“Fantastic experience......”
Reviewed February 19, 2013

We spent 3 weeks here January/February 2013 ; I have been putting off writing this review as it's difficult to put in print everything we want to convey;however here are our main points from this HUGE complex ; TIP Hold on to the Map you are given on arrival !! We were still finding short cuts,or taking wrong turns at the end of two weeks :-) You can take a land train or a buggy, but as walking outside the Hotel is dangerous because of the very busy main road, walking around the grounds is both safe and pleasurable, ( If you do go outside the Hotel grounds to get a local bus,(Collectivo-reliable and cheap)ensure to use the underground tunnel to cross the Road).
As with other guests we were staying at the Colonial and found this very busy/noisy, but as using facilities in the other areas was not a problem, it didn't bother us, and in fact found the experience of using the different areas at varying times very enjoyable.
Bonus if you need it - FREE WiFi throughout.
Hotel Grounds - WONDERFUL. Well maintained and as its in a jungle/mango grove area the wild life, flora and forna are a delight to walk through. The "wild life" were especially entertaining!
Rooms - we were in Block 5;Room 1528. Although a good central location, this is a dingy room, as it is set back so minimum sunlight. The room was adequate but tired. Mini bar(beer, mixers and waters)replenished daily. Coffee machine. Iron&Ironing board. On talking to other visitors from the UK, we found that no matter which rooms/blocks(including Junior Suites), all had a problem with noisy neighbours at some point. (Luggage being bumped up and down stairs, children running up and down, people coming in&out during the early hours) as any sound echoed around the buildings. Our room was kept clean/well serviced. The bed was HUGE, comfy with good pillows, and a big plus FREE safe in the room.
Pool Areas - Something for everyone. The main pools have entertainment and the "swim up" bars, but the Salt water pool(sunbeds not as comfy as elsewhere and if you want one of the four poster type,be early), or the Adult only pools, are quieter but still have a bar and towel exchange. We used the "Secret Pool/Bar" area on most days. A good bar man and the area was kept clean/tidy at all times.
Beach - Lots of sunbeds both in shade or sunshine. Colonial area the busiest, but a short walk up towards another resort (El Dorado)and the area is much quieter, but still with access to bar/w.c. ( This is also the direction where the Turtle nesting site can be found).
Spa - A must to experience. Lovely setting, with excellent facilities( as well as using the area on a sunny day we used this area one day when it was raining, therefore it was very busy and loungers under cover are limited). No bar in this area but plenty of juices and iced water.
Food - We used all the A la Carte restaurants and buffets available to us. It is nice to be waited on at table now and again, but we prefer the choice from buffets which were EXCELLENT. Breakfast(as with all meals) was a vast choice. There were hot cooked options, cereals, continental, fruits. smoothies alongside the option to have smoked salmon & Cava(they call it Champagne)! We usually ate about 730 a.m. and found this to be just before it got too busy.
Lunch and Dinner had fresh Pasta and Pizza stations. Starting with the basic choice, cooked fresh - you can then add as many other ingredients as you want to, making the dish your own! Always a carvery, good choice of meats, fish, vegetables ; excellent salad bar and choice of sweets( including a fresh crepe station)/fruits/cheeses to finish. (Service of drinks/iced water is ongoing throughout your meal).
Entertainment - The shows are based in theatre areas at the Colonial and Riviera. The style of entertainment wasn't for us, but very popular and busy every evening. We chose to sit in the quieter lobby areas ( Kantenah or White Sands) or use the Adult Bar "Hemingways" which had piano music 3 times a week.( Excellent barman : Mel.who was pleasant, efficient and made excellent cocktails). There is also an Adult bar next door "Churchill" which caters for smokers.
Finally a few Tips ; Don't use a Tour Operator to Swim with Turtles at Akumel, or Playa del Carmen. Very easy to do yourself by Collectivo from outside the Hotel and MUCH cheaper.
Use Playa del Carmen for shopping - 5th Avenue has a wide range of designer shops as well as large souvenir stores( a lovely beach area and plenty of bars/cafes to use). Here is also where the Ferry service is to Consumel.
Depending on the time of year you are travelling you may need an umbrella. We took one and waterproof ponchos from home, which came in very useful, as although there are covered walkways around the complex, there are times when there is no shelter.
BEWARE your "free gift" or free tour of the complex ( to include a look at the Royal Suites) - It is time share. ( It is interesting to note that guests of the Royal Suites were more often than not to be seen using all the facilities/buffets/restaurants around the main complex).
Queuing in the morning at the Customer Service desk from 715 a.m. ( the desk is not manned until 8 a.m.) if you want to make a reservation at the A la Carte restaurants is not necessary, unless you want to book a show table at the Japanese restaurant.
Overall a fantastic experience/holiday and one of the best All-inclusive we have been to for choice and service.

Room Tip: Read the reviews from Trip Advisor to help make an informed choice. It is a huge complex to choose f...

We stayed for a week in the Colonial, while the location and quality of these rooms is nice, we found that we spent more time at the White Sands/Riviera section of the resort.
We found that the Colonial was much busier, crowded and noisy so next time we will actually stay at the other section, quieter, less noisy!
Ernesto at the adult pool in the White Sands area was great. I had read about his service on here before and now I know why, he is so friendly, works hard at serving everyone at the pool with a smile for all!
At times we found some of the service to be very slow, especially the bar in the Colonial.
This resort is Huge! Thank goodness for the trolley service as my companion has hip problems and found it hard to walk any great length. All in all a wonderful vacation, great resort, fabulous food and nice warm weather! We will be back soon!

We stayed at the Colonial for two weeks over Christmas and New Year.
It is a lovely hotel, the fact you have so many restaurants and bars to choose from makes you feel like you are going out every night.we only ate in the buffet 3 times of an evening.
It is a large complex but we found it jsut as easy to walk from one lobby to another rather then getting the train.
They have an amazing spa which you can use even if you don;t have any treatments. We had the couples massage which was lovely.
We used the adults pool most of the time which was nice and clean the staff all around the complex we found helpful and pleasant.
I would go back here it was a lovely relaxing holiday in lovely surroundings.

My wife and I stayed at the Colonial for two weeks ending in early February.Overall we had a good time but there were a few areas where this hotel came up short
Two hours and 40 minutes after our plane touched down we were at the check in counter. So far so good!Unfortunately our room request was exactly the opposite of what we asked for.We asked for a quiet room on the second floor close to the beach as we go to bed very early. We got first floor in an entranceway close to the lobby. We were woke up regularly as the hallways echo and every little sound can be heard(It was very noisy). We asked for king beds and got 2 doubles. Two of us northern folks just dont fit into a double bed so my wife and I spent our 25th wedding anniversary sleeping in seperate beds.We tried twice for a room change but there were none available. No respectable hotel should have rooms with double beds.
We did not have any issues withthe room itself other than the noise.Despite previous reviews that stated the decor was dated,we liked it.The beds were comfortable as were the pillows. The air conditioning worked well ,we had good water pressure and plenty of hot water. The maids did a fair job every day.For some reason though the grounds workers used the bushes outside our room to urinate .I guess they could not see us sitting on the balcony but this was a regular occurence.
There are literally millions of loungers on the beach and at the pools. On the nicer days they will mostly be taken by 9am.There is no problem getting shade or sun anywhere. The nicest part of the beach is the Kentanna side.Nice white sand and no water shoes needed to walk into the water.Only about 30% of the beach however is swimmable and the rest is rock and coral. We had some good days of snorkelling. The pools are beautiful. The water was a bit cold but it warmed up toward the end of our vacation. You have access to two adult pools if you want peace and quiet....very nice .If you want more action hang around the main pools as there are lots of daily activities.
The entertainment was quite good. The evening shows start at 9pm and last about an hour. Its mostly lip synching and dancing in a wide variety of costumes.Well worth seeing. The unfortunate part was they had the same shows the first week as they had the second week so we had nothing to do our second week. Also you will find a variety of musicians in the lobbies in the evenings. Some were quite entertaining. If you catch the tail end of one show there is a good chance the same show will start in one of the other lobbies later in the evening. We enjoyed sitting in the Colonial lobby in the evening watching the entertainment and Lucy and Maria will work their tails off to keep your drinks filled so you dont have to get up and do it yourself
One of our biggest disappointments was with the food.It was either cold or bland and repeats a bit too much.Generally we would always eat at the snack bar on the beach while on vacation.there are two such restaurants here to choose from. The problem is the food is cooked hours in advance then kept warm in steam trays.the fries are cold and dried out.So we ordered off the menu and our chicken wings and onion rings came out 5 minutes later ice cold. This happenned every time we tried to eat here.Im sure the food would be good if they could serve it to us hot.You can also get lunch at the outdoor buffet area.It has a limited selection and had some of the same temperature issues. The pizza was bland and boring as was the pasta station. You could however make a good garden salad and if you hit it right the carving station was good. One day they had ribs then whole chickens and pork loin.If you can get the potatoe wedges hot they are good too.the indoor buffet doesnt start until 1pm so it was a bit late for us but found it to be pretty good for lunches.the breakfast was much the same as we have seen elsewhere.I did enjoy the smoked salmon for breakfast ,toasted in a sandwich with swiss cheese. We found the evening buffet very poor. All meats in steam trays and no carving station. It was hard to find plain fresh vegetables that werent in a stew or concoction of some sort.We really struggled here to find enough to eat other than Gala night. They have a beach bbq on Wednesdays and Fridays. There you will be seated at the beach and enjoy numerous barbecued meats and a variety of salads. We were glad we tried it once but it wasnt good enough to go a second time. The a la cartes were hit and miss.We tried them all and only enjoyed 3 of them The Brazillian was the best where they bring meat perfectly cooked on swords around to your table. It was tasty and the service was good.We ate at the steak house three times. The steaks are tasty and tender but our meal was hot only once.Ribs and More was the other restaurant we enjoyed although I found the mahi mahi to be bland. The mexican was truly the worst and everyone we talked to agreed. We tried the other restaurants and despite a nice presentation found the food boring and tasteless.
Overall despite some negatives I would go back to the Colonial for a 1 week vacation if the price was right but I doubt we would go for two weeks again

Just had a week in Paradise aka Kantenah in a Junior Suite!! Hotel was full, with 4000 guests, but it's so spacious you wouldn't have thought so. Hotel, grounds, pool, restaurants all immaculate. Staff friendly & helpful. Food: more than enough choices in the numerous buffets, snack bars & restaurants. This is a BIG resort ie more to it than you initially think & you need to explore it, either on foot or via the golfcarts or mini train, to see all the facilities, restaurants etc.
As it's close to the jungle the wildlife is amazing. Went swimming with sea turtles-felt like something out of Finding Nemo.
The beach is like a Bounty ad-sand like icing sugar & palm trees.

As other people have said, the only downside is the Canadians! Loud, brash, rude (especially to the staff) & drunk! Thought it was only the British who were the drunks abroad, but they're worse!
But don't let that put you off! we're already planning to go back next winter!

Room Tip: Lots of trees, so rooms on the higher floors may have a clearer view. We were on the ground floor, b...

My husband and I booked a one week stay at the Colonial for February 5-12 with our two children, ages 9 and 11. We had visited the Riviera side five years ago and stayed in block 68 (the southernmost block to be had on the resort and ages away from everything). This trip, we decided we wanted to be centrally located and picked the Colonial as it was close to the pool we liked and the Kids’ Club. Unfortunately, our children were at the in between ages where neither wanted to go to the Kids’ Club, so that won’t be included in my review.
RECEPTION: Upon arrival, we were not greeted with the usual cold beverage or hearty welcome. It was straight to the desk for check-in, where we waited and waited. I was less than impressed upon first impression of the Colonial. We asked to upgrade to a Colonial Suite and were refused. The reasoning was that the rooms were for six people. We were willing to pay to upgrade and they still refused until they finally said nothing was available. We were given documents and a large packet of information that included a map, information on sports and entertainment programs, restaurants, in room safe information and mini-bar information. We were then transferred via golf cart to our room by a porter and our luggage went with us.
ROOM: Okay, so this is where things were rough for us. We originally booked the Colonial. Upon arrival to room 2104, it was NOTHING like what we expected. The bedding was worn. The sofa bed was old….and broken. The springs weren’t attached at the end of the bed even though the bed was made up, so when I sat on the end, down I went! The “mattress” covering the sofa springs was literally an inch and a half thick and incredibly uncomfortable. The cable connection at the wall was broken and the cable from the television wasn’t even connected. The shower was a leaky mess. The ceiling had mold and the shower curtain bar looked like it came from a surplus shop, rusted and just gross. The sink didn’t drain….it was AWFUL!! But we were stuck there for one night with the promise of “something new in the morning.” And, like champs, they pulled through and put us in the White Sands. Our location was phenomenal, building 54, room 5401. Our view overlooked the water and into the restaurant area of the Colonial area. This room had a wonderful king sized bed, a sofa with memory foam mattress that folded out, in-room Jacuzzi tub and a two person shower, and separate toilet! Storage was fabulous for us all with a large closet, a TV stand that held glassware that we just moved and a three drawer desk. There was room for all of us to unpack and store four suitcases in the closet. Our ground floor room had a nice walk out porch with two chairs and a small table. We were able to dry our wet bathing suits overnight and it wasn’t too windy. There was no noise from neighbors and I never heard anyone walking by or the traffic of the golf carts. Lovely room for sure!! My only complaint that really wasn’t the room, but more of an equipment problem was the mini-fridge. It was well stocked, but the beverages were sometimes cold, sometimes barely cold and sometimes not cold at all. We did make a suggestion for repair at check out, but dealt with it all week.
GROUNDS: Absolutely beautiful! The Grand Palladium has taken on a “Green” attitude and conservation is stressed at every point. All organic waste is recycled. There are recycling stations all over the resort. The groundskeepers do such a wonderful job and keep things beautiful all day long. While we were there, there were to broken railings along the wooden walk-way, but they were quickly (allowing for materials to arrive) fixed and all was well again!

POOLS: The pools are great….a tad chilly but not crowded. We split our time between the two main pools during the day and then went to the Natural Pool (south end of the beach past the wedding court and in the middle of Riviera) during the afternoons/early evenings. Pool chairs were readily available. Don’t be fooled by anyone that says they aren’t. Perhaps what they mean are that chairs in SUNNY locations aren’t available. Yes, that is the case, but the loungers are portable and I found myself able to sun all day long. People do “claim” chairs early in the morning, but there really is no need if you are willing to just move your chair. There is no topless sunbathing at the common pools, but is okay at the Secret Pool. There are adults only pools well marked on the map. The Natural Pool is a must see. Take the time to visit in the evening around 4p, the tide rises and brings in all kinds of cool stuff if you look. We saw many fish, an eel, crab, sea urchin, and others. Snorkeling gear is probably a great idea as you can get up close with the fish….they also really like bananas!!
BEACH: I think the beach at the Grand Palladium is one of the nicest in all of the Cancun/Mayan Riviera area. Again, chairs are plentiful. The beach is clean and soft, with staff members always present making things perfect. There is a watersports area where you can rent and/or use equipment from the resort. Trade in your room key and you can do a myriad of things. Snorkel, mask and fins are allowed to be checked out for 50 minutes. There are paddle boats, sea kayaks, wind sailing and I am sure I am missing something else.

FOOD: Really, where do you start on the food?? The buffets were incredibly impressive. All the hot food was hot and the cold food cold, which says a lot about the food quality standards here. Presentation was always great. Salads were continuously refreshed; nothing looked like it had been sitting there forever. Lines, if there were any, were maybe 4 people deep (Usually for omelets in the morning). There were so many foods to pick from every day that you could always find at least a few things that were “new.” The only meal that I could say was “repetitive” for selection was breakfast.
For those of you planning on the ala carts, make the Brazilian (Rodizio) the top of your list! We ate there two nights. They offer 8 skewered meats that are cut to your serving size preference and they are wonderful! Full salad bar and dessert always! We ate at the Beach BBQ….overrated. Probably the “worst” of all the meals we had. Traditional American BBQ fare with little flavor and meat was quite overdone per my family members. The Chinese place, Bamboo, was not that great either. Just slabs of meat with Asian sauces poured over them. The presentation of the side dishes was phenomenal at this place, though….very creative! We also had the chance to dine at Sumptuori. Food was good, but the “show” was more or less the cook clanging on the table with a metal spatula and spinning it around a few times. We just watched him cook our main courses for the most part….nothing spectacular. All of the ala carts were available for seating when we got there. We walked right in every time….but we also dined between 6 and 7pm. Most tables are for parties of 4, so I assume the wait time is for larger groups?
THINGS TO DO: The spa was WONDERFUL!! My husband and I booked our massages with a woman walking up to people on the beach. She offered a 15% discount to book with her and we did. I casually mentioned that I wanted the stones HOT for my hot stone massage, I was not disappointed! I was so relaxed and my massage therapist, Ivonne, was wonderful! My husband booked a deep tissue massage. He said that at first he thought the massage wasn’t deep enough, but as the therapist worked, it was to his satisfaction. Both of my girls had braids done. One had a French braid put in and the other, 5 tiny braids with flower beads at the end. Each kiddo was $10 and they had their own “spa” experience. I will say that this was the first spa I had been to that did not have private showers available. They are all in a common area and doors are totally see through, so what they consider private, I would say enables voyeurism! I also wasn’t able to explore the spa much but it was very quiet and the parts that I did see seemed up to date and modern.
Akumal: A must do!! Grab a taxi and for $20 US, go to Akumal Beach. It’s about 10 minutes south of the resort and worth the trip. Go to the Conservation Center and sit through the presentation, then pay $25 per person and snorkel!! We had Tito as our guide and it was amazing. We were able to see 6 sea turtles, 3 sting rays and tons of fish! When you get to the beach, don’t rent from the palapas, you will miss all the important information and will also be herded into a large group to “tour” the reef. Trust me, you will want your own guide! 45 minutes of a guide guaranteed not to be rushed or kicked by others. You also learn why you don’t touch the sea turtles and how important it is to protect the reef that the conservation group has so lovingly cared for. My kids declared it a highlight of the trip.
SCUBA diving: My husband and daughter did the resort course for $110 USD per person right at the resort. They watched the required video, did the pool training and went on a 40 foot dive. My daughter thought it was amazing and asked to go again the next day….but high winds prevented that.
Segway tour: Probably our favorite thing to do the whole trip!! We went on our second to last day and only wished we had done it on one of the first days. Sign up is by the Activities palapa at the Main pool on the Colonial side. There is a stand with a green banner….you can’t miss it. For $35 USD you get a fun tour of the resort. It will amaze you how large this property really is! Juan was a fantastic guide and patient teacher.

MISC: This resort is fabulous, due to the staff. We were always greeted with a Hola at White Sands and everyone seemed to be happy that worked there. I would highly suggest tipping the people that provide such an atmosphere. Tipping does get you better bar service, but the service isn’t bad to begin with. I would like to mention Alberto at the Azul. What a guy!! My daughter folded her retainer in a napkin and it was accidentally cleared with the dirty dishes. Alberto went into the garbage and found it!! We were so pleased!!
WHAT WOULD MAKE THIS RESORT BETTER?
Pool floats for sure. Pool drink service as well as beach service.
Better music at the pools….why do staff members just click off songs and skip songs. Just let the music play and turn it up a bit!
Open both doors to the entrances of the restaurants. There are constantly people standing in the doorway, and with one door open and the other locked, you can’t get in or out with someone in the way.
Someone by the buffet entrances controlling people feeding the wild raccoons and other animals. These animals are wild. Why do people insist on feeding them? Then they are the ones that come right up to your beach chair and beg. The resort needs to put this feeding practice to an end.
I observed a man who was refused golf cart service because he wasn’t a Vacation Club member. He politely explained that the transfer train was too high to get up and down from. I was shocked when the staff member did not accommodate him. But, to give credit where it is due, another staff member politely took him in his cart that had two more spots! Not sure of this staff member’s name, but kudos to him!!

All in all, this is a WONDERFUL resort; the little things are just little things. I like to write detailed reviews so people know the “whole picture” and make their own deductions. Things that are small to our family may be large for other travelers. Hope you all enjoy your trips!
