“Great trip to Grand Palladium”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 14, 2013

we stayed 2 weeks from 28th dec 2012 to 11th jan 2013, lovely place and excellent service from all staff, the place was spotless and stafff were forever cleaning, the only problem was the pillows on the bed, they were awfull and for what we paid for the trip i think they could supply decent pillows. We all enjoyed it especially the restaurants and being able to visit the other hotels at night, apart from the odd drunk who tended to let everyone know they knew the words to their national anthem every day we had a great time and would return.

We went to Grand Palladium Resorts – Kantenah section in December. It was amazing. We booked a Kantenah Mayan Suite and let me tell you that we will never choose anything different if we have the choice. We were in building 3604 with a view to the beach. We faced the royal beach section but we didn’t mind at all. There was always a soft music we could enjoy on our balcony and La Jarra beach bar was very close too.
The rooms are very spacious, the renovations made the room pretty and the outside shower was just superb!
Because I do a lot of research before travelling, I was well informed about the resort and I already took a look at a map of the resort. We quickly found our way arround and any shortcuts. We are not a fan of walking (or top fit) but still didn’t think the resort was “too” large. We walked from Kantenah beach to Las Rocas salt waterpool and the distance wasn’t an issue at all. Maybe also because everything is so gorgious!
The surroundings are so beautiful and well preserved, the wild life so fantastic (but stop feeding!), I only didn’t like the crocodiles surroundings, too small and not so beautiful for those crocodiles. A larger more natural location would be much better.
The train and villa carts system worked just fine. Which was great as we didn’t feel like walking to dinner and back “home” for the night. There are enough restaurants for anybody to choose from but if you are easily cold like I am, bring a light jacket to the restaurants as I found airco to be too cold for my liking. Rib’s ’n More was a favorite of mine but the buffet restaurants were also good. Good variety, not so busy and I loved the fact that I could create my own salads just the way I liked them. Sometimes we had to wait more then 90 minutes for a table in a restaurant and there were days we didn’t mind and enjoyed one of many bars or strawled by market vendors and there were days we decided on the buffet restaurants.
We ended up not seeying any show except the show provided by the bartenders at the Kantenah lobby bar. Those guys were funny and attentive!
We loved the adult pool in the Colonial section, it was our favorite!
If anyone would hesitate, DON’T. We will surely go back to this paradise.
Oh and just to add something besides the resort… go to Akumal if you like to try snorkeling. You can take the collectivo and just go in the water by yourself, you’ll see a lot of turtles, this was unbelievable and fantastic!

Room Tip: Kantenah section is quieter, mayan suite has great location to the beach and shortcuts to the lobby.

My husband and I spent two weeks at the Grand Palladium Resort in the Riviera Maya in December 2012 and our room was in the Kantenah Resort. We absolutely loved the beach that spanned a great distance and the service was top notch! Staff were very friendly and we were able to transfer from one room with two doubles to a room with a king size bed within two hours.

The staff were very friendly and we met one very special girl in the buffet restaurant that went the extra mile for us - thank you, Neydy! Alfredo, our lobby bartender - you are fabulous! You made our time there more special!

We visited the Zentropia spa and it was the best spa we've been to in the three resorts we've stayed at the Riviera Maya! We laid in the sun after our massages and enjoyed the cold pool for a 1/2 day of total relaxation which added to our experience.

The one thing that would have helped us get things fixed in our room (toilet seat and leaking shower door) would be to let us know about the maintenance slip you can put on your door to get things fixed. The resort should be proactive in ensuring the small things are taken care of as well.

The resort layout was superb, and we are able to easily get around. We were very impressed with the fact that they utilized 20 percent of the land for the resort while maintaining 80% for the natural environment. We had a tour of the Royal Suites Yucutan and were given a 90-minute presentation on the Palladium Travel Club.

We joined the Palladium Travel Club buying a small package to use in the next two years and our next trip will be to the Grand Palladium in Punta Cana, Dominican Republic in 2014. We will return to the Grand Palladium in the Riviera Maya following that trip!

Room Tip: The Kantenah resort has the most beautiful part of the beach so if you're a beach person stay in...

This hotel is fantastic, it has a beachfront setting, tropical gardens and a dining scene that’s second to none – it’s easy to see why the Grand Palladium Kantenah Resort and Spa has clocked up five stars. The complex includes 4 Hotels (plus the Royal Suites) and you can therefore use all the amenities, i.e. swimming pools and restuarants for the whole complex.(excluding the Royal Suites). The staff are very friendly and harworking and nothing seems too much trouble.

We stayed there for 2 weeks in December last year on an 'all inclusive' basis and had a great time. The room we stayed was in Block 48 in the Kantenth complex and was spacious and tastefully furnished, with flat screen tv and a whirlpool bath.

It is set on a curve of white sand, the property is cocooned by greenery and spread out between tropical gardens, so the grounds feel private and peaceful. The grounds also include, and this needs to be seen to be believed, 2 enclosed crocodile sections!! There is also 2 Flamingo lakes and other numerous animals (i.e. racoons and a meercat type species!) who appear from time to time.

Relaxing is easy here. You’ll find 7 swimming pools including 1 saltwater & 2 adult-only, some of which feature luxurious extras like built-in whirlpool baths and a swim-up bar.

The hotel’s dining scene is worthy of its 5-star status. You’ve have five buffet restaurants and eight speciality restaurants to choose from and one of the plus points is you can use the speciality restaurants as many times as you wish, for example in our 2 week stay we only used the buffet restuarants for breakfast. The speciality à la carte options offer the likes of Steakhouse, Ribs, Italian, Asian, Japanese and Mexican fare. For after dinner drinks, you’ve got at least 14 bars to pick from. The is also Free Wi-Fi in all the hotel's reception areas.

On the Trips front, although not cheap at US$150 each, Swimming with Dolphins is a must, although personally we did not buy the CD or photos as they wanted an extra US$238 for the photo package.

Overall an excellent Hotel & Holiday which we would highly recommend and will hopefully be returning shortly!!!

Room Tip: If you like quieter type rooms the area around Kantenah blocks 45 to 49 is very good

We visited Grand Palladium for the third time, this time with a great stay at Kantenah over the Xmas break. The Kantenah suites might be the hidden gem in the resort (along with Las Rocas salt water pool area). The service everywhere was friendly and very good, including warm hellos with the beach and grounds staff. The resort is well kept and clean, food is excellent everywhere, bars are plentiful and there is a nice mix of beach and pools.

The resort is very vast, nicely laid out and beautifully maintained. It is split into four more or less contiguous resorts: the Kantenah, Colonial, White Sands and Riviera. It is worth noting that some amenities are available only to those staying in the 'Royal Suites.'

Getting around the resort (from Kantenah / Colonial to White Sands or Riviera, for example) can be done by foot, which is time consuming and grueling or by trolley cart systems dressed up like trains. The 'train' stops were dispersed through the resort and the 'train' service was frequent. The Kantenah and Colonial complexes are near to one another. The White Sands and Riviera complexes are close to one another. The sports complex and spa are about mid way.

The beach is nicest at the Kantenah end. There are rocky parts elsewhere but the water is still very nice. The area of the beach that is easily swim-able and un-rocky is available to all of the resorts. Unsurprisingly, getting beach chairs at that end of the beach requires some planning. The beach is maintained by staff in the morning and is fine sand that is pretty clean. There was a lot of seaweed and plant debris in the water during our stay. We were not sure if that was a year-round problem but it was a bit of a nuisance. The strength of waves varied but waves were at times strong enough for adults to body surf.

The resort-offered water sports were centrally located but some items were more prevalent than others. Kayaks were hard to come by with a total of three or four working at the time (several broken) for the entire complex. Private water sports such as para-sailing and jet-skis were also easily accessible.

The beach has several bars and staff are friendly. Some meals and drinks are available only to 'Royal Suites' and 'Club' members. One beach bar served food late and service was a bit slow but, for late night eating, it did the trick. All bars had Sol beer on tap. Some bars also had Dos Equis dark beer on tap. The selection of normal alcohol was fine with some higher-end brands available to 'Royal Suites' and 'Club' guests.

The rooms were spacious and updated in our area of the Kantenah (three separate rooms). Room service was efficient and effective, consistent with other quality resorts we've stayed at. Mini bars contained 4 bottles of water, an assortment of soft drinks as well as 2 Sol beer and 2 Superior dark beer, all in bottles. The mini bar was replenished daily but we at times had to ask for the water to be topped up.

Boardwalks and pathways connect various parts of the complexes. Some of the boardwalks were a bit rickety and were being gnawed on nightly by local wildlife making them progressively more rickety. The boardwalks and covered pathways added to the ambiance of the resort.

Coatis, raccoons and large rat-like animals were present. They were a bit of a nuisance when tourists fed them but the animals were otherwise friendly and novel. Flamingos and other wildlife were displayed elsewhere at the resort. The usual iguana and lizard population was around. Overall the wildlife added additional excitement.

One chief complaint is that the pools are exceptionally deep in most parts (1.6 m / 5'2") making it difficult to play sports standing with feet flat. Getting to the main swim up bar requires a swim. On one hand, this keeps the pool bar from being too crowded but seriously limits seating and accessibility. It is also difficult to swim off with a drink. The pools would have been more fun for casual vacation water sports if they were somewhat shallower.

The restaurants were unique and attention was given to details. Our party dined at the Japanese, Mexican, Steak and Rodizio (Brazilian BBQ) restaurants. Our party favored the Rodizio and Steak restaurants but didn't have any bad experiences. Our least favorite was the Japanese restaurant but partly on account of how good our favorites were.

The buffet restaurant meals were very good and the selections varied sufficiently day to day. The Mexican selections were a hit with our party. Wait times for tables at the buffet restaurants were short and service was pleasant and generally efficient. The food quality and service between buffet restaurants was consistent. The coffee and espresso service quality varied widely. The brewed coffee was very weak leaving us craving a strong, delicious coffee. The espresso quality varied but was quite good when it was good.

Getting tables at restaurants was tricky. Only two restaurants take reservations and it seemed that the reservations had to be made a day in advance and couldn't be made at the Kantenah or Colonial lobbies necessitating a trip across town. We didn't end up accessing any reservation restaurants. Instead, the staff at non-reservation restaurants accommodated groups of any size on a first-come, first-served basis. Wait times varied but ranged from several minutes to over an hour. At a vacation pace, this was hardly a problem. A wireless alert system was sometimes given out so that people could enjoy the lobby bars while waiting--A nice touch. Wait times to dine were shortest right at 5:30 when restaurants opened. Each night, a different restaurant was 'adults only.' This seemed to cut down wait times even though adults were primarily frequenting the restaurants on most nights in any case.

There are plenty of places to drink in the lobby area. The sports bar was a hit with our family. It had foosball, pool and ping pong tables that were free to use and generally accessible. The sports bar also had a late night grill but the menu became more restricted at later hours, ultimately getting down to one or two selections.

In evenings, live musicians were stationed in the lobbies with bars adjacent. Bartenders were efficient and pleasant as were waitresses. In Kantenah there are two other bars, Churchill's and Hemingway's. Both bars lack the ambiance that their names conjure but are each good group bars. Hemingway's caters to smokers but all outdoor and covered areas seem to allow smoking as well. Lobby bars tended to be busiest at the Riviera end and less busy at Colonial, less busy yet at Kantenah, meaning there was a pace for everyone's taste.

The night club was well laid out and a good size. Unfortunately, the crowd at the night club varied widely during our stay. When it was packed it was a really good time with the resort staff enhancing the party in a number of ways (dancing on stage, hosting, handing out party-themed articles, etc.). When it was empty, it was truly empty. Not sure why that was but it would have been nice if the club was busy on more nights during our stay.

The sports facilities were in good repair and straightforward to access. Basketball, tennis, soccer and shuffleboard were all good. The mini golf course was in a bit of disrepair and was frustratingly repetitive. Out party became deeply bored after about 4 mini golf holes. The spa and gym facilities were nice. The gym equipment is what one would expect at such a resort: older but surely functional.

In general, the hotel staff made strong attempts to speak English but like most resorts, English skill varied widely. Some rudimentary vacation Spanish, at the least, is recommended. We didn't encounter any blatant or rude attempts by staff to obtain tips but staff were appreciative of tips.

The vastness of the complex makes it a fun destination for active families. There is so much to choose from and explore that it can feel overwhelming. Compared to the feeling of being trapped at an all inclusive, this property is a refreshing change. it is particularly good for families and groups of friends.

Our party would return and recommend the resort to others!

Room Tip: Buildings 50 and 51 are nicely located between the beach and the lobbies for Kantenah and Colonial.

The facility is beautiful, clean, beach is lovely and very well kept. Free wet spa at the sports field was a nice surprise. We played a great game of soccer on a full size turf field. Rooms very nice. This hotel does not have an a la carte restaurant. The affiliate hotels, Colonial has one and White Sands has a few. We do not have priority when trying to reserve (The "Royal" guests have first priority and White Sands guests have second.) We would have to get up early (in line for 8:00 AM at the White Sands) to reserve dinner for the following night, and only because we were 19 were we accepted at the "non reserving" a la carte restaurants. Highlight of the a la carte restaurants was Manuel...the wine semellier. Once he explained the process, we let him know what wine we wanted, at what restaurant, for what time, it was all magincally taken care of. Service was provided at 2 ends of the spectrum, either exceptional of very average. New Year's Eve was a blast, we had loads of fun, a great vacation overall!

Room Tip: We stayed in a junior suite 4916. 3rd floor very nice. I beleive 50 or 51 would be closer to the m...
