Friendly staff, they obviously care about the bay. Pictures are up identifying creatures found in the bay, and facilities are nearby.

Being first timers to the Akumal Bay we did not know our way arround the bay and decided to take the guided snorkling tour with Centro Ecologico. The guide was very friendly and good in english, the rest of the staff was fluent in spanish. A free of charge, introductionary video explains that the Bay of Akumal is seperated in varios sectors for the protection of marine life. Essentially, without a guide, access is limited to one sector: The turtle sector. Already from the beach you can see dozens of tourists scouting for turtles, already early in the morning. At a beach occupancy of 1800 people the bach will be closed.
The 300 Pesos tour took us in a circle past some old canons from a sunken spanish vessel all the way to the edge of the barrier reef. We saw a stingray in this area as well as big red snapper, which we wouldn't have otherwise. In the last stretch we entered the puplically accessable turtle zone and quickly saw the guaranteed 10 turtles. The turtles were absolutely unimpressed by the abundance of tourists.
All in all the turtles are the clear highlight of the tour, which we could have seen for free, since we had our own snorkling equipment. For those who don't the price is ok, although the tour is rather short (less then one hour in the water) and the time spent with the turtles is only one third of that.

This is a great place; nice, patient, staff and knowledgeable about how to introduce people (our 4 person family with a 14 and 12 year old) to the ocean, its wildlife, and snorkeling. We loved our 1 hour tour with the guide Roberto, and we saw turtles, fish, rays, and learned a lot. This center needs our support and needs to be getting the word out about protecting the environment so that people don't ruin what is in the Akumal beach...it is all a treasure. The equipment we rented for $25 a person was in great shape and worked fine...though my son's mask filled a bit with water and we learned to get a better "sticking" (to the face) mask.
The Centro also has educational exhibits and videos which anyone can see for free and SHOULD! We are happy we supported this place so they can do more.
We later returned with other equipment and went out on our own. Out on our own we saw someone trying to race after and touch the turtles(a total no-no if we all want to keep seeing them)...we couldn't believe someone would be so uninformed as to do that...that is why we wonder why there isn't more "information required" before people and especially kids are allowed to just go in on their own...and why we are urging everyone to please get informed before you venture out! This place and this beach is a treasure and we hope it stays intact and protected.
Don't miss it and try to go either really early or later in the day when most of us touristas are out of the water!

My family of 7 drove down to Akumal from Puerto Morelos after advisement from others here on TA.$40 car rental $10 in gas and $25 a person got us a video on the reef and proper treatment, over one hour of snorkeling with a very knowledgeable guide, sighting around 20 turtles, several stingrays and many other large fish and coral. We stayed on the beach after and our children were allowed to continue snorkeling without a guide closer to shore. Great shopping options and many dining options right there as well. Ate at Lucy's right there. Spent 3.5 hours here and enjoyed every bit of it. Showed up at 11, last tour goes out at 11:30 they said the day we were there.

Pretty ordinary outing. Not a Big Bang for our buck! We were expecting to see a lot more on the outing. However, lunch after was great!
