Myself and my two daughters (19 & 21) spent two weeks at the Grand Palladium Colonial in August and had an amazing time.

I want to start by saying this was the best holiday we have ever had. We have been to 5 other all inclusive hotels, this being our 3rd time in the Caribbean and 2nd time in Mexico. We stayed at the Grand at Moon Palace for our first visit and although it wowed us, we preferred Grand Palladium and will definitely return here over any other hotel we have visited.

The grounds are beautiful with lots of things to do regardless of your age. The wildlife was absolutely fabulous - flamingos, crocodiles, SO many coati, raccoons, lizards and birds! We also took a boat ride around the hotel which was beautiful. Although there was a train and buggies for transport we enjoyed walking and our villa was ideally located between the lobbies and the pools. The beach was nice but the seaweed is a problem as expected in the Caribbean at the minute but we enjoyed walking along the beach on cloudy mornings - the hotel worked hard to keep it clean.

We sat around various pools (Colonial, White Sand, Adults only) but we preferred the White Sand Pool as it was shallower (we could only stand up in small parts of the Colonial pool). The activity staff were excellent (Andrea and Igor from White Sands made our holiday). We participated in water balloon throwing competitions, bingo, Aqua bikes, foam party, hamster ball across the pool, t-shirt design and table tennis. There was also cooking demonstrations and tequila tasting providing things to do for both children and adults. We played mini golf but got bit because it was in dense jungle so avoided this area. My youngster daughter also played football on the astro pitches every night - there was an adults/teen match and a children's match so everyone could get involved. On an evening we tended to miss the shows as we were eating but we attended the Casino night and after show parties both at the beach and Colonial lobby which were all excellent!

We found the staff welcoming and friendly. Our hairdryer broke and shower head kept slipping down but upon ringing reception they sent someone out immediately to deal with it. Although the rooms were basic, we didn't mind as we never spent much time there. The maids kindly made up our sofa bed with being 3 adults and my eldest daughter said it was very comfortable.

In terms of restaurants, we only ate at the Hacienda buffet for breakfast. Service was good and you didn't have to wait long to be seated. Lunch time we either ate at the beach bar or at the White Sand pool there was a BBQ. My daughter only ordered room service once and said it was very good. On the evenings we always ate at the a la cartes which was a big attraction for us to this hotel as we like to avoid buffets - unlimited and reservation free (except the Japanese and fish restaurant) was fabulous. Although occasionally there was a wait time of 40 minutes, generally we were seated quicker than stated and we enjoyed just having a drink whilst waiting. Below is our opinion of the a la cartes we tried:

- Japanese (reservation required):
This was by far our favourite restaurant and we visited 3 times. Service was excellent each time, a great show and by far the best Teppanyaki we have ever tasted.

- Brazilian:
We have mixed reviews. Our first visit was excellent - brilliant service and good with a variety of choices. However our second visit was a little disappointing, the service was lacking with our waiter forgetting about us and they also ran out of meat resulting in only 3 meats continuously circulating.

- Mexican:
We visited this restaurant 3 times and although not particularly spicy it was extremely tasty. The service was sometimes slow but it didn't bother us too much as we were never in a rush.

- Italian:
The pasta dishes are excellent, the pizza okay. Service was very good each time. However, do not ask for garlic bread - they brought my daughter out a cold bread bun with garlic butter (not warm) in the middle, essentially a sandwich.

- Steakhouse:
We were disappointed by our experience but other people we spoke to enjoyed theirs so it may have been an off night. Our steaks were chewy, the side sauce was limited and there was no option for French fries. It felt more like food served at lunch in the buffets than an al carte.

- Ribs and More:
This restaurant was excellent - the food was superb and service was very good.

- BBQ on the beach:
This you had to reserve but was free, however we were disappointed. There was more buffet than BBQ and not much of an atmosphere, it reminded us of lunch and not a luxury night which we believed it to be. We wouldn't do this again if we returned.

During our visit we also went to Chic cabaret at the adjacent TRS Yucatan resort. It was 90 dollars each and was absolutely fantastic. We did this instead of Coco Bongos which Thomas Cook had stopped due to a shooting that occurred outside just before our trip. WE WERE NOT DISAPPOINTED! We arrived at 7.15pm and received a welcome drink and sat on the terrace. At 7.30pm there was a pre show and at 8.00pm the doors opened. The show consisted of musicals, pop songs, rock, acrobats and was fantastic. All night we were lathered with drinks and alongside the show there was a 8 course meal which included fancy shot drinks in-between courses. Although the food was a little posh for my daughters they still really enjoyed the majority of the food. Overall the show and food were BRILLIANT and we 100% RECOMMEND doing this!

We also spent half a day at the Spa (we received a good deal from the people who came around the pool). We all had a 80 minute massage and it was really nice as we were all in the same room. We then spent time using all of the facilities. It was a really enjoyable experience and worth the money. There was a healthy snack and drink bar which was a really nice feature.

OVERALL - THIS HOTEL IS ABSOLUTELY FANTASTIC, although service in some of the a la carte could improve. STAFF ARE VERY FRIENDLY AND THERE ARE LOTS OF OPTIONS FOR FOOD, DRINKS AND ACTIVITIES FOR ALL AGES - WE WILL DEFINITELY BE RETURNING!

The following is based on my personal experience and please keep in mind that some of the issues I mention below may not be issues for everyone.
I had higher expectations than most travelers may have had as we had visited the Grand Palladium Jamaica prior to visiting this resort (which was fantastic!)

Pros: shuttle service drivers were
amazing and friendly.
Morning and lunch buffets had
great variety and there were
tons of options.
À la carte restos( poseidon,
chang thaï and El dorado) were
fantastic and provided a
complete culinary experience
from the food to the service to
the overall ambiance of the
restos.
Evening shows in the
theatre (quality of the
shows and performances were top
notch).
Afternoon live bands were
great.
Beach was nice.
Housekeeping amazing.
Spa was an incredible
experience.

Cons: •evening buffets were very
basic. Small with not much
variety. The breakfast and
lunch buffets were better.
•Evening live bands(not at all
at the standard of the evening
shows at the theatre)
•Upselling of wine bottles in
the a la carte restaurants.
Some restos were very
pushy in trying to make
you buy a bottle of wine. It
made for an uncomfortable
experience having to say no.
•Hemingway; could be a charming
area but I agree with other
reviews that it looks dated and
it lacks a lively atmosphere.
•After parties: my biggest
issue of the whole trip.
If you are not into
line dancing, the parties were
duds. It felt like a party for
the entertainment team
and we were just bystanders
watching. I was especially
disappointed with the white
party. It was moved to the
small area of the lobby due to
rain which I understand is not
their fault. However, work with
the space you have! The
Kantenah side is dead at night.
We could've had a huge party
there with a dj that would've
made up for the fact that we
couldn't be on the beach.
•No nightclub; they could
easily put a dj in the
sports bar for those who really
want to dance to current hits.
I suppose they do this to
promote their Chic
entertainment experience... For
$100 each.

This resort seems to try to upsell everything, wine, rooms, spa.
Even though we went to the spa for a treatment, they were still bothering us to book a second day.
Please tell the guys in the turquoise shirts to stop following the guests trying to upsell the rooms TO TRS.

Overall a nice week off of work, but not the vacation we were expecting.

If the management team replies to this review, I would appreciate a bit more feedback on my nighttime entertainment comments. If this could be improved, I would definitely return.

Ignore all bad reviews. We are currently on a 2 week holiday from 09/09/19 and cannot fault it at all. Check in we easy and quick. Luggage taken to rooms on golf buggies. Staff are so friendly and always acknowledge we a smile and a hello nothing is too much trouble.

World like to say Gessica is absolutely amazing she is so friendly and always looks to find you and give you a wave anc a hello around the pool and she knows exactly what drinks you want by the pool. She is a credit to your staff and makes the visit so much better.

If you do any excursions it has to be coco bongo (see Oscar around main pool) we done royal price $145 dollars but well worth the money that is transfer entry with no queuing box and tables waiter service abc bottles of drink (all good stuff) we had Belvedere vodka. Captain Morgan’s spice rum and tanquiri gin. If you finish a bottle they give you another. Shows were absolutely fantastic, best nite ever.

This is our second stay at the GP in Rivera maya and overall it’s a great time. The staff is super friendly and the food is top notch at every restaurant. We booked it through book it.com and it was the easiest experience ever! The best guy ever that works there is Hugo with BD travel. This young man really enjoys his job and is super professional. And he speaks really good English too. He made our stay here much more enjoyable. The reason for the four stars instead of five is the room. When we got here the bedsheets were very dirty. We arrived around 3 pm but we didn’t check the sheets until about midnight. Although they were very quick on changing our rooms it still took about an hour and we were tired by then. But we did get a new room with new sheets. However the bathroom has mold on the walls. Now this is an older resort and yes they are doing some remodeling but if you want one of those rooms it’s going to cost alit more money. Overall it’s a great time with great pools and beaches. Some of the women on the beach like to go topless so if that offends you just stay clear of them and remember that you are in Mexico with a lot of Europeans that stay here. And also, what happens in Mexico ends up on Facebook .... enjoy !!

After previously going to grand palladium in Jamaica we couldn't wait to see what it's sister hotel in Mexico was like.
The pool looked great however we were both annoyed by the fact that people are allowed to smoke in the pool by the swim up bar! Only ever 2 staff working in the pool bar which meant you could be sitting in a smoke filled area for a while to get served.
Beach is lovely and now a lot of the seaweed has gone it was good Snorkeling.
The rooms are far from being 5 star, they might have been 10 years ago but the room we were in was old and tatty, as you entered the room all you could smell a strange odour damp.
Tiles in the bathroom were old and many had been badly repaired, bathroom mirror had got lots of block spots were the reflective material had worn away.
Bathroom door lock broke on one occasion and we couldn't get into bathroom, called maintenance out who eventually fixed it.

Loads of live music from different bands every day. Only really annoying thing with the music is when the live bands play the hotel leave the outdoor speakers playing so if your sat on a sunlounger trying to relax all you can hear is two different types of music playing.

Our first weekend there and the hotel was turned into a teen party house, 250 Spanish students out on the piss. They kept us and many of the guests awake several nights in a row, hotel staff didn't try to quieten them down, they just kept serving them.

To use the WiFi you randomly get asked to fill in a short survey and at the end you are asked if you would like the hotel to contact you, which I said yes to and never heard back.

Dr sanchez the hotels Dr was fantastic after an incident were we found glass in our food at one of the restaurants she was the only one who took the incident seriously.

If you want a lie in and put your do not disturb sign up, the staff won't turn up at your room later in the day to sort it out.
There is tea and coffee in the room but this didnt get replenished on a daily basis, several times I had to try and source my own tea and coffee.
Fridge is well stocked everyday.
For an all inclusive hotel it's surprisingly difficult to get cold bottled water from anywhere without paying for it. Room only gets 4 litres per day!
Hotel drivers are brilliant and the grounds keepers are always pleasant and helpful.

Staff in la hacienda can take a very long time to get you seated, if we wanted buffet then we used the beach bar there the staff were always helpful.

Whirlpool in the room is excessively noisey, in Jamaica you got a full whirlpool in your room which was great for me and the wife, in riviera meya it's a small bath with jets that are incredibly loud, not very relaxing.
Its also quite a high bath so it can be awkward to get into to have a bath or shower if your not fully able bodied.

Really felt let down by grand palladium riviera meya, think you could do with taking your staff over to the Jamaica palladium and learn from them.
