“Amazing place”
Reviewed June 28, 2013

I would like to start this review by asking how people found fault with the food at this hotel. We have stayed at various all inclusive resorts in Europe who serve slop masquerading as food.

Anyway back to this hotel and the food. There are various options to choose from, 8 a al carte’s and buffets. The a la carte’s which we went to were very good and also the service we received there was excellent. The buffets had a great selection for breakfast (something for everyone) and a good lunchtime selection too. If you just wanted a snack, there are 2 beach bars which serve the usual burgers, hotdogs etc but would also cook you something fresh too, for example, a steak sandwich which was great for a lunchtime snack instead of having a large lunch. In our opinion, the food at this complex is very good compared to some that we have been to over the last 10 years and even if you are a fussy eater you should find something here to please you. PS. If you love meat then you will love it here especially the Brazilian a la carte.

Forgot to mention the rooms. We were in the Kentanah in block 45 and in just a standard room. We were pleasantly surprised how spacious it was with a queen sized bed (lost hubby in it) and flat screen TV. The fridge was stocked daily with water, beer and soft drinks and they have a coffee percolator which did fine for boiling water to make tea (can't function without our tea first thing in the morning). Hairdryer in bathroom was also great and worked well.

As everyone has said this place is HUGE. There are four hotels which mirror each other. On one side you have the Kantenah and the Colonial and on the other side White Sands and the Riveria and these are where the a la carte’s are, four in each section. If you are like many people who come on their yearly holiday and don’t want to go out anywhere, then this is the place for you as there is so much here to see and do and you can be as active or inactive as you wish. We spent many a happy hour on the beach looking at all the interesting animals and birds that inhabit the area. On another note, we also did the Segway’s at the hotel which was a blast. You also get to see around the hotel complex and helps get your bearings especially the first few days.

We like to get out and about to see a bit of the country we visit and this is very safe and simple at this resort as the bus stop is just outside hotel and are regularly every 10 minutes or so. We opted to go out by local bus to Tulum ruins, only $3 each on the bus and was worth going to see (take swimsuit as there is a small beach there, as you may need to cool off) went into Playa Del Carman, also $3 and did Xel-Ha on our own as just up the road. We saved approximately $30 doing it this way and could stay up until 7pm when park closed which you wouldn’t have been able to do if you were on organised excursion. Xel-Ha is brilliant if you would like to snorkel in a safe, calm environment and is also very safe for the kids too as everyone has to wear lifejackets as mandatory. Whatever you do, don’t forget to go to Akumal Beach and snorkel with the turtles. This was the highlight of our trip and all for the cost of a taxi ride. We met 6 other Brits who were also going and decided to get a taxi there which cost 400 peso’s, a little dearer than the bus but took us directly to beach and between 4 couples not a lot at all. There are supermarkets at the beach (much, much cheaper than shops in hotel) and some beach bars to get a cool beer or have something to eat. There are venders along here who will hire out snorkels for approximately £10 but only for 45 minutes, so my advice would be to bring your own (which we did, bought on ebay) or buy one when you get into the country as time limit is same at hotel and you can see so much more if you have more time on your hands to snorkel. We also did the trips with Thomson to Coba and Contoy Island and thoroughly enjoyed them too.

Back to the hotel. The only small gripe we would have is the entertainment which is more or less the same EVERY night but in a different context. Dancing. Don’t get me wrong, the entertainment team or POP as they like to known are very good dancers but come on, surely they can think up other forms of entertainment, like maybe get other people in or audience participation games. Something? Also they are on a weekly loop so if you are there for 2 weeks, tough. We ended up making our own entertainment in the Colonial Lobby with the house band and other bored Brits out for a laugh. Oh and management, please take note that when you advertise the fire show at the salt water pool please say that it starts at 10.30ish not 9 o’clock as stated as there were many disappointed children who were taken back to their rooms as it was passed their bedtime, who missed the show. We didn’t have kids with us but you could see people leaving as it was getting too late. Minor gripe.

To sum up our holiday, it was fantastic, didn’t get the time to do everything we wanted to so will be back sometime in the near future.

By the way, all your staff are great, please convey that to them as they do a great job.

Beaches, Rooms, Pool, Flora and Fauna are all amazing. It really was the most beautiful resort I have ever stayed in. The staff is extremely helpful but not bubbling with personalities. Of the four areas in this facility, the Kantenah and the Colonial appear to be the best areas. They are closest to the beach and have great pools. We were a family of four with 22 year old and 15 year old children. It really had something for everyone. If I had to find one negative, the food was only average. There were definitely enough choices to get your fill, but nothing was overly tasty. Resort is a good distance from the airport, but really nicely located near Tulum, Playa del Carmen and Xcarat (Xplor). Can't wait to go back!

We stayed in a Mayan Suite in the Kantenah Section at villa 33 for a week with three other couples from June 15 to June 22 and had a great time!!! “The Kantenah area was quiet and close to the beach. This resort is quite large but we found shortcuts over to the Colonial. For buffets, the La Hacienda and the Tikal were the places to go. We tried several different restaurants and saw many shows. Watching all the wildlife on the grounds was amazing. The pools were huge and very refreshing. What I loved the most was the salt water pool that we visited several times. Overall, this was an excellent resort!!!

My boyfriend & I just got back yesterday from two weeks away in Mexico and had a great time. We had one of the basic double rooms and can honestly say it was lovely so I can only imagine the more expensive rooms must have been outstanding. The staff were always friendly and polite. If you make an effort to speak Spanish (no matter how badly!) they are even more friendly.

The resort is huge. We were staying in Kantenah but often ventured over to Riviera and White Sands as it seemed a lot less rowdy there when you wanted a quiet evening. The spa facilities were amazing! The only thing you had to pay for were treatments but use of everything else (jacuzzi, steam room, pool etc) were all free. The food in the speciality restaurants were really nice - our faves were the Japanese, Chinese and Brazilian. (The only one I'd say was disappointing (both in terms of food and staff) was the Italian. The buffet restaurants were good, with a wide range of food most nights so you can get your fruit and veg if you'd had enough of eating junk. There is also a 24 hr beach bar located on the hotel's beautiful private white sandy beach where they serve food and drink all night.

There is enough here to keep you occupied in the hotel but we did 3 excursions, all of which picked us up from the hotel. There is also a really cheap shuttle bus (70 pesos each) which picks you up and takes you to Playa del Carmen.

Can vouch for this hotel - we had a fantastic time and would love to go again one day.

Room Tip: Ask for a king size bed if you get a standard room otherwise you will get two small doubles.

Although they are in the minority, there have been a few negative reviews of this resort; having just spent a wonderful two weeks there, my partner and I are amazed that anyone can say anything negative about this hotel. This was our first time in Mexico, and so we weren't sure what to expect. Thankfully, the Grand Palladium is a wonderful place to begin your adventures there; from the moment we arrived to the time we left, we never felt anything other than lucky to be there. The staff are friendly and efficient, the food both in the buffet and the a'la carte restaurants is always good, with the buffet also offering plenty of variety and theme nights. There are several swimming pools and a gorgeous beach you can relax by and the hotels themselves - be it the lobby, the rooms or the grounds - are clean, stylish and spacious. The four hotel lobbies mirror one another, so two of them are loud and have a band while two of them are quieter and more chilled out. In this respect, there's something for everyone. If you're an animal lover, you can spend your time looking at the flamingos, iguanas, racoons, crocodiles and other wildlife that you may find on the resort.

If you're thinking of going on any trips, some are actually very easy to do yourself, rather than have them as an actual excursion. We were able to get a bus easily to the Xel-Ha park and a taxi to Akumal; the latter provided us with the highlight of the holiday, swimming with turtles in their natural environment. However, if you'd rather stay on site, there are activities going on all the time, and if you fancy seeing more of the hotel you can take the Segway tour, albeit for a price of $35 per person. However, it's great fun and a great experience if, like us, you've never been on a Segway before.

The only suggestion - not complaint - that I have is regarding the entertainment. It was mainly dancing...and more dancing....followed by more dancing. It was very good dancing, don't get me wrong, but it got a bit repetitive after a while. Some more audience participation or variety wouldn't have gone amiss, but this is a minor issue in what certainly ranks in my top five holidays. We've already said that we'll be going back, and that's due to the amazing time we spent there. I'd recommend this hotel to anybody; you won't be disappointed.

This resort was quite large but that was part of the appeal. The jungle type grounds provided lots of privacy and remote feel and lots of opportunities for animal lovers. Food was mediocre, restaurant staff service in ala cartes wonderful. Buffet staff consistently much better in La Hacienda than Tikal. Rooms were impeccably cleaned each day, never felt sand on the floors. A/C in our room not so great, didn't work at first, had to fight language barrier to get fixed, a part was replaced but never got really cold, but was at least comfortable. Make sure you get separate pool towel cards from your room key as the staff may not believe that they forgot to give them to you, seems to be a hot button for them. The person who checked us in argued with us for quite some time about it when we did not receive ours, it was quite ridiculous, ironically we had the same person check us out and he was not so pleasant to us, I think he was still holding a grudge. This however, was the only time we thought the staff was out of line. Grounds, common areas, beaches, etc are beautiful.
