“Perfect Winter Getaway”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 4, 2014

We stayed 10 days in February to get away from the English winter. It was a constant 28 degrees - heaven! Not normally a fan of all inclusive holidays but we couldn't fault it - the buffet was extensive and you get to book an allotted amount of a la carte restaurants per week which made a change, all of which we really enjoyed. The bar staff were great - you could have any drink/cocktail going, generously poured and you could help yourself to an alcoholic slushie at the pool bar. The hotel itself and grounds are immaculate. The wildlife is amazing - iguanas everywhere, raccoons, coatis and agouti. The entertainment staff are excellent, especially Kevin Casas, Eli, Alex and Saidy. They remember your name from day one and are great at encouraging you to join in the daytime activities; mini golf, table tennis, aqua aerobics, beach volleyball, quizzes, pool games etc. There are plenty of quiet pools if you don't want to join in and we enjoyed the fact that you can travel around the other hotels in the complex on the free transport if you fancy a change of scenery. The snack bar by the beach was our favourite place for lunch, overlooking the ocean - this part of the beach had wave breakers which was great for snorkeling and relaxing, as the rest of the ocean was quite rough. Evening entertainment was good for the most part, we even watched the same show when it was repeated at Akumal. On the whole this was an excellent holiday, one of the best we have had and we look forward to returning again in the future.

Booked through FunJet Vacations. 90 minutes from Cancun airport via private shuttle. Check-in and a la carte restaurant reservations were quick and without incident. Golf cart took us and our baggage to our room straight away.

We were in Tulum room 633. We came to like this location as it was close to lobby, pools and beach. 3rd floor (up 2 flights of stairs), glimpse of the ocean from the balcony. We emailed the resort a week before our trip with the request for a top floor room and an ocean view, and that’s pretty much what we got. Nice room, good housekeeping, stocked minibar and a basket of fruit. Sofa, desk and king bed. Large screen TV never got turned on. Ask for safe lock & key when checking in.

Big resort! Lots of guests being transported by trams and golf carts. Tulum seemed best for us, since we gravitate towards the beach. Akumal had nicer pools. Did not feel crowded at any time.

Buffet was very good, with lots of food selection as you would expect at an all-inclusive. Table service at the buffet was spotty, especially at breakfast. Not air conditioned, but windows could be opened for the breeze. Ate at 3 a la cart restaurants: Tequilla, seafood restaurant at Akumal, and Japanese restaurant at Coba. All were good with very good service. Outdoor, 24-hour beach snack bar was close-by and good spot for lunch, although food selection was limited and occasionally ran out. Lots of birds waiting to steal your food if you left the table!

Tulum bar was nice, with music in evening and an outdoor seating area we enjoyed before dinner. Drinks were good.

Resort has a fair amount of gardens and foliage, many iguanas and a number of small mammals that I didn’t recognize.

Evening entertainment was forgettable or worse! I would say don’t bother. Activities at the pool (“crazy games”) were more entertaining, and we had fun watching some of these while enjoying drinks at the swim-up bar.

The beach was quite long (maybe a mile?) although fairly narrow. Bring water shoes if you plan to go into the ocean, as it is variably rocky. Never had a problem finding 4 lounge chairs together (under palapas for shade if you wanted). It was a 5 minute walk down the beach to the water sports center, where you could reserve Hobie Cats for 1 hour of use that day between 10am and 5pm (get there at 9am for sign-up) if wind is not too strong. These are fun if you can sail; otherwise, this would be a difficult place to learn because, close to shore, you are jammed in with several dive boats at mooring and there are restricted areas both to the north and south. They also had sit-on-top kayaks and wind surfers (no charge).

Snorkeling on site was disappointing, as the only accessible reef (down by the Akumal end of beach) was very poor although there were fish to look at. A protected section of reef is roped off from swimming/snorkeling. Go to Akumal beach or Yal Ku (both very close) to snorkel for a much better experience! Concrete “whales” 30 meters offshore prevent wave action reaching the beach. Some people objected to these, others played on them. To each their own!

I’m a kiteboarder, and the last 3 days of our stay were windy (15-25 mph) so I had some fun. The section of beach at the far north end of resort (by Tequilla restaurant and wedding gazebo) was probably the best for this activity, as it was uncrowded and without obstructions. I’d suggest notifying the lifeguards (on duty from 9 to 5?) beforehand for their advice & consent – they were cool about it. The beach is too narrow for unassisted launch/landing if you are not expert. I took a 12m kite, which was about right for the windier days. If you want to kite more days, bring something larger (like a 16m) because, based on this and 3 prior trips, many days have lighter (less than10 mph) wind. 40 pound bag limit (Spirit airlines) prevented me from doing this.

No “Spring Breakers”! Enough said.

Overall, this resort is fairly comparable to others we have visited in the southern Riviera Maya: Grand Sirenis and Barcelo (Beach and Tropical). They all have their plusses and minuses. Sirenis had better food and entertainment but not much beach, while Barcelo had wonderful gardens and an accessible reef for snorkeling but was more crowded with Spring Breakers. I would not be scared off by the negative reviews on Trip Advisor, which I suspect are either posted by people who make complaining their hobby or have unreasonable expectations.

We went on a couple of excursions off the resort (Tulum ruins, Akumal beach, Yal Ku estuary & nearby cenotes) plus one that was on-site. This was an eco-jungle tour, which turned out to be quite interesting. Call a day in advance to make reservations. Tour meets at the tennis courts (5 minute walk from lobby) at 10am, where everyone gets a bike for a 15 minute ride over the highway (there is a bridge) to the Sian Kaan section of the resort past the golf course. Then an hour walk through the jungle on a pathway to look at trees, flowers, birds and butterflies; up a tower for a treetop view; and, visits to 2 cenotes as well as the nursery where many native plants are cultivated. We found out that the ants bite quite painfully (don’t stand on them!), and several of the trees are poisonous. You are advised to wear long pants and proper shoes for this tour, so not sure I would do this on a hot day. Bug spray and water was provided. No charge but tipping is advised, since this seems to be run by an organization unaffiliated with Grand Bahai (?).

I went on this trip with a couple friends and loved every single minute of it. I honestly can’t think of one bad thing to say. The resort was beautiful, the food was great and the staff was helpful and extremely friendly. No matter who you're travelling with, you will have a good time. The food was good, a lot better than expected considering what I've heard from other travelling to Mexico. We also ate at three of the “A La Carte” Restaurants including the Brazilian Steakhouse, a Mexican Restaurant and the International Restaurant. Don’t remember the names but they were all great, however the International was AMAZING! Highly recommend both the International, as well as the Brazilian to anyone. One of the other stand out from the trip was the staff. Every single person we encountered was just so happy and helpful at all times. We ended up spending a lot of time with the entertainment staff who also made our trip amazing. Each and every one of them. Once you meet them, you’ll see what I mean, especially Kevin. He went out of his way to make sure we were always having a good time and my thanks go to him! If you see him, tell him Daniel says “Si Kevin”. haha All in all this was a great trip and I wouldn’t hesitate to go back to the same spot.

It was a wonderful trip that nobody wanted to end. We stayed 7 days, but lost a day because of bad traveling times. We spent most of our time lounging by the pool and playing on the beach volleyball court.

The food was of very high quality, but nothing too spectacular. The service was fantastic at all restaurants including the buffet.

The rooms were some of the best I've ever stayed at. The beds were comfortable and weren't too wet from the humidity. The rooms did not stink of any unpleasant smell either.

One complaint would be the beach. It is a rather small beach, not exactly in length but in width. There isn't too much free sand, and what little there is can be quite rocky. The water too was very rocky in parts, but still usable in certain areas. The sandwhales prevented any big waves for kids to play in, but were also fun for kids to play on.

The highlight of the trip would have to be the entertainment staff. They are reason enough for you to come back to the resort. Having many kids in our party, allowed us to get involved with the entertainers daily and get to know them. Our favourites were Kevin and Martin from the entertainment staff. They learned all 13 of our names in a matter of hours and would seek us out everyday. They are very easy to talk to, but can also be very funny and entertaining (as their job title implies).

In conclusion, the trip was everything we could have hoped and would absolutely recommend it to all and especially those with kids who would like to get involved in activities.

Stayed at this resort for a week early March and had a great vacation. The resort, beach, pool and grounds were immaculate. We enjoyed the food in the resorts but found the seafood was not great, but everything else was excellent. Staff were great, the one negative was we had upgraded to Diamond status and when we arrived at the Resort it was dark, we were taken to a separate building for express check-in and then taken to a block of room and dropped off with our luggage. We didn't have a clue where our room was & had to carry our luggage up 3 flights of stairs and then search for our room. When we left, we were not picked up at our room and again had to carry our luggage to the lobby in the dark. This was the only negative during our stay.

We will definitely be returning.

We just got back from a twelve-day stay at the Grand Bahia Principe Tulum and had a wonderful vacation there. We found the staff to be friendly and most accommodating with regards to our needs, wishes and concerns. Upon arrival, we felt the room assigned to us was too close to four noisy air conditioning units sitting on the roof of the Gran Tortuga restaurant, which was right in front of our balcony and, since we had requested a quiet room, we went to the VIP desk in the reception area and asked for another room. Immediately, Luis stepped in and attended to our concerns. He worked the phones and the computer for a few minutes and came back to us with an alternate room he felt could suit us best. He accompanied us on the trolley to room 3121 and went in with us to make sure it was to our liking. Now, in my book, that’s going the extra mile. Of all the years we’ve travelled, no one from management ever went out of his way to attend to our needs the way he did.

We had made advanced reservations for specialty restaurants prior to leaving Montreal. We sent an email to Wendy Garcia at the resort and she made the bookings, avoiding us the struggle to get reservations upon arrival, which is always a pain in the neck. All and all, the resort became a friendly place and the PR manager called us to say that if we were ever in need of something, all we had to do is call her and she would deal with it. Look, it’s an all-inclusive resort. We’re talking mass tourism here. It’s not a five star resort, and yet you sense they want to do right by you. What more can you ask for?

Our twelve days were spent stress free, which means we played tennis every morning, had a glorious breakfast every day and always managed to find a great spot on the beach without having to struggle to find a palapas or two beach chairs. There comes a time when you look at the money invested versus the return on investment and you have to come to the conclusion that you’re getting a hell of a good deal.

In closing, I say kudos to the gardeners, the true unsung heroes of the place. The tend and manicure the place which, after all, is the jungle! It is impecabbly looked after and if you bother to talk to one of them, you’ll find they’re full of information and more than happy to assist you. The same goes for the kitchen staff. The variety and the quality of the food is quite amazing. And if ever you should want something that’s not on the menue, they’ll be more than happy to prepare it for you. No, really, we’ve just spent twelve incredible days in that small piece of paradise and we’d go back in a heartbeat.
