We've just returned from this resort hotel and what a monster it is! 1st impressions are very good the grounds and gardens are excellent always being tended to and look lovely as do the swimming pools and whirl pools etc.
You need to leave a trail of breadcrumbs to find your room again as it's all so spread out. We got given a map but because there are a few things left off it you can't always be sure where you are! There are little golf carts with drivers and mini bendy buses that roam around the site on routes to ease the walking etc. We got soaked one night going to our restaurant for dinner in getting lost. A staff driver wasn't instantly enthusiastic about giving us a lift to the right place but thankfully relinquished in the end.... They couldn't help the rain but some more umbrellas around the place would have been good!? nearly as rare as a free sunbed at 8am round the pool lol?!

At the beach....it's lovely. No rubbish, clear water and lush sand. You have more time to get your sunbed here but past 10:30-11ish its more like hunt the thimble. For 5 star i found this scenario annoying. Drinks are on the beach obviously all inclusive; but we had to go get them unlike previous 5 star trips :-/ Also bit of a queue here, quite a lack of staff i thought, often waiting over 20mins ..prob longer as i didn't start timing straight away. Not that i was in rush for anything though.

The room - clean and nicely attended every day. One day they forgot the towels...no problem at all - phoned up and some were promptly delivered; however, when I went to get into the shower, there was no water at all!! I've never experienced this anywhere before! It was on and off for ages right when we were getting ready to go out. Reception was engaged permanently while this was going on and as expected, when the water was back on, it was dirty as expected ! No explanation was ever given so I asked when I was personally at reception a day later - the receptionist replied...'oh yes it happens all the time' ??? didn't know what to say after that. Water remained dirty if you ran a bath; looked like someone pissed in it. Also the night we had continuous heavy rain we were in a top floor suite and by morning water had leaked through the ceiling over the floor... I've never seen this before. The other thing that couldn't be forgotten to mention was he damp musty smell every time you walked into the room. I know others have commented that this tended to clear with airing the room but we found this not to be the case and remained right through our stay. Moreover, on return to the UK and unpacking our bags, the damp smell persisted on on our clothes! Urgh!

Food. The restaurants were ok. Portafinos and the gourmet being the best. I would concur with most other reviews about mediteraneo and the main buffet areas being not so good especially about food being cold in some baine marries, best to just test something you fancy to see if its hot enough. The selection however is extensive and there is something and more to tempt everybody. The main buffets are also kept clear and neat. The 24 hr snack bars however are less so. They are generally fairly deplete of hot food and replenishing them is slow.
The bars are great however; the measures are generous and particularly the swim up bars in the pools are good fun.

The pools - as said above, they are very well maintained and the water is crystal clear, if not a little too COLD!!

Spa - amazing massage!

Entertainment - full shows every night - excellent performances - but not sure why we had to pay a supplemental 17 dollars on one night for the mexican show!?! Don't miss the chap at the hacienda spray painting pictures - incredible to watch and reasonably priced - he will also take requests and paint a picture for you exclusively if you ask!

Excursions - we went out one day on a tour company organised trip to chichen itza - cramped poorly air conditioned minibus for 3 hours there and similarly back - there is an upgrade you can pay for a roomier coach with toilets and drinks on board which we wished we had paid. Despite this, the place was stunning and stopped off for a delightful lunch at a local restaurant with a dancing show. Well worth it.

Swimming with dolphins was absolutely amazing!! Paid extra for it but not excessive. However, they get their money on the photo CD and DVD afterwards!!

Tour operator and flights - Flew as a package with Thomas Cook - not greatly organised and rep in resort was friendly but didn't really seem bothered about providing us with any information. BA flight (not unexpectedly !) was below par - service poor and unattentive; food appalling and entertainment on way back failed completely - not impressive for a 9 hour flight!!!
Also be prepared to take 3 hours to get through customs in mexico - long dawdling queues with few staff on duty despite the large number of coinciding flights arriving!

Overall, a good holiday - a few niggles, but didn't spoil our stay at all.

PS - avoid the club privilege reps at all cost!!! They hound you daily to 'show' you their luxury time share accommodation claiming it will only take 90 minutes of your time - this is a complete lie - they took up our entire morning despite us saying we had to be elsewhere and got rather aggressive that we were not prepared to stay longer than the 3 and a half hours that we had already wasted listening to their drivel.

First of all I was very scared when I read the reviews after buying our tickets this was our honeymoon and I was expecting top notch and boy oh boy did I get just that! I just want to thank Felix for reassuring me that we wouldn't be dissapointed and he was right. Carlos and his trainee at the beach were so nice any drink u wanted they made. The coconut drinks were out of this world I miss them already. Renee and Pedro at the swim up bar were so nice and entertaining that we wished we would of met u guys on the first day not the second last day Renee u make the best myan monkeys ever. Maria was so nice in helping us with our excursions the pirate ship was so much fun pinky u rock . The food was so amazing we ate at mikados wonderful show table was soooo much fun Dolce vita the Italian restaurant was so yummy definately the shrimp was the highlight of my entree . And don Pablo was our favorite surf and turf was to die for :))) . The service was wonderful I would rate the food and service 5 stars. My husband and I can't wait to come back in nov. See u soon Renee and Carlos keep up the good work. The only dissapointment was how rude some of the guests were to the staff come on people these people work HARD for their money a little love goes a long way. My advise would be book ur ala carts ahead of time so u get the time you want . Hope this helps u won't be dissapointed my first review ever and if it was bad I wouldn't lie about it that's for sure Darlene C

We just got back on 16th and had great time! Starting from the check-in until check-out everyone went extra step forward to get their guests happy! We were two couples and called in prior our arrival to reserve the rooms in quiet area. Upon arrival were given two rooms in different buildings but then they gave us much better deal, just ask! The food, the beach, their landscaping, everything was stunning! We loved all of the buffets in all three resorts (we didn't visit Sian Ka'an) but didn't like the Italian and Mediterranean restaurants just because so much waiting time for so little food on the plate! :) lol We loved the Mexican "Tequila" though, it was much quicker, you have a salad bar with a lot of many choices and before they bring your ordered meal you can start on those. BUT, Kukulkan buffet is the rock!!! just tip the waiter up front and you'll get much faster response!! The Coba beach is the best!!! The only thing is that you are not allowed to snorkel in the reefs in front of their beaches, but still we were able to see fish on this side of the buoys. we would suggest to the management to get the trolleys/carts come and go more often than 15 min. sometimes it is much faster to walk than to wait, but during the rainy days (yes, we got 3 days of rain out or 7 vacationing) it would be nice to have a ride not wasting much time. Even though it is warm there, take extra pieces of clothing, since the washed ones won't get dry overnight or throughout a day because of humidity; or if you can afford, order the laundry service (we were on the budget and were fine without it). Other wise, everything else was awesome!!! Thanks a lot!

Gorgeous location, terrible service, questionable facilities. We travel every month, and visited this place three years ago and loved it. This time.. it has really gone downhill. Recycled food, mouldy smelling rooms... the fitness facilities are so smelly that you can't even go in them! Service was repetively terrible... and nobody seems to care. We spent big bucks to be in the golden club and it was just terrible. Also had extra charges on my bill that were not mine, showed up for massages that were booked and confirmed with no therapists available for either of us. Internet never worked.. but was charged for it.

Don't make the mistake of booking this place... if you are looking for a five star (which is how they market themselves) be prepared for 2 star service and food.

Cheers, Chuck

Wow!!! That sums this hotel up in one word! The rooms are very big and clean. The staff are so helpful they can't do enough for you! The pools are lovely, we preferred the quiet pool but also enjoyed the activity pool.
We ate at the Mediterranean, Italian, Mexican twice, brazilian, Japanese and gourmet by far the best was the Japanese, they do tepanyaki and the food is to die for but we enjoyed them all! Even in the buffet restaurants there was so much choice
The beach is just gorgeous and the cocktails WOW the miami vice was my favourite
Whilst we were there we did the trainer for the day dolphin experience and co co bongos bar crawl, both were amazing and well worth the money, I'd also recommend taking a collectivo from outside the hotel into playa del Carmen it was only £6 each for a return trip and took about 35 minutes but the beach there is beautiful

All in all there is absoloutly nothing bad to say about this resort! I can't wait to go back!!

Visited as a family of 6 (kids, parents, grandparents)

We completely loved our vacation, and we have since referred several friends and family to this resort! Great value, and a great resort!!

We absolutely loved our time at Coba, and the entire complex in general.

Some specific compliments:
- Grounds and facilities- absolutely BEAUTIFUL/IMPECCABLY CLEAN/WELL MAINTAINED!
- Food – amazing variety, well prepared, nice presentation, very clean/safe serving practices
- Staff – wonderful!! Everyone we encountered seemed genuinely friendly, and hard working.
- Special thanks to: Pillar & Demi in the Kukulcan Buffet – Jose at the front desk – Head Chef in the Buffet, he was lovely – Mariachi Band that visited the Buffet – they were hilarious!
- Beach had a variety of ‘scenes’ although we tended to stay near the artificial ‘cove’ area with our youngest son. He loved having the freedom to go out on his own and see the fish. We loved that it was sheltered from the waves, and shallow enough for exploring. Loungers were at a premium in this area though, but we were always able to find some, just not always 6 together.

Room for improvement:
-Coba pool animation staff – ‘main’ man doing most of the microphone duties while we were there (Nov 30-Dec 8) was extremely loud and obnoxious…also was drinking a LOT on the job…I understand that this is part of the role that they play, but there were times when he was visibly drunk, and became very loud (screaming into the microphone) and obnoxious. There was one night where this continued on until past 7:30pm – and every word could be heard from our 3rd floor room, with the patio doors closed! This was the one person who ‘rubbed us the wrong way’ out of hundreds of staff…and it was just our ‘opinion’ – some people LOVED him, and his hijinks…we just found that it go to the point where it was no longer family friendly, and there wasn’t an option to avoid it.

Rooms –very large, and had everything we needed. Could do with a little refreshing…maybe swap out the patterned bed spreads and curtains and replaced with a solid colour? LIGHTING could also be much improved!! Jetted Tub was nice, and we didn’t have any issues with the shower spraying on the floor. AC worked fine, but we did find things a little musty, even on the 3rd floor, however it wasn’t a deal breaker! Had a BEAUTIFUL view of the pool and grounds, and did not notice noise from other rooms (except our kids next door!)

Overall a beautiful facility that is run with amazing efficiency. Kudos to the entire staff!! We would not hesitate to return to Coba with our family – we’re thinking of making it a bi-annual tradition, so look for us in 2013!

Side note: we used AGI Transfers for a private airport/resort transfer….they were fantastic!! We got there quickly, and avoided the cattle herd check in that we would have experienced with the ‘bus’ transfer. I’d recommend them to anyone!!

Please feel free to contact me with any specific questions!!

Cheers~

Room Tip: We really liked Villa 31 with a view of the pool. Close to the lobby.

Me and my wife stayed at the Coba (6th time) 2 weeks in June 2011. As usual we had a great time. Good food, excelent service at buffets, retaurantes and bar at the premier club. I want to mention some employees names and due to their dedication and services:
Jose Emilio (Los Cocos Beach Bar)
Madga and Mauricio (Main Buffet)
Humberto ( always kept our room spotless)
All servers at the premier club bar.
We will go back again in June.

Room Tip: Rooms by quite poll are central and close to lobby and restaurantes.
