“Great hotel. Rooms 3* Resort 4.5* Overall 4.0*”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 24, 2012

have just returned from a two week stay at this hotel. Overall the hotel is great and me and my partner had a wonderful stay.

Brief summary

Very well situated for excursions to Talum (Ruins), Playa De carmen (Town), Akumal (Swimming with turtles) You can reach all of these by Transportivo which are local buses that patrol the stretch of road that this hotel and all other hotels in River Maya are on. Buses cost £1.50 so are a great way to get around.

The wildlife here made a huge part of the holiday for me. See other comments for types...

The mozzies were a big issue for other travellers but we used "Off" this brand of repellant worked just fine. Dont be shy with it, Use plenty and you will only get the odd bite. I got 3 in 2 weeks.

The Staff were good, not great but good. tended to serve the spanish first but i suppose speaking the native tongue helps. its handy to tip yet they dont always seem to be appreciated. We tipped in all of the al a carte restaurants as the waiters serving were great.

The restaurants were all pretty good. Some better than others but generally of a decent quality. My favourite were the Chinese, the japanese and the steak house. Also the buffet foods were great quality. The best of any buffet that i have experienced.

Time shares. These are being offered around the lobbys all day but if you mention to them that you have travelled without your credit card they will quickly leave you alone. We were not bothered much at all but I saw others being so.

Rooms: Not that they matter as you dont go away to stay in yourroome but these are typical carribean style rooms. Dull yellow in colour. Generally clean but dark and gloomy. Need updating as they do not represent well giving that the hotel has 5 stars. We stayed in colonial and i now understand that these are the oldest of the rooms. Whitesand resort are supposed to be more modern. They are also very dark. the lights and lamps provided cannot light up the room.

I could go on forever but to sum it up..

Great hotel for holiday, 2 weeks stay at the max, 10 days maybe not enough. Grounds are kept well. Location great. Staff 9/10. Mexicans very friendly. Weather 10/10.

Most importantly: Value for money 10/10

I hope that this helps .

Just returned from a great holiday here and what a great experience. The place looks great on arrival and we were welcomed warmly.
Once registered you will be invited to sit with a Hotel Rep who explains various things about the Hotel, although they give useful information their aim is to get you to visit their exclusive Royal Suites. If you go they offer you a reward of differrent vouchers (we accepted vouchers for excursions) it is interestiing BUT don't go unless you are comfortable with being sold to and handling that situation, their aim to sell you a "time share opportunity"!
One other issue we experienced I have also seen mentioned in other reviews is the pillows in the bedrooms; they are very uncomfortable, a pillow menu is offered at a cost of $3 per pillow per night which we thought was expensive and possibly why the pillows were uncomfortable - to encourage you to spend more money!
Having said this our other comments are all positive; we travelled with our 19 year old son and had 2 standard rooms in the Colonial Villa area. They were of a good quality in size, cleanliness and furnishing no complaints from us and we were there to enjoy ourselves not to find fault. Bed clothes were changed every 3 days and towels could be changed daily if needed but you are encouraged to think about the impact laundering has on the environment - good commercial sense as well as environmental.
All the A La Carte Restaurants we visited gave us good food and pleasant service and only the Japanese and Sea Food required prior day booking (this may be different in other months), remember gents must wear long trousers and shirts with sleeves.
Buffet Restaurants we used at breakfast and for lunch service and were more than adequate, they are also available for evening meals with a more relaxed dress code but remember they are a buffet so the service levels are different the staff are much more directed toward clearing tables and "only" beer & wine is available, the staff are not rude it's just they clearly have a different emphasis to their work.
All the bars (Yes we visited most!) were also good and ranged from very relaxed beach bar to a pleasantly formal Hemingway Bar in Kantenah Lobby, where you could also exchange books. Good waitress service in all 4 lobbies for drinks.
The Entertainment Team worked hard and long hours, lots of games going on during the day - many involving drinking teqilla or beer, which our son found to be great fun. At night there was a kid's show at Colonial Theatre, followed at 9.00 by a more adult show. Then at 10.15 / 10.30 a further show was provided at the Riverside Theatre. No it's not Las Vegas but they were of a good standard and we found them very entertaining - well done to the Team.
There was a Beach BBQ, a White Party plus various other events organised and we were fortunate to be there when Mexican Independence was celebrated so even more reason to party!!
This is a great place and we had a really memorable 12 day holiday and would thoroughly recommend the resort, it is a small town really with lot's of interest and pleasant people, plus the wildlife and green surroundings give it an extra dimension just don't forget your mosquito spray!!

Room Tip: We had 2 rooms in the Colonial Area and they were quiet but close to all amenities in all of the oth...

We where in 'awe' as soon as we arrived at the resort. It was our first big holiday as a family and we were so happy we chose Riviera Maya.
The hotel wildlife is amazing and it's everywhere, the kids thoroughly enjoyed this as its not something you get to see in England.
The people that worked the bars and restaurants were so pleasant and always smiling, they were lovely.
The food was great and you have so much choice with the different a'la carte restaurants, we tried the majority of them and cannot complain!
Infact I cannot complain about anything really, so much to do in and around the resort (jump on collectivo and visit Akumal).
The hotel was clean, food amazing, beach is beautiful, cocktails a definate thumbs up and just overall a fantastic family resort, we are going back and cannot wait!!

Fantastic hotel. The Grounds were wonderful and the area was very unspoilt. You could walk around the grounds and encounter many animals, such as iguanas, flamingos, many beautiful birds, racoons etc. The highlight was watching turtles come up at nigh to lay their eggs on the beach.

Riviera Maya and its surroundings have may things to do, both historical and for active older children/teenagers (my children were 13, 11 and 10)

I got married at the Grand Palladium this August (2012). Overall, it was a very good experience I would recommend for a destination wedding!

Details: 35 people, Canadians, Renewal of Vows (we got married legally in Canada before we left).

Vanessa was our coordinator and she was amazing. She made sure things went smoothly and helped to keep us on time and having fun.

We had our wedding at the beach gazebo at 4:30 PM. It was a very rainy day, but we lucked out and the rain let up for us to have our ceremony and some pictures before the skies opened up again!

Dinner was at Portofino restaurant in their semi-private area. Don't bother to book a separate room, save your money! The semi-private room was set outside the restaurant and we had privacy. It was a beautiful spot! 2 of our guests were vegetarians and they accommodated for them and made sure they got vegetarian options. Food was tasty, thought it took some time for it to come out for all the guests. We waited to eat until everyone was served, and so our food was cold (but still tasty). One warning, the mosquitoes were terrible!! It took some time for them to light citronella candles, and all of us got quite a few bites.

Cocktails were after dinner and originally planned to be at the Las Rocas bar. Unfortunately the weather was terrible, so we ended up in another spot close to Portofino restaurant. We decided on the Tres Leches cake and it was delicious. Definitely would recommend.

Extras:
We ordered bouquets for the bridesmaids which were beautiful, as was my wedding bouquet. (Not pic of this sorry, the photographer took those and I haven't received the pics yet). Also ordered corsages for our mothers, which were only okay. Kind of sparse for the money. All the flower options looked beautiful and there was lots of choice. We ordered our own wedding favours and Vanessa ensured they were set up and at the tables for us.

The only thing that was a little crummy was that we kept having to move around, as you can only stay in each place for 2 hours. But it didn't cost extra, so I'm not complaining there.

The Resort:
We went to the Brazilian place (AMAZING!! GO!) The Mexican (Meh) and the Asian (Crap). The buffets were pretty good and offered a lot of selection, though were quite strict about the shirt with sleeves policy. My husband got kicked out for wearing a tank style shirt.

We went to the White beach party which was okay, but more meant for families and kids. The traditional show was pretty cool though. We didn't see any of the entertainment staff shows, but our in-laws did and enjoyed them. Drinks were pretty good, though a little watered down. The adult pool became one of our favourite hang outs and we spent a lot of evenings there.

Some of us got the infamous 'towel' art. However, my husband and I didn't until our wedding night (then they seemed to realize we were special guests...) It didn't seem to matter how much you tipped or didn't tip, it seems more like an expertise of your maid.

Another hiccup was that all of our guests ended up being spread between 6 buildings. The resort is HUGE and it was a pain trying to find each other. Honestly, I'd recommend brining walkie talkies or something so you can actually find each other! For this reason, I wouldn't go back to the Palladium. I am more of a fan of smaller more intimate resorts (budget wise this was the way to go). It takes about 20 minutes of walking to get anywhere so be prepared to be footsore. We did take the trollies from time to time, but usually just ended up walking around.

We went to the disco a few times, it was fun. Usually upbeat, but never too busy. We went to Coco Bongo in Playa del Carmen and it was a fun (but crowded...no such thing as building capacity limits in Mexico).

I went to the spa on my wedding day and had the 90 minute massage. It was nice and relaxing, though they sold me on 5 different massage types and mostly it was a relaxation massage. Still amazing!

We hired Claudia Rodriguez a local photographer to do our pictures. She was very sweet and a pro. We are still waiting on the pictures so I can't 100% recommend, but based on her professionalism and obvious experience I can 99% recommend her :)

Overall, if you are looking for a well priced, nice place to have your destination wedding, you won't be disappointed with the Palladium. I wasn't! But if you are looking for a small, intimate place, keep looking (and expect to pay).

Room Tip: Don't bother to pay for the upgrade to Jr. Suite if travelling in the summer. We paid for it, a...

My husband and I visited this resort in June 2012. We travelled with First Choice and although the flight was 11 hours the cabin staff on the flight were very good.

Cancun Airport well that was an experience long wait at customs we lucky that we were one of the first few people off the plane good job cause there is a lot of queueing. Queue to get your passport stamped, then collect luggage then queue to have your luggage x-rayed. When we stepped out of the airport the humidity hit us. My gooddness the sweat just dripped off you, got to the coach which was great as it was air conditioned.

It took just over an hour to get to the resort and the rep we had on the coach was very good. Check in was smooth and we were taken to our room by a bell boy via a luggage trolley. Room was good, we were upgraded as we have used a few Fiesta hotels in the past and received a bowl of fruit which was a very nice touch. We had emailed the hotel before arriving with some specific request and all but one was fufilled. We had asked for a top floor as after reading reviews it was your only chance of a view but we got a middle floor with a jungle view. This was fine as it attracted all sorts of wild life which was lovely to see. The room was cleaned daily and we did get lots of towel art and toiletries were replished daily. The air conditioning was good but with the humidity everything in the room was damp - bedding, clothes sofa etc.

The resort is huge and beautiful but walking around is an effort as you are constantly sweating unless of course in the pool or the sea. Great snorkeling saw load including a huge sting ray that was amazing. Loads of bars but must say that the beach/snack bar was not good. Constantly busy and uless you were waving $ bills it was hard to get served. The standard of the snack bar I must say was poor. Main restaurants all served the same menu each night but even though the menu was the same depending on what time you dined would depend on how well the food was cooked. But there was plently of choice you could always find something to eat. With all the Ala carte restaurant you need to get there early in order to get a table with too much of a wait. We tried several and these were hit or miss. We went to the steakhouse 3 times which I am surprised at as on the 1st visit it was pretty bad but our last visit was great. Brazilian was good although the waiters are rushing around trying to get everyone served. The Italian was lovely but the service was very slow, we got our starter but then had to wait at least 45 mins and again the same for desert. Went to Ribs and more which was not good, my lamb chops were nearly raw and when I sent them back to be cooked more they weren't much better on the second go.

We didn't join in the day time activities as we never knew where they were happening apart of course for the water polo & dance lesson. The activities were not well advertised or announced. Also the majority of the guest were from the US and the did monopolise the activities. We only saw 2 of the shows which were very good.

One gripe that I had while there was that the beach & pool furniture was never cleaned. It would be put back into place at the end of each day but the following morning when we got our beds we would have to wipe them down as they were often covered in bird droppings and if anything was spilt on the tables or beds these were never cleaned.

Although the hotel is all inclusive getting a drink from the bar could be difficult as with the American tipping culture the bar staff would serve them those waving $ first as well as fulfilling the orders from the waiteresses.

We visited Playa del Carmen a couple of times using the local buses. This worked really well and was a very efficent service but the do pack em in. 5th Avenue was like running the gaullent with shop keepers trying to entice you into their shop which get a bit annoying after a while.

We did one trip which as swimming in a cenote & swimming with turtles both of which were fantastic and well worth the money.

The wild life in the resort was amazing great to see so many different animals.

All in all we had a good holiday but with the humidity and the lack of a personal service due to the size of the resort I don't think we would return.

We were glad to get back on that plane and get back to the good old UK weather.
