“A beautiful resort in a beautiful country highly recommended!!”
Reviewed December 21, 2013

A beautiful resort which is kept impeccably clean, the food is amazing at the buffet restaurants let alone the a la cartes!!
Even though it was full to capacity you wouldn't have noticed. The staff are friendly and accommodating.
Coco Bongo and Delphinus dolphin swim and with Acamel Bay a cheap cab ride away you get to swim with turtles for virtually no cost!!(don't need to pay for the excursion)
Our Thomas Cook rep Stuart was brilliant, very honest, knowledgeable and great fun!!

We will go back!!

Our second stay at the GBP this year and I must say that I was rather disappointed by our second stay Dec 5.-19. 2013.
The staff down at the las loss snack bar was, like the first time around, absolutely great. Miguel, Braulio and Jose in particular.
Room cleanliness, well let's say to me there was a few too many critters in our room. I understand that certain bugs etc are to be expected given the climate we were in, but some bugs should not be in your room! The other thing I noticed, as compared to our first stay the rooms were being stocked very inconsistently. Sometimes we got coffee but no creamer, chips twice out of 14 days, and the sweetener never did get replenished after the first use, nor the tea bags. The room smelled musty most of the time, again the climate could be blamed for that.
I also noticed that the front desk staff is in bad need of customer service and relations courses. Seems odd especially since the rest of the staff is sooo friendly, Maria from the akumal bar is another one I'd like to mention, so happy and helpful, it was a pleasure to have her as a server every time.
The facilities, restaurants, pools and buffets are all outstanding in my opinion, the sub director Felix was awesome as well! the Privilige club I would not recommend to anyone!
The biggest disappointment was definitely the room, cleanliness of it and the front desk staff to us. In spite of all that I would likely return again as the people that work there as well as the ones we meet every time are excellent!!

Room Tip: Higher floors less critters

Dear Tripadvisor User,

Thank you very much for taking the time to write us such a detailed review about the Grand Bahia Principe Tulum hotel. It will certainly help us to keep focus on costumer satisfaction and fulfillment of our hotel standards.

We are happy to see that there are elements of resort that you quite enjoyed, however we are very concerned to read that your experience with us did not live up to our usual level of service concerning the Minibar service, housekeeping and reception staff. We have already shared it with our front department heads in order to review the situations with your room and make sure to apply the correct measure to providing excellent service and to enhance quality.

Thank you for your recommendations for other guests and you comment. We would like to take this opportunity to wish you all the best.

I hope we will be able to welcome you again soon,

With best Regards,

Reviewed December 20, 2013

I recently stayed a week at the GBP Tulum. Aside from the 5 star quality of room and food, the service was horrible. Below are the reasons
1. Hidden charge for Shows - MISREPRESENTATION & FALSE IMPRISONMENT
2. Broken TV
3. Cold Shower Water
4. Slow service at the buffet

The only notable complaint with further information is the hidden charge. The night before we left, we were given a ticket for the show by the public relations department which asked us to sign for. Although none of the shows from prior night we were given a ticket for, not thinking too much of it, we took them and signed as instructed. At checkout, we were asked to pay for $15 US per person. We were surprised by this charge, as the person who gave us the ticket mentioned nothing about charges. We tried to reason with the hotel personnel; however, they insisted that the price on the ticket was sufficient notice for the charge. When we requested to speak to their manager, they refused to inform the manager. This misrepresentation was furthered with false imprisonment, as they threatened that if we do not pay, we could not get our luggage, and security won't let us leave. After much rushing from our transportation driver, we had no choice but to pay the extra charge in the fear that we will miss our plane.
We are not mad because they charged us for the tickets. We are mad because 1) they did not inform us of this charge when we were handed the ticket, 2) when issue arises, they refused to inform their manager, 3) and most importantly, they threatened us and would not let us leave because of this issue on the part of hotel's misrepresentation.

We loved everything except the ocean swim area, too rocky. If you walk south down the beach, by the dock, there is a much better swim area with lots of fish to see.
Disapointed in the WiFi down 50% of the time.
We had a great room first floor next to the pool and drink hut
All the staff were happy smiling and always bending over backwards to make your stay memorable.
Motorized trams are all over the place and the driver will take you anywhere you need to go.
We had deserts delivered to our room in the evening without even asking for them!
Don Pablo gave you a dining experience that is out of this world.
We were served drinks while checking in at the hotel desk, (talk about starting your vacation out right) WOW.
The lobby is very impressive must be 80 feet high. (a must see)

Our 3rd visit to GBP Tulum and previous excellent standards and expectations were badly let down by a poor room allocation and reception staff who had an attitude problem as we dared to complain. We stayed from Dec 03 - Dec 17, met some excellent Housekeeping Staff (Rosario),
friendly and efficient waiters in the Yucatan restaurant (Saul) and great waitresses in the Akumal Bar (Maria) and we can only thank and praise them for their welcome and service provided during our stay.
The original room we were allocated had as per our e-mail request, a top floor sea view, but the decor and furniture were stale, tired and well below previous standards and expectations. The double bed was two singles pushed together which I find unacceptable for a 4-5 star hotel which I have previously reviewed and praised highly. Not this time !!!
After viewing the room I complained at Reception to someone wth a couldn't care less attitude who eventually agreed to change our room, but it wouldn't be for a couple days Dec 06. as it wasn't worth our while unpacking we lived out of our suitcases.
Dropped off room keys at Reception as requested at 10.00am Dec 06 and was told to return to Reception at 03.00pm to pick up keys for our new room and our repacked luggage would be transferred and in our room. Picked up keys at 03.10pm and luggage turned up at 5.30pm. Poor organisation and service just further deflated our hopes of an excellent holiday.
Don't get me wrong , as I have stayed here twice before and also in GBP Punta Cana in the Dominican, previous stays with GBP have been excellent but this time we felt so let down by the Standards and expectations that GBP have previously set, so much so that we are to attend a wedding in Riviera Maya in 2015 and are seriously considering staying elsewhere.

Room Tip: Rooms in Blocks 35- 39 would be my preference

This is a very good hotel. Facilities are good, clean and spacious. Pools were good, and beds were available up to around 10am, after that you are on the beach. Food is good, buffet huge and so you can never get bored with the options there. Booze freely available and service quicker than other all inclusives.

Wifi in lobby ok, but a bit slow, not as bad as others make out.

A few hidden costs, departure tax over £45, and £50 for safe (that's not good) and it is too small for iPad.

A la carte? Mikado excellent, portfolio is fine, pescadero is hopeless in every way, tortuga superb in every way. These discrepancies mainly down to the service levels.

Rooms a little dated, but perfectly good enough bearing in mind all you do there is sleep (family trip)

Excursions
Only booked one through Thomas Cook (more about them in a minute). Delphinus primax 4 is expensive but awesome, do it, and avoid hotel dolphins, not good. Though our room did overlook the hotel dolphinariium and that was nice to see every morning.
Tulum ruins done using collectivo local buses, £3 each to get there, £3 each to get in ruins, sorted
Coba ruins booked private taxi for £20 each (7 in bus) and had the bus for the ruins (another £3) to get in and well worth it as you can climb a very high and steep temple. Then he took us to a cenote (underground lake) for a swim. Had a five hour excursion at a fraction of the cost from tour company
The word is, don't bother with chichen itzA, 3hrs away

Thomas Cook
Good- Stuart the rep gave us some good recommendations dolphins and Tulum. Price!
Bad- flights awful, way too many screaming kids (we have kids too but never recall them screaming on a plane), rep on bus tried to con everyone into buying mosquito band, don't. Rep in hotel tried to con everyone to book the VIP lounge at the airport on return by frightening everyone with stories about a 2 hour queue on dep tax. Don't book the lounge, this is a barefaced lie, we queue for less than an hour and had plenty of time for shopping in a nice airport, not the carnage it was described as. Silly comments from reps like this give the company a bad name and also detract from all the good things he does, shame.

Overall this was a great trip. Excursions worked well, food good, hotel excellent. Not the best we have ever done, but for a 10 day hill out, this hit the spot. Plenty still to see here, so we might be back.

Holiday Nov 30- Dec 10 We had lots of fun. ACV, especially our rep at the hotel, took very good care of us. Loved the beer on the bus from the airport to hotel.

Food was fantastic - Don Pablo had the best steak. We also did Mikado, Frutos del Mar and Mediterraneo. All were great. We had the show table at Mikado. E-mail the hotel prior to your stay to book the restaurants in advance. You will need to pick up the "voucher" at guest services when you arrive. All instructions in in your check in package.

All of the staff were great, could not believe how many staff members they have. Drinks at the smaller pool bar near the Dolphins were the best.

There were lots of waves while we were there (at our section of the beach) but my boys love that so they had fun.

We are a family of 4 and kids are 15 and 13. We did have to book 2 rooms, which did bump up the price. However, it was well worth it for 2 bathrooms and everyone had their own bed. It was a connecting room so we had our own space, and I felt safe leaving the kids in their own room by keeping the connecting door open. The beds were very comfortable.

Putting a tip in the small fridge is worth it, there were extra treats and extra beer. Cold beer on the balcony at sunset tastes really good.

Only negatives were:

floors slippery when wet when the roof leaked at Mediterraneo during a downpour. We still enjoyed our meal and had a few laughs, we just shifted the table over a bit when our youngest got dripped on. Just be careful when walking on wet floors.

glass shower partition is not very practical and leaked. The maid gave us extra towels. She was great and made towel animals on our beds.

walking past building 27 was smelly, request that you are not near 27.

And last negative, I ate too much and my pants got too tight.

Coba Encounter that was offered by the hotel was fantastic. The guides could not have been better. Ladies, wear shorts while hiking and ziplining on top of your bathing suits. Harness feels better. I wear mens board shorts over my swim suit that I can swim with and keep going. Bring a snack as you don't have lunch until 3ish.

This is a large resort. We had building 30 which was far away from the main lobby and close to the dolphins. Great for us as we needed to walk off the great food. This was a very quiet area (well until the party girls above us came home from the bar). We did loose power for about 5 mins. Did not bother us as we always travel with flashlights. (usually with a few glow sticks as well, but forgot them this time).

Absolutely worst part of the holiday is listening to someone complain that he could not get beach towels at 8 am. He went on and on. Come on really, you are on vacation and don't have to cook, clean, or make your bed and you are going to complain about a towel. Stay home and get your own towel.

Well worth the money.
