Our stay at Villa Zen del Mar was in fact a zen experience. We landed in Cancun in May 2014 where a car was arranged to pick us up. It was an easy drive to “Zen” and upon arrival we immediately began to shed the stresses of the prior many months. Any concerns I might have had about sharing a Villa with multi-generations of 12 people were put to rest as the villa and surrounds were better than advertised to accommodate our large group. The pool, the furnishings, and the large kitchen were made for large groups or intimacy – whatever one’s needs – such was the attention to detail throughout the Villa. Very important to us was a level of privacy afforded by retreating to any of the en suite rooms, a secluded spot on the beach or in one of the Adirondack chairs positioned around the Villa to take in the waves and turtle watching (turtles nest here – really amazing to see). I spent many hours swimming and then sitting poolside sipping a delicious cocktail with the freshest fruit, a great view of the sea, and a good book.
After our arrival, the rest of our group of family and friends began trickling in, each immediately kick-starting their retreat with either a very short walk into town, in and around the pool or on the beach. The staff was unobtrusive, seeming to appear whenever needed, were friendly and polite and took great pleasure in taking care of us. The chef services were better than a good restaurant, so we only ate out twice at La Lunita for dinner and the Bakery Café for lunch.
Some of the “parents” were concerned about safety but that was quickly dispelled with security on the street and a few walks around the very peaceful and gentle environment.
While I vow to be tech-free when away, good wifi is essential, and I had connectivity throughout our stay.
I have had great experiences at 5 star resorts but ZEN stands out as one of my best vacations and this was seconded by one and all of our diverse group. There was something for everyone. We will be returning to this Villa next year for two weeks.

We cant say enough good things about our stay at Villa Zen Del Mar. The house is gorgeous, and very well maintained. It is a 5 minute walk down the beach to the town of Akumal, where there are bars, restaurants, fishing boats, snorkel rentals, stores, etc. There are kayaks and boogie boards at the house. We had 13 people in our extended family group and the house and pool/beach area never felt crowded. There is security at night. And every night, we watched turtles digging their nests. The villa is also close to Xel Ha and many small but fun cenotes.
Rarely is something better than advertised, well Zen del Mar is all that and more. We have stayed in five different Villas and when this one said it was “more” luxurious we wondered if it was true.
We had two wonderful weeks, and our families came from two coasts, we had most of our meals at the table that was set up for all 12 of us looking at the Ocean.
The staff, was service trained, you could tell, our Spanish is not great and neither was their English yet, it all worked out. We were thrilled to be served fresh fruits every morning by the maid, Blanca. Afternoons, she made us Guacamole and Salsa sauce with Mexican chips.
We also had a chef come in for my Mother’s Birthday as a surprise-even she was surprised how good it was.
I was concerned that the bedrooms would be small and they were all big with new King sized beds-which were great-one teenager slept in every day until noon. The design of the house is big and obviously beautifully decorated- we all felt we found our own space to hang out. The location of Zen is great. A big plus is that the kids could walk into town on the beach so we did not have to drive them around.
The town of Akumal has Restaurants, Bars and trinket shops and three really good dive shops with expert diving instructors. You can snorkel directly in front of the Villa and we went out almost every day in the kayaks that were there.
We loved going to visit the beaches in Tulum, about 15 minutes away, but will not stay there, too touristy and noisy, we return to our heavenly Zen. We will be back, I hope before next year- this was the best vacation ever for a group of our size. I give it 5 stars- a great recommendation.
