“Large and Lovely”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 23, 2013

This resort was quite large but that was part of the appeal. The jungle type grounds provided lots of privacy and remote feel and lots of opportunities for animal lovers. Food was mediocre, restaurant staff service in ala cartes wonderful. Buffet staff consistently much better in La Hacienda than Tikal. Rooms were impeccably cleaned each day, never felt sand on the floors. A/C in our room not so great, didn't work at first, had to fight language barrier to get fixed, a part was replaced but never got really cold, but was at least comfortable. Make sure you get separate pool towel cards from your room key as the staff may not believe that they forgot to give them to you, seems to be a hot button for them. The person who checked us in argued with us for quite some time about it when we did not receive ours, it was quite ridiculous, ironically we had the same person check us out and he was not so pleasant to us, I think he was still holding a grudge. This however, was the only time we thought the staff was out of line. Grounds, common areas, beaches, etc are beautiful.

what can I say, this place just gets better and better.
I called 5 days before I went as we had friends joining us from the USA and wanted to be close to them, this request was met we were put into the same block, thank you Palladium.
this was their first trip and it was great to see it through their eyes they are now looking at bringing their family on the next visit,
We are in the process of looking at dates for our 6th visit next year where we have more friend lined up lol .
They have refurbished the Kantanah the rooms are gorgeous I love the new colours and the big screen TV ( not that we watched it much ) .
We had friends staying in Playa Del Carmen who came down to see us , they got a day Pass which was 60 USA dollars each which was well worth it , they came at 9am till 6PM , they had breakfast, lunch and all the drinks they could drink ( and we had a lot lol ).

Where do i start without rambling on all day?

Arrived on the 3rd June for 2 weeks at the Kantenah section of the resort. Check in was friendly and efficient and we were in our room within 15 minutes of arrival. Very impressed by the size and layout of our room, with king size bed, mini bar, good quality television and good bathroom with constantly available hot water. Very clean and comfortable through out our stay.

Plenty to do for everyone within the resort for all ages. Activities going on all day at the main colonial pool for those feeling energetic Can be a wee bit noisy but plenty other places to spend your days if that does not suit you.. We loved the quiet pool on the kantenah side which became our spot most days. Met some great new friends while hanging out here. The beach is gorgeous as was the salt water pool. All the grounds within the resort are clean and stunningly beautiful. Wildlife is everywhere and we found very entertaining watching the variety of animals.

In the evenings there are shows in the Colonial and Riviera theaters as well as live music in all lobbies at various times. There are plenty of places to sit if you just wanted a quiet chat. Getting between the lobbies by the noddy train and golf carts. You may have to wait during busy times, however we never struggled to get to where we wanted to be.

The hotel is between Playa Del Carmen and Akumal which can be easily reached by collectivo or taxi, if you fancy getting off the property. There are also plenty day trips on offer from the agents within the resort.

A couple of things i will give special mention to.

The Spa. Stunning place with a real five star feel to it. I would highly recommend you visit it at least once during your visit.

The Staff. All of them without exception i found to be a credit to the hotel if not to Mexico itself. Always smiling, chatty and happy to assist no matter how busy they seem to be. We did tip but did not feel it was expected.

The Food. During our two week stay there was only one meal we did not enjoy which was the Mexican restaurant. All other of the themed restaurants we found to be excellent. The buffet's have a wide range of food on offer at all meal times and we always found something we enjoyed.

I would fully recommend this resort.

Room Tip: Check out the site map and request a block number to suit your needs before you go.

we were part of a wedding group from may 19-26 but we booked the extra week till june 2nd.this place is amazing.the grounds are absolutely stunning. perfectly manicured everywhere.we were in villa 41 kantenah which is a short walk to the lobby and a bit longer to the main pool or beach.the adult smaller pool was very close and is a gem.it was in a spot that was very quiet and has it`s own bar as well.we lounged mainly at the north end of the beach which was a bit less occupied and had no problems finding loungers in our favorite little area.the beach is beautiful ,but the swimming areas with no rocks are smallish but after a few days of watching people enter the water you figure out the best way to avoid the rocky areas.i grew up swimming in the caribbean but i have never seen as many fish without snorkling as we saw here....even a few stingrays. the buffets were great, especially enjoyed the breakfasts.we tryed 3 a-la-cartes and they were great as well.we had no lineups or waits as we went early 6:30 ish.this property is huge so bring your most comfortable footware, but we found it nice to walk right after eating to burn some of it off.do not miss the spa .it is a 5 star gem.had a couples massage and used all the other ammenities at no extra charge.hard to find anything to complain about but we did ask for a king in our standard but got two queens.they did give us a chance to move to a king after the first week but we decided it was too much to pack and unpack.our only other complaint would be the temperature in the a-la-cartes.they really need to turn the a/c up as we were melting, and it was hard to relax and enjoy the meal .great location right inbetween tulum and playa del carmen.we will definitely return and will be bringing another couple with us.the staff were amazing every where .there is an army of workers and they allways smiled and said hola.we took $100 us in ones and $100 us in fives and tens.that was just about perfect for 2 weeks.tip these people .they really work hard and deserve it. see you soon!!!!!! bob and dawn taplin...osoyoos b.c. canada

Room Tip: we thought we would hear road noise in villa 43,but the only thing we heard was the sweet sounds of...

How can anyone complain about this resort? It was fabulous and we’re coming back! Our family just returned from a weeklong stay June, and could not have asked for a better vacation. We would like to thank all of our fellow Trip Advisors that answered our questions and their great ideas to prepare for our adventure.

Check-In & Check-Out

First, a sincere thank you to Jennifer Vasquez. We checked in at the Colonial, which was smooth and quick, thanks to Jorge – and than relocated to the Kantenah. He explained everything in detail and made us feel at home.

Check-out was just as smooth as check-in. Be sure to turn in your towel cards, or expect to be charged – and rightfully so.

Room

We stayed at the Kantenah and the room was gorgeous. The only complaints about the room were the hard pillows and the beds sounded like thunder when you rolled over due to the plastic type covering on the pillow top. There is a lack of outlets to charge electronic devices (take an extension cord). The mini-fridge was stocked daily and the room was always cleaned in the morning. We stayed in Villa 49, which was in the middle of the lobby and Colonial/Kantenah main pool area. We would stay in this room again.

Restaurants

Ribs n’ More (Oscar our favorite waiter), Japanese, and Punta Emilia (at the beach) were our favorites in that order. We arrived at all of the A’la Carts between 6-6:30 p.m and usually seated within minutes. If you arrive later, expect to wait, but go get a drink and relax. Reservations are only required for the Japanese and Punta Emilia.

All of the breakfast, lunch and dinner buffets had large selections to choose from. It was a nice touch at the Azul Lunch Buffet, (Colonial/Kantenah Main Pool) to have fresh fish everyday cooked to order. They grilled mahi-mahi, grouper and salmon daily. Very good ice cream is served at the upper Azul Bar at the Colonial/Kantenah Main pool.

Kitchen tours are available on Wednesdays only. We would like to thank Chef Bernardo the Manager for his efficiency. This man is very dedicated to his job to provide the best food quality, and takes much pride in doing so. Sergio from the pool entertainment was our guide and interpreter.

The only disappointment was the 24-hour outdoor beach restaurant at the main pool. The food sat in the buffet chafing dishes and the waitresses would not let us order off the menu - if food was in the buffet already.

Theatres

As far as we were concerned, the shows at the two theatres were great! The first show is at the Colonial at 9:00 p.m., and the second show is at the Riviera at 10:15. You must take a shuttle immediately after the show ends at the Colonial, or walk forever to the Riviera. The cast (Fiesta Ballet) is the same for both shows, and there are 14 different shows in a seven-day period (always something different). The dancers, especially Diego, are very strong and displayed major talent at each and every show. They always brought happiness to the stage and their passion about dancing/performing was very evident.

The biggest disappointment was the Variety Show put on by the pool entertainment people – not the cast of the Fiesta Ballet! The Variety Shows had many sexual innuendos, which were clearly inappropriate for children and young adults in the audience – especially Superman! Those parts need to be taken out and replaced. It was terrible! Very bad! We and others waked out!

Although this is not Hollywood entertainment, the Fiesta Ballet is very talented and we looked forward to every evening.

Zentropia Spa

The spa is a hidden secret 18 years old and over. Recommend that you spend a few hours there – it is worth it! Small lazy river, small infinity pool and various spa amenities. Heard in a few months, the resort will impose a daily charge.

Miscellaneous

Yes, this resort is huge, but it never seemed crowded. Be prepared to walk long distances. For us, we enjoyed the long walks as it truly helped to keep our weight down with all of the food.

The Colonial lobby was the most active, and all of the lobby’s had individual entertainment. Most of which was quite good. If you want a quieter lobby to sit and relax in the evenings – than you may want to consider the Kantenah or the White Sands. The Sports bar was very loud and noisy –typical.

Transportation between the lobby’s runs fairly quickly. The only cog, may be when the shows end at the theatres.

Free Wi-Fi is available in all of the lobby’s. Anywhere else, you will have to pay. It seems that when the lobbies are crowded the Wi-Fi slows down. When families should be spending quality time together, many spend their time on the internet – sad.

Pools never seemed crowded; chairs were always available at the pools; and countless chaises at the beach. What we liked most at the main pool area, were almost unlimited straw shaded umbrella areas only one row back. With the intense sun, we were able to stay shaded and cool. This was really nice!

Before our departure from home, we signed up for the Segway at $35 per person. This was well worth the money, and gave us a tour of the entire resort. Omar was great! He explained the operations of the Segway, and with a little practice we were off and running. You need to do this early on in your vacation, to appreciate the resort.

Be sure to take the free 20-minute boat ride at the Riviera around that part of the resort – it also is worth the time.

Don’t forget the White Party at the Los Rocas pool. Get there early to get a seat. Entertainment is very good.

The beach was fabulous and ocean extremely clear – no seaweed. Fish were abundant even without snorkel gear. We personally felt that the best access into the ocean was at the Colonial/Kantenah pool - few rocks. The beach area in front of the Kantenah Villa area, was much more rockier. Just follow your fellow vacationers.

Take Pepto-Bismol (you never know). And take some bug repellant – this is an Ecological Resort. We had little problem with mosquitoes, but some guests did.

The grounds are magnificent and well maintained. All workers work very hard and a $1.00 tip goes a long way. Big Pedro and Little Pedro at the Azul Bar (Colonial/Kantenah Pool) were our favorites – but all of the bartenders are serious and work very hard. Filomena our waitress at the Azul was always friendly and prompt.

The Hemmingway Bar (reading library) is air-conditioned and serves light snacks and chocolates. Forgot his name, but an exceptional bartender.

Take Bubba Kegs and air mattresses for the pool. See Big Pedro the bartender at the pool bar, and ask for an Iceberg! He makes the best! And Relax!

We are coming back!

30.05.2013 - 13.06.13
Travelled as a couple from the UK
Room 4909 - Junior Suite - Kantenah

I won't repeat everything people have previsouly said but will give an overview under each heading of our personal experiences.

Resort
An amazing resort set within a jungle with a long beautiful beach and numerous pools. You can choose to go the the main pool which has the activities or the quieter surrounding ones An abudance of animals - coatis, agoutis, iguanas etc everywhere. Also recommend visit the salt water pool and taking some bread from the beach bar. The fish there are awesome.

Room
We were upgraded to a junior suite which had a jacuzzi bath which was fun and was very spacious. Mini bar stocked everyday and towel art left We were in Villa 49 which was an ideal position for us and could access beach, pool, restaurants easily.

Restaurants
We went to the buffet for breakfast and lunch everyday. Fantastic selection, fresh and hot.
Out of the 14 days we went to the buffet for the evening only twice. They have a theme night everynight. The remainder we went to the A la cartes. Personal favourites was El Dorado and Ribs and More, although Bamboo and Portafino were also very good. We are not big fish eaters so did not try the Japenese but had heard that was also excellent.

Entertainment
We watched 2 shows put on by the POP team - Rock Night and Pirate night. Both very high standard and entertaining.

Staff
We personally thought the staff made the resort what it was. We did not encounter any miserable staff - quite the opposite actually. Always smiling and saying 'hola'. Always being asked for drinks in lobby areas, if not already bought over, waiting staff always introducing themselves and asking if we were having a good time. The unsung staff are the cleaning/maintenance/gardeners who were endlessly cleaning and making the place spotless.

Trips
We ventured out of the resort twice - Coco Bongos and to Akumal where we swam with sea turles. We booked Coco Bongos with First Choice and I will complete a separate review but in summary it is a fantastic way to spend the evening. The atmosphere is electric. Its a club which music and cirque de soleil acts. Its hard to describe but I have to say it was one of the best nights of my life.

We took the colectivo (which is just outside the hotel) to Akumal for around 80 pescos return. I wasnt going to pay for the tour at first but after spending around 45mins in the sea to try and locate the turtles without success I paid for the tour. I am really glad I did. This was $20 or 250 pescos (which includes all the snorkle, fins, jacket etc) and they take you out over the reefs. I saw many turtles and felt really priviledge to have seen them in their natural environment.

Mosquitos
I have to warn you that we personally found the mosquitos to be quite bad. We both got bit quite a bit despite using both Jungle Formula and Johnsons 'OFF'. I really recomment you invest in some decent sprays and to use both in the day and night.

Overall we felt this resort deserves the 5* rating for the resort, quality and service and would not hesitate to visit again.

My top 2 tips:

1) If you are thinking of booking this resort or have done so I fully recommend you visit www.palladiumaddict.net. This is a website set up by a group of regular tavellers to the Grand Palladium resorts (there are several in the Carribean) and on there you can find a wealth of info including maps and there is an exellent forum where you can find out answers to all your questions. I found this invalueable before heading out there.

2) Best kept secret - the SPA. Anyone can use the spa pools and facilities even if you are not having any treatments. This area is for adults only and is by far the most tranquil area on resort. There is an infinity pool, numerous jacuzzis and hot tubs, sauna and steam room and nobody seems to know about it. We went many times and there were only about 6 maximum at any one time. I think people see SPA on the map and think that it is not available unless you book treatments and this is not the case. Plenty of chairs. I would recommend taking water/soda from your mini bar as there are no bars over there.

I am more than happy to answer any questions you have - just drop me an email.

Claire
