“Almost perfect!”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 14, 2013

We just got back from 10 days at the Grand Bahia Principe Tulum. It is just as everyone describes...very huge complex meaning you could go to all 3 resorts, and very well run resort. At first I wasn't sure whether it was a good fit for us. We like to meet people, and it being so big, we had a hard time connecting with others. It ended up being okay. I wanted to write about some of the highlights for me which aren't mentioned very often. The water aerobics in the ocean, by the Akumal dock was so much fun and the instructors were very good. How often can you say you did aerobics in the ocean? They also had a great outdoor Taco Bar over on that side for lunch, they also had one on the Tulum side, by the quiet pool. We also enjoyed at the Tulum side, the Akumal Bar...either sitting outside with a drink before dinner, or listening to the band after dinner at 8:00. We only went to one a la carte, which was the Tortuga which had a great salad bar. We liked the buffets with a theme and wide variety every night. Rosalia was our waitress most nights and did an excellent job always with a smile. Jose, the bartender at the Tulum Beach bar was great also. These people work so hard! I really miss walking on the beach! I have a few complaints, there are no hot tubs...just jacuzzi tubs that are the same temperature as the cold pools! And since the pools are cold, no one seems to be in them...they are beautiful. It's too bad they don't heat them up a bit. This is not a complaint, but I love to swim and float and ride the waves in the ocean, and you really can't do that much here. I suggest walking on the beach up from the resort and you can do that there, by the big white hotel. All in all, this is a great place. I would recommend this to anyone who likes a big, well run, clean resort. If we ever come back to this area, I would definitely consider staying here again!

My family and i just finished a 5 day stay at the tulum resort and it was amazing!!! I have stayed at many all inclusives along the riviera maya and this one is by far the best. We booked a junior suite in the hacienda section and i highly recommend it, It's on the quieter side of the resort and you get to eat breakfast and lunch at the tequila restaurant or the main buffet your choice. The room was amazing and always tipped our maid "Nicholas" he was amazing and always cleaned it immaculately and restocked the fridge daily, Also the pool and beach in the hacienda section is nice and low key (no loud music or pool games) chairs and palapas were always available. The staff were all wonderful and the food is great at the buffets and at the a la cartes, We ate at Tequila, Mikado and Don Pablo they were all superb, If you plan on eating at any of the a la cartes (14 of them to choose from) make sure you email ahead of time to get a reservation, and when you check in be sure to go to Public Relations in the main lobby to pick up your dinner tickets. Also this resort is great for families as well as couples. Only problem is the water is very rocky so bring some water shoes, Do not even look anywhere else in Akumal or Tulum this is the resort to stay at!!!!!! Thanks again to all of the staff at the Gran Bahia Principe Tulum you made our vacation the best we've ever had!!!

Room Tip: Any room in the Hacienda section is well worth the extra money

Beach isn't great, ugly things in the water to stop the erasion, very narrow beach, the best beach is at Akumul Resort but even then it isn't the best. If you like a long beach to walk on and check out other hotels this beach differently isn't for you. Service so-so. Had to call maintenance twice because of toilet issues. Lobby bars close at eleven o'clock and then you have to take the tram to the disco. Had a great time but wouldn't go back.

Dear Sharon:

First of all thank you very much for staying in the Grand Bahia Principe Tulum Resort and taking the time to write your impressions and suggestions, to improve the service we are offering.

Concerning the beach area, the beach is public in Mexico for which the hotels can not change the natural aspects as coral, reef and rocks, located at the entrance of the beautiful Caribbean Sea and may sometimes molest people during their swimming session. In front of the Gran Bahía Príncipe Riviera Maya complex we have about 1.3km beach area where rocky areas and white sand areas alternate and give the opportunity to everybody to move freely to find the perfect spot to swim or enjoy.

Please be assured that we have shared your feedback with the rest of the team, we all took your suggestions as a learning tool and will keep working to improve our services and make sure our entire guest feel welcomed.

Best Regards

Just back from a 2 weeks vacation with my wife and a 4yrs son.
The Resort is huge and the facilities are all clean and well served with the internal transportation.
The main buffet is well organized, food always perfect. Very good service from the staff.
Another positive aspect is free wi.fi. in the lobby, even if very slow, but good enough for a quick email checking.
I had a VIP bracelet (gold), but the service wasn't for a 5star. No priority at reception; 20 min queues at Public Relations for a very important issue (after being redirect from reception) and not for a restaurant booking! Minibar in the room can be improved.
"A la carte" restaurant menu aren't at a 5star level quality (no variety for a vegetarian, and food quality good, not excellent) - I tried Spanish, Mexican and Japanese. Bad notice: in the entrees buffet in 2 restaurant I found empty courses, which is very negative.
Overall experience: good.

5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 13, 2013

Our family spent a fantastic week at the Grand Bahia Principe Tulum in March 2013. Our 3 year old's favorite activity was the brand new waterpark in the Coba section of the resort. It was easy to get there with the lobby to lobby transportation. She is too young to be left at the mini club (for 4 to 12 years old) but the friendly Judith invited me to come with her and their playground and activities were a lot of fun for us both. We went to their afternoon poolside shows and nightly mini disco every day and had so much fun with the entertainment staff, especially Guillermo who was very friendly.

My husband enjoyed the water sports activities, snorkelling and kayaking which is free for an hour per day for all guests. One day we rented bicycles, including one with a child seat and helmets for all, also free for an hour per day. My favorite activity was the yoga and zumba classes that are offered to guests for free at the beautiful Tao Wellness Centre. Dancing in a glass walled studio in the jungle with the awesome instructor Rene was fantastic.

The beach is beautiful, the pool is clean and we always felt safe. Everything was very family friendly, my daughter even enjoyed the swim up bar at Tulum where we enjoyed the service of Crisanto who served her water and was very friendly.

The food at the buffet was varied enough that we always found something delicious, fresh, healthy and exotic to eat. We preferred it to the A la carte restaurants after trying a few. The waiters for beverages were very friendly, especially when we practised our spanish with them and Pedro was our favourite at Tulum. The hostess Cinthia was very friendly with our daughter and made her feel so special! We tried the Coba and Akumal buffets also and they were very similar but we preferred the view and selection at Tulum. Again, it was very easy to get transportation from lobby to lobby and the buffets are all right in the lobby locations so we were not confined to one.

I would recommend this resort and I hope to go again. Our family had a great time and the only inconvenient we had was the cigarette smoke in the lobby which really should be banned by the direction and confined to the bars and outside.

Room Tip: The rooms close to the theatre that has mini disco at 8pm and the main show at 9pm are not suitable...

We really enjoyed daily breakfast at the Tequila Restaurant thanks to a very great waiter "Alfredo", he is so friendly & goes above & beyond to make sure the guests are satisfied.

5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 12, 2013

We just returned from a week at GBPT – our first time there. It was super. I start with a shout out to Marco the Mexican from Wisconsin the AC bus guide who got us all pumped for the start of the vacation and who earns word of he week – trafficy – as in we will be there in an our if it isn’t too trafficy. As well cudos to Sergio the AC rep who was a great resource.

The hotel has been described to bits and I have little to add except that the hotel is part of a large complex but they are well enough spaced that you do not feel it. We visited all locations (you are allowed to use the facilities in each one) and actually preferred Tulum. I also wanted to echo the sentiment that the place is constantly being kept up – gardeners, handymen, and others are all over it. The facility is pristine.

Beach: We found the best swimming just north of the boat area – it was possible to walk past the berms and into the waves which was a hoot. We snorkelled there along the berms and saw a few things. Better snorkelling up by the Akumal resort dock, we went under the ropes and over the ‘reef’ which is largely dead. Still we saw a good variety of fish.

Rooms: They are clean, well furnished, and have good AC as well as an overhead fan. The plugs are recessed into the wall (European style). The gift shop sells an adapter for $2 which makes the plug flush and then you can plug in anything. We had the smaller room safe – which I suspect most rooms do. I measured it as best I could the safe is 8” d, 10” w, and 6” high. We fit 2 Playbooks, 2 Canon SX50’s and our wallets, papers, and loose stuff in it no problem. They are mechanical lock style – they issue you a lock and key. The lock fits in the safe and the key can only be removed if it is locked. I took a lanyard from a flash drive and had it around my neck the whole trip. The showers are Euro style half door and leak on the floor constantly. We tipped maid and bar staff and always had towel art and a full minibar.

Food: I am going to say that there was always something to eat, but the buffet at most places gets repetitive and the food is slightly above canteen quality so book the a la cartes. This was our one issue, we booked as soon as we got there only to find that people had booked by email ahead of time. As a result there was a limited number of spots – usually late at night. Book by email – it is what they seem to want you to do, and it is what everyone else is doing. We did 3 restaurants in order of preference Don Pablo, Tortuga, Dolce Vita (all were good).

Excursions: We did the trip to Xel Ha. Transport was included at $79 per person it was so fantastic (separate review). We took the collectivo to Tulum, and to Akumal. We went with the Eco Centre for a guided tour at Akumal it was good, and the funds paid do good. We also took the collectivo to Playa Del Carmen. If going there – put your hotel band under your watch band or wear a tennis wrist band over it. The guys on the street there are trained in spotting them “I know you from [fill in the blank]” – it got tiresome.

Entertainment: It isn’t Broadway – but it was a lot of fun. Michael Jackson performer is a must.

Overall this was an A+ vacation. I would recommend this place to anyone. Loved it and hope to go back!

Room Tip: We were in the 2400 block - view of gardens, dolphinarium, and a peak at the ocean
