We stayed for 2 weeks returning on 5th Oct. at the Colonial section in room 1625 and we found this to be central to all amenities. It was as close to go to the Riviera/White Sands lobbies as the Colonial/Kantenah (5-10 mins walk to each).
The complex is big, but you can get everywhere quickly when you discover the short cuts. If you don't want to walk you can use the trains from lobby to lobby or the shuttles to your room. We only used the trains when it was raining, however if you plan your route correctly, you can get from your room to any lobby by covered walkways.
Rooms.... We stayed in a standard room which we found was quite adequate. The room was spacious, air/con good if not a little noisy, pillows are a little lumpy but there are four and a spare in the closet, so just pick the best one to sleep on. The room was very clean but ' yes ' a little dated although some rooms have seemingly been refurbished. Fridge stocked daily and a coffee maker. Bed linen changed regularly and clean towels daily.
Pools ....The pools are lovely and the small ones hidden in the jungle along with the saltwater pool are ideal if you want to relax and sleep off the food / alcohol. They all have their own bars.
Bars .... There are an abundance of bars, we found that watching the live bands playing in the various lobbies was a good way to finish the night off. The Colonial and Riviera lobbies stop serving at 1.00am, but if you haven't had enough by then, you can go to the 24hr beach bars or the disco. We used Hemmingways bar in the Kantenah lobby after our meal because it was air conditioned and served quality drinks until 12.00. Alex the barman has a constant smile and will get you any cocktail you ask for. This is also a good place to chat to other people at the bar. There are a wide selection of books here to borrow and exchange.
Restaurants.....All restaurants are excellent. The speciality restaurants are quality and the pager system works well, if they can't seat you immediately. The buffet restaurants have something for everyone and if you don't get a drink brought to you, just ask.
At lunch time you can use the pool side buffets, the main buffets or just pick something from the menu at the beach bars.
The staff without exception were friendly and helpful, if you know a little Spanish, use it, if not the staff will know enough English to help you.
We could not fault the holiday, the grounds are beautiful, the wildlife interesting and we were never bored during our stay. The size of the resort is the bonus.
If you can swim, go to Akumel beach to look for the turtles. We went on the local mini bus (pick-up opposite side of road to hotel) and found some massive turtles (about 4 feet in diameter). Snorkels and life jackets can be hired from the beach.
WORDS OF ADVICE......We bought our souvenirs from the stalls which are set up in the lobbies each evening. We were promised an excellent deal from a very nice man if we bought more than one item. He advised us the price would be far cheaper than than the hotel souvenir shops, however, he knocked 200 pesos off our 1300 peso bill and we found the next morning we had still paid much more than the hotel souvenir shop .....you win some you lose some, but he did sound like a very nice bloke, if we were'nt going home the next morning he might have got a few nice words from us !!!!!
We got quite a bit of rain during our stay and although the staff constantly try to keep the floors free of water there are lots of wet patches and the floors can be very slippy, hence lots of people wearing plastered limbs.
MOSQUITOS.....We went overboard and used Avon Skin So Soft, Superdrug Insect Repellant Aftersun and finished with a spray of Jungle Formula mosquito repellant.... we only had one bite each, until the last night, we became complacent and only rubbed a bit of Skin So Soft in our exposed areas. We return home looking like a mild case of measles.
Birds can be a nuisance in the outside restaurant, but they've employed an new member of staff to help.....see photo.
The resort is excellent and extremely well run.....just go and enjoy.
