“Pleasure in Paradise”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 15, 2013

This is the place to go if you are looking for relaxation in a wonderful setting away from the hub-bub of Cancun or Riveria Maya or Playa del Carma. The Owners are gracious, warm and knowledgeable. The "Guest House" feeling is uncompromising and comforting. Close to the Beach and the Lagoon you can experience the Caribbean for all its worth. Plenty of places to dine and unwind (better if you don't have the kids). We will be back....again and again!!

I can't say enough about how comfortable we were at Casa Gatos. In fact, the week my family stayed, we joked about refusing to leave. I would imagine many guests feel this way because Dan and Dave have set things up to perfection. Everything you need is here, from kitchen appliances to beach towels to snorkeling gear. A lovely fountain and garden courtyard separate the two ‘houses’ of Casa Gatos: Dan and Dave live on the first floor of one house, and rent out their top floor (unit 100). The other building is a separate house that can be divided in 2 or rented as a whole. (I had the chance to stay in the house and later in unit #100, when we came back through the area on our way to the airport.) With all, the beds are firm but comfier than most in Mexico. Decor is eclectic and tasteful, and the rooms are light filled and serene. Air conditioning is available if it's too hot, but we preferred leaving everything open to the air. In the house, there are sunken baths and a shower on the roof ‘cactus garden’, from which you can watch the sun set or check out the wind/wave action in the bay. There's no reason to feel unsafe in Akumal (or 99% of Mexico), but if for some reason you do, the beautiful property has a locked gate. Manuela comes to clean 6 days a week and does a beautiful job.

Casa Gatos is a block or two from Halfmoon Bay, which is rocky and shallow but swimmable and is a very pleasant beach. It’s also a block from Yal-ku Lagoon, a slice of Caribbean snorkeling heaven in itself. A few restaurants are within walking distance, one of them being La Buena Vida, a terrific sand-in-your-toes hangout for lunch and dinner. Though it’s about a twenty minute walk to small shops and the Super Chomak market, and to Akumal Bay, we vastly preferred being at the end of the road where it was quiet and peaceful. Mexico is not known for its lack of noise, and PEACE was a major need for some of us, and we got it. (The occasional neighbor singing in the shower notwithstanding.) In the mornings I would rise early and walk out to the rocks and watch the waves crash, or listen to the grackles and watch ospreys, frigate birds and pelicans soar overhead.

The only caveats about Casa Gatos are these: if you have pet allergies, there are resident and visiting dogs and a cat. Wi fi is good for email and general web surfing, but if you have large files to send or heavy internet-dependent work to do, the local wireless services can be slow in peak season. And if you like sleeping later than 8:30, you’ll have to close your windows since the owners have neighbors for breakfast each morning. But sharing coffee with everyone in the courtyard is the best way to get a history of the area, tips on where to go and what to do, and know that you have caring people who really want your stay to be fabulous. These guys were prepared to make a major sacrifice for me when I left my passport in Merida. They are so sweet that I would have hated to take them up on it.

We have chosen Casa Gatos because Akumal is considered to be one of the best places for snorkeling and diving on the Mayan Riviera, and Casa Gatos is within a walking distance from both, the Yal-Ku lagoon and the seaside. Additionally, during our stay we were truly fascinated by the hospitality, kindness and helpfulness of our hosts. The rooms were clean, nice and done every day. The ritual of a joint breakfast and friendly chat of both hosts and guests in a cozy patio every morning added an extra touch to the feeling of homeyness. Summing-up, staying at Casa Gatos was a 100% satisfaction. Thank you, David and Daniel!

Room Tip: No. 103 oriented eastwards has a balcony, so the guests can enjoy wonderful sunrise. NOTE, that Casa...

Just wanted our guests to know that guests with allergies to cats or dogs are not effected. Our cats are strictly indoor cats that live only in our apartment. Our guests on arrival are asked if the they are OK with our dog being out on the plaza. If not she stays in our apartment only. Neighbors do stop by for coffee but only if it is OK with our guests. As you can see by our reviews at Casa Gatos our guests come first.
