“Not sure what could have been better”
Reviewed January 6, 2014

We travelled with another family and were there for a week over New Years. What a fantastic resort. It was clean, family friendly, and fun. The staff were always helpful and willing to do whatever we needed.
The weather was great.
The beach was kept clean, the entertainment staff were fantastic and the bar staff were so friendly.
I would absolutely recommend this place and would go back tomorrow if I had the opportunity.
We were 4 adults and 4 teens and it had something for everyone to enjoy.
Heaven on earth in my opinion.

Room Tip: We were on the ocean in Villa 5. We had adjoining rooms with us in a king sized bed and the kids in...

I have been to the grand bahia twice, and my parents have been over 10 times. It is by far our favourite resort. It's great for a 2 week holiday; such a big resort, so much to do. One of my favourite activities was going across the street to snorkel in the cenotes and see the zoo. So inexpensive, and totally worth it! The management and serving staff are excellent. We've gone to other resorts, but always find ourselves returning to the grand bahia because nothing else compares! The food is always excellent and fresh, and we've never gotten sick. For christmas this year we went to the Royal Decameron in Puerto Vallarta and got extremely ill with food poisoning. We went to the Grand Bahia two years ago for Christmas, and I wish that we hadn't made the mistake of booking at the Royal Decameron.

We are not the "usual" resort types however we went to Grand Bahia Principe Tulum for our honeymoon as we thought it would make a nice relaxing change from rushing around on public transport and staying in hostels and budget hotels.
The people you meet are to be expected at a large resort, the nicest seemed to be Canadians on the whole.
On arrival we were offered an up grade at Akumal lobby so of course we said "yes please". We were then sent to lobby Tulum where they had no idea we were coming and said they only had a twin room and suggested that as a honeymooning couple we could push the beds together. After some difficulty, tears and about an hour and a half we got our wrist bands up graded to Exclusive guests and a king sized bed. In the end these two things and the staff at Tulum made a huge positive difference to our holiday. In retrospect I don't believe Akumal ever had our room and so off loaded the problem to another lobby on the same resort.
The pools and beaches were lovely although be aware more savy holiday makers will put towels on sun loungers at crack of dawn so get there early if you want to spend your day on a lounger.
We went with virtually no money then realised that everyone else was tipping and felt awkward so be aware you might want to take a handful of one 1$ bills for afternoons on the resort to tip bar and waiting on staff.
The staff were fantastic and pretty much bent over backwards to make sure our holiday was stress free and were far more knowledgeable about the local area than our reps.
The restaurants were a fairly high standard but fill up very quickly, we learnt from other holiday makers that bookings can be made on line before getting to the hotel, I would advise you do this as we missed out on a restaurant we wanted to go to.
Drinks were great and the measure huge. The buffet meals were an extensive selection and perfectly good.
We had a great time despite this not being our type of holiday and the resort is well placed for seeing chichen itza, Tulum & Coba mayan ruins on days out. Also I would strongly advise going to Coco Bongos for a night out.

If you want a high end destination, keep looking. If you want a mid value facility and don't mind 900 other families milling about then this property is OK. The best part is the friendly staff. Unfortunately, there were never enough chairs or towels for our needs. Also the "extras" are very pricey so bring along your money roll. Food was of fair quality but wide variety. The fish was uniformly awful but some of the vegies were good. Deserts were attractive to look at but very uninspired to taste. We don't drink much but there are bars all over with lines of drinkers waiting for their cocktail. The pool was cold and there is no hot-tub to use. The rooms have A/C but it wroks poorly blowing out high humidity and moldy air: we did not use it. If you want to use a safe in the room, expect to pay extra. WiFi was useless even though I purchased the "premium" connection- ripped off for $35. Like many resorts, expect to be nickled & dimed. It took about 80 minutes to drive from the Cancun airport. If we hadn't gotten a deep discount from Expedia, I would have only given 3 stars but for the price I added back one star for value.

Room Tip: Don't pay list price.

After visiting the Gran Bahai last year we decided to return for a second time to get married here. After a lot of planning and emails between ourselves and Jazmin the wedding co-ordinator things actually worked out very well. There is a lot of things to plan when having a wedding in Mexico like all your documents must be translated into Spanish and when you arrive you have to get a blood test which costs $90 each.We booked our wedding package through the hotel and choose the unforgettable package which cost $1620 but really covered everything. We also used the Arrecife Studio for a wedding album and video although you get 15 photos with your Unforgettable package we wanted extra so we emailed the Studio and agreed a package,The package is tailor made to suit your budget and needs but can work out quite expensive. We got our album before leaving the resort and just received our video via email and we were more than pleased with both. The album was fantastic and was done to the highest standard,we were glad we choose it.
We were in room 424 and had a lovely sea view. The hotel was up to its usual high standards and we had a really good time.If we had to be picky and have one negative it would be that in the buffet we think the staff are over worked and there isnt probaly enough of them.
Looking forward to returning next year to celebrate our wedding anniversary.

Room Tip: room 424 great view

We stayed here Nov 24 – Dec 01/2013. First impression driving up to the Gran Bahia Principe Tulum was how overwhelmingly big it was. It took several days to become used to the immense size of the resort. We walked over 3 hrs around and between our hotel & the sister hotel Coba. There are trolleys for transportation around the resort, but we normally walked. We stayed at villa 25 on the main floor & although close to the beach, it was too far from everything else - the lobby, bar, buffet & tennis courts to name a few. Due to the distance, carrying drinks back to the room in the evening always meant that spillage occurred well before we got back. Although we had used large plastic glasses, we have put “Baba” cups on our packing list for the future

Our room was not a 5 star, it was just OK. Our air conditioning barely worked and all the plugs were very outdated. We could not recharge camera batteries, tablets nor laptops til we got an adapter. Fortunately, an employee at the reception desk lent us his for the week when we inquired as to where we could purchase one. It was annoying that there was a $5.00 a day charge for the very small safe in the room that could hold very little. Since this is suppose to be an all inclusive, why not just factor in that cost when advertising the all inclusive package? Same with the $7.00 charged per room on checkout for the mandatory “donation” to the hotel’s ecosystem efforts. It would be like a hidden cost. Due to mosquitoes we never sat outside at night on the patio, only once during the day when it was sunny. The internet that was suppose to be free in the lobby we were only able to connect to once.

Food at the buffet was excellent & the variety was “over the top”. This is the only buffet where I have seen egg white omelets or scrambled egg whites on the buffet without having to have request it made special by a Chef. Very Impressive! Although there were many ala cartes, we never ate at any due to too much hassle trying to book/find them and then having a set time to eat at. Never saw any night entertainment as it was located by the entrance of the hotel – too far to walk in heels & didn’t want to spend time waiting for trolleys. It also rained several days and nights.

We enjoyed shopping at the flea markets on site & seeing the iguanas, coatis & agoutis wandering on the grounds. Suppose to be deer also but we never saw any other than there were deer crossing signs posted. During the day, watching the dolphin show, or tourists in the water with them was entertaining.

The tennis courts were well maintained. Great to have a juice/water kiosk & bathrooms right on site. Eddy the Tennis Pro really knows his stuff and keeps everything fun. The tennis tournament he organized was a lot of fun for everyone who participated/watched.

The beach is beautiful and we snorkelled right from shore. There’s lots of fish in the water. Even when not snorkelling, we could see them swimming in the shallows or close to the surface. We could walk down the beach in either direction for quite a long way.

One of the reasons for staying at this hotel was its close proximity to Akumal where we snorkelled with the turtles. To get there, we took a collectivo (about 5 – 8 min ride) that we were able to catch right outside Principe’s front gates. Dropping us off at Akumal, we then walked down to the beach. It’s a very scenic area. Returning by collective to the hotel, we were dropped off on the highway across from the hotel. Very convenient.

Although there are a few minor issues with the hotel, we would stay here again but would probably request a room in closer proximity to the lobby area as villa 25 was too far away.
