito invasion. We didn’t get the room cleaned properly unless we tipped which is not something we generally do every day but spread it out over our stay. Although, other guests did have great maid service in other buildings.

Some advice, DON’T get talked into a 90 minute time share presentation that will take 3 to 4 hours…….. It is a waste of precious holiday time.

It was a great holiday and we would definitely return.

Just returned from stay at Coba resort and cannot rate this resort highly enough. We were in a group of 10 there for a wedding and the entire stay was just pure pleasure. Even with a tropical storm coming to an end on the wedding day, the staff sorted everything so the big day went ahead without a hitch, in fact, the changes made it even better than originally planned. The staff here make the difference between a very good resort and a great one. Must name check Jose at the beach bar/premier bar, Naomi in the premier/coba bar and Daniel in the gourmet restaurant for being that extra bit special but all staff here are a credit. The resort is made up of three seperate areas, all linked along a glorious beach, making one big resort with countless bars/restaurants meaning each day gives you somewhere new to explore. Apart from some inconsistant internet access in the lobbys, i do not have a bad word to be said about the Grand Bahia.

Room Tip: Higher floor rooms have less humidity during rainy periods and have better views.

We have just returned from our 3rd visit to the Bahia Principe in Akumal. We spent 9 days there from August 12th to 21st. We have also stayed in the past at Palladium, Barcello Maya and Grand Sirenis but find the Bahia Principe to be great value.

We read through many of the reviews in advance of booking as it has been a couple of years since our last visit. My wife were travelling with our 17 year old daughter and her friend. Emailing the Bahia in advance they were fantastic to get us adjoining rooms in building 3b and booked all of our restaurant reservations in advance.

Staff: The staff has always been great but overall we all agreed that the staff as a whole seemed more attentive and more upbeat that we remembered. They were all pleasant and eager to please. Carlos at the Coba beach bar did a fabulous job of pleasantly dealing with the volume. On our last night, our daughter and her friend decided that curfew meant I lost my watch in Spanish. When I finally decided to panic and finished wandering around aimlessly, the front desk was fantastic. I expected to be brushed off and to go back to my room and wait for them. Instead I was told "Don't panic sir, this happens all of the time, you can sit here and wait or go back to your room but don't look for them as we will find them for you". They actually notified security and all the tram drivers with the description of the two girls. Within 5 minutes they had them on a tram and headed to the lobby to meet up with me (they were of course fine and were in a snack bar with friends). I could not have been happier with the response. I got the sense that they have a lot of practice in doing this with late teenagers.

Tipping: We saw no indications of any of the staff expecting to be tipped. We tended to tip a dollar or two for the staff who offered great service and in every case it was happily and graciously received. We tipped after the service was delivered not in advance to try to influence the service.

Beach bar: This was one of the areas that we saw major improvement. In the past it was also a bit of a contest to get served in order that you arrived with guests trying to more up in the order by flashing dollars or just generally being obnoxious. This year they served every guest in order (kids included) that they arrived by moving everyone clockwise around the circular bar as they were served. Fantastic!!

Beach: I read complaints about the "whales" (large sandbags off the shoreline) impacting the view of the ocean. For those who might find this an issue, there are no lack of view locations where the whales are not visible and you have an uninterrupted view of the ocean. I personally think the whales are great as they provide a break allowing the beach to be maintained and calms the water so you can sit an enjoy the amazingly warm waters even during storms. We had 1.5 days of a tropical storm blow through and even on the stormiest day we could sit in the water (although it was too cold to enjoy). We enjoyed the Coba beach (the beach area which is actually closest to the larger Akumal pool) the most as it provided for snorkelling, sitting in the water, entry into the water without worrying about water shoes and still close to the pools and beach bar.

Cleanliness: There are reviews of people raving about how clean it is and others complaining that the resort is dirty. We found the resort to be as spotless as it could be without removing all the guests. If you watch the resort management (dressed in white dress shirts) if they are walking on the path and come across garbage they always pick it up and put it into the trash bins. They don't ask the staff to do it, they actually clean it up themselves. The beach wash rooms can become a little messy but they clean them often and the wash rooms in the main facilities are spotless. We found the grounds immaculate and our room was very clean (not perfect - we had issues with the young lad who was cleaning our room).

Beach/pool chairs: Yes, if you want pool chairs you need to play the towel game. I don't blame the Bahia for that as they do have signs but unfortunately how do you enforce it. How do you differentiate between someone who puts his towel out and doesn't 'show up again for four hours and the person who is at the beach for 30 minutes or having lunch. You would need full time staff at each pool just watching chairs. The Akumal activities pool has the smallest number of chairs and to get chairs there you need to have towels out by 6:45. Closer to 7:45 at the other chairs. The good news is that you don't need to worry about the beach as they never run out of chairs including chairs which are shaded. We particularly liked the beach location behind the large Akumal pool as it was a short walk in either direction to the sheltered bay areas, a short walk to the bar, a short walk to both Akumal pools, unencumbered view of the ocean, the sound of ocean waves and only a two minute walk for lunch.

Trams: In the past in order to take a tram from location to location you had to be prepared to wait. We found the trams far more plentiful, more frequent and the drivers more eager to stop and pick you up. Although we enjoy the walking we found ourselves using the trams more often this time for the above reasons. This was regardless of time of day. We particularly found that if the trams weren't busy they would actually stop and ask you where you were going and would take you there even if it is not on there route.

Food: The buffet food I would classify as good. Certainly not great but there is always something to eat for everyone. We stopped going to the main buffet for breakfast and ate at the small restaurant (Cozumel) as the food was very fresh, the staff great and much quieter.
The snack bar food at the Akumal we thought was very limited. The A-la-carte's that we experienced were:

Le Gourmet - fantastic service and the steak and salmon were excellent (even by Western Canadian standards)

Don Pablo (Tulum) - service was excellent as well, entres very good but not as good as Le Gourmet. The desserts were a disappointment, avoid the Creme Caramel.

Mikado - ask for the show table if possible - a great time and the food was very good

Our only negative from this stay was a really poor cleaning staff for our room. We had a young
guy who insisted on taking our towels in the morning and only 50% of the time brining us new towels. Sometimes we would get no hand towels, sometimes only one of our two rooms would get large bath towels. When we asked for extra towels we were told no. It became a bit of a running joke with us as we got back to the room at the end of the day to see what we had. Frankly, we waited too long to complain to management (day 6) and when we did we no longer had any towel issues. We also tip the cleaning staff daily but with this guy we stopped after day 2 as the service was just not what it should be; although he did a great job with the sheets.
As an aside on the beds, there was a topper on our bed so it was extremely comfortable. The air conditioning and fans worked well in both room and the rooms had no smells in them although the room would smell muggy pretty quickly if the air conditioning was left off with the doors shut.

I hope this helps those who are deciding if the Bahia Principe is right for them.

3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 25, 2013

Stayed at this resort, at the coba, August 13 for two weeks, and was glad to get home. After paying a great amount of money to stay at this so called 5 star resort, we felt that we had been given false information by reading the virgin holiday brochure! Where do I start? When we checked in and proceeded to our room as a golden club member, the smell of mold and damp soil hit us as we walked in. We were on the ground floor and had payed for two rooms next door to each other, but due to the smell returned to the lobby and asked to be moved. As the resort was so busy we were told that we could not be moved for 3 days as it was difficult to get two rooms together. We totally understood this problem and Antonio at the front desk was more than helpful with this issue. But we had to live out of our suitcases for 3 days which was not the best start to our 5 star holiday! 24 hour room service, what a joke, it took 3 days to get the room service menu, after many phone calls to the reception, where staff do not understand or speak good english. Antonio on reception was outstanding and after being moved to much better rooms with interconecting doors( which was much better as we were with our daughters) we were told by Antonio any further problems he would sort them out for us.
There were not enough sunbeds in the resort for the amount of people, and you had to get up at the crack of dawn to stand any chance of getting any! Ignorant people who reserved beds with towels then did not use them until tea time were common place, really irritating!!!!!! Pool towels were never replaced in our room, which as a golden club guest were promised, and it was just as bad to get fresh towels around the pools. The pool staff were rude and shrugged that the washine machine was broke, what every day?? Yet another let down.
The food in the buffets were repetative and service was hit and miss, depending on where you ate. A l'a carte was also hit and miss, the best 2 being Mikado, japenese restaurant with a great show table, and Arlequin in Akumal, great food and service. Food was not what was expected for a 5 star resort, as we have been to other countries for alot less money and lower ratings, we were really dissapointed and were constantly ill, but cannot say if it was the food or something else.
If you can speak spanish, then this resort is for you, as you would get preferential treatment before english speaking guests. This was happening alot throughout our holiday, and to people that we spoke to.
All in all this was an average holiday and not what was expected when we booked our holiday. After paying a large amount of money you do not get what you pay for, not a vip experience that was promised.
THINK TWICE before you book this holiday, it is not all it says.

Room Tip: Higher floors seem to be better, with shaded rooms smelling of mold and damp.

Dear Tripadvisor user,

We would like to thank you for your choosing us. We really appreciate that you took time to share your opinion about your stay because we truly believe if we listen to our guests, we will grow better.

Regarding the inconvenient with the sunbeds, we inform you that we have advised our staff around the pool. The humidity is a reality we have to face in some of our rooms, it goes up and down depending on the season or the weather. It is a natural issue in all along the Riviera Maya and our housekeeping and maintenance department do their very best to fight it day by day.

It is important to remark that all our guests are very valuable and we have qualified staffs who speak more than two or three languages so that everybody receive the treatment they are worthy.

Please accept our sincerest apologies. Rest assured we are taking corrective actions so we can offer the service our guest are worthy of.

We hope you decide to visit us again; we assure you we will exceed your highest expectations.
