We weren't sure how well stocked the local grocery/ convenience stores would be in Akumal but didn't want to pay $30 extra to have the airport transfer service make a stop at a Walmart or super Chedraui type store in Playa. The food has to be hauled into Akumal from larger cities, so you will pay more for the convenience of shopping local. Since we did not have a car, it was well worth it.
We were pleasantly surprised to see the majority of the basic supplies you need to stock a fridge for breakfast, lunch, dinner and drinks were all available. Most of your general dry and canned goods, plus bread, cold cows milk, eggs, butter, fruit juices, cheese, fruits, some veggies, cookies, chips, ice cream, softdrinks, bottled water, beer, wine, liquor and an ATM machine! The selection of meat wasn't the best but there was lunchmeat available. There was also a limited selection of farmacia (pharmacy) items. They had a good supply of souvenirs. (If you can't find something here; just across the street is a super Chomek store).
El Pueblito is on the north side of the street in Plaza Ukana just west of the Akumal arches. Usually at least one of the staff spoke English well enough to figure out what you needed.
