“Amazing Holiday”
Reviewed June 4, 2014

We loved our time at the Gran Bahia Prinicipe Akumal! It is a clean, safe, and fun resort for a single Mom to travel with a young child and lots of great kids food, pools (waterpark) and activities. Thank you to the event staffs: Jorge, Merce, Raquel, Tony, Luis, Angel, Alain, and Brenda. My son had an awesome time swimming with the dolphins at Tulum!!! We would definitely recommend this resort to family and friends back home in Canada.

We loved our time at the Gran Bahia Principe. Best location if you are going to take excursions as they are close by.
Buffets were great but you do get fed up eating if there for 2 weeks. A la cartes were excellent. Japanese and Brazilian superb. Italian in Akumal was also very good and the cheeky little Mexican waiter was like a little Del Boy! We were promised 8 but only got 6!

Usual sunbed huggers around main pool at Akumal but loads of beds on beach. Great pools in Coba as well. Disappointed that pool bar 'CHIT Bar' was closed for the second week as it was next to our room and good for a refreshing cocktail after walk back from beach. Great chill out outdoor bars at all resort hotels very relaxing at night but most bars close around 2330. Bar and disco at Hacienda until 0230. Transport throughout all complexes until after 2am and is amazing but does make you lazy! Drivers very friendly and accommodating.Only pay bar is Corona Bar at Hacienda for all sports events on TV. Free Sports bar good for TV and pool and staff good with the measures.

On arrival take guided cycle tour from Tennis courts at Hacienda as this gives you an idea of where everything is. Very relaxing pace and easy for all to participate. Afternoon ride to Sian kan more hilly. Gyms are also good especially Coba if like me you don't like sunbathing all day long. Great beach areas and snorkelling is good for beginners.

Rooms were fine and slippers and housecoats provided. Minibar filled up everyday with a few cans, water and soft drinks. Crisps occasionally. Tequilla on arrival.

Staff are friendly and hardworking. Staff cleaning grounds constantly. We had a leak in AirCon all over floor and was fixed within the hour. We were offered a new room but declined as we couldn't be bothered with all the moving. Cases delivered to room on arrival and picked up for departure. Room service and requests on calling reception not a bother.

Entertainment is fine for the complex but not if you were paying at the door!
Found the Coba lobby and outdoor bar had the best atmosphere and Florentina (waitress) was very helpful and efficient as most staff were.

Golf course was excellent but pricey for the service. Wasn't given what I was promised, had to pay for balls, drinks after being told they were all included.

Complex was massive and many bars throughout to use after visiting chosen restaurants with transport to any part of complex.
Beaches are good and beach bar with hammocks and swings! Cocktails excellent. Most people bought large thermal cups to fill up to avoid many visits to the bar! If you visit the same bars and tip well you will be really well looked after by getting to know the staff. Iguana bar very relaxing and enjoyable.

Mozzies are here so be prepared and buy a bracelet.

Took a couple of trips to Playa Del Carmen. Took advice from reps to go to Hacienda and walk to Highway and flag down white taxi bus. Only 35 pesos (£1.50) per person to travel 30 miles! Drops you off in town for excellent shopping, food, massage for $18 and stunning beach. Local shopkeepers can be a little annoying but mexican food and beers superb! Main street for larger designer shops but backstreet for some local bargains. Taxi buses excellent service and safe.

Also took a trip to XelHa. Stunning but a little strenuous if you chose to snorkel from the top of the lagoon and then return to top and then float down on tube. Massive fish just swim past. Great cliff jumps, zip slides and rope swing. All transport, snorkels, towels, food and drink provided.

Poor show with only 1 hr wifi in lobby but can visit all lobbies for 1hr in each.

Overall excellent holiday and really enjoyed complex. Would recommend and visit again.

The Akumal is one of 3 top quality hotels in this complex, and guests are also able to use the facilities at the sister hotels, the Coba and the Tulum. Buggy transport linking the hotels, is provided free of charge throughout the complex from 7am until the early hours. The grounds of the hotel are immaculately maintained and wild animals such as coatis and iguanas roam in their natural habitat. On the beach, areas where sea turtles are nesting are cordoned off.

The hotel is on an idyllic white soft sand beach with turquoise water. Shallow sections of the sea have been created to allow safe family swimming and snorkelling, with many colourful fish coming close to the shore. Water sports - body boards, kayaks, scuba diving, catamarans and windsurfing are available for 1 hour a day for 'all inclusive' guests.

By 7am, most of the pool-side beds have got towels draped on them, with not a person in sight, but there's really no need, because there are plenty of pools and plenty of sun beds. Some of the best places to sunbathe are in the areas between the pool and the sea, where it tends to be much quieter, and you've got the option of going in either the pool or sea to cool off. Towels are provided, and these can be changed regularly before 4.30.You're never far from a pool-side or beach bar, with a great choice of cocktails, including many tequila based ones. Children are well catered for with a wide range of non-alcoholic cocktails.

The rooms are spacious and well equipped. We stayed in the Golden Club section of the Akumal, and were supplied with bathrobes and slippers, tea/coffee making, jacuzzi bath and a mini bar which was re-stocked daily with Mexican beer, bottled water and branded drinks Coca Cola, Sprite & Fanta. Complimentary 24 hour room service is provided. The rooms are fitted with air conditioning and a ceiling fan which are very welcome, because the temperature rarely dipped below 20 degrees at night. Mosquitoes are common, so remember to take a plug in deterrent. The plugs in Mexico are of the American 2 pin design, and it's much cheaper to buy the adaptors in the UK before you go. There were 3 of us in our room, and occasionally the maid would forget, and leave just 2 clean towels, 2 cups etc, but after a quick word with the receptionist, everything was soon sorted.

You'll be spoilt for choice with the food options. Each of the hotels has a large buffet style restaurant in the centre lobby, open in the evenings from 6.30 to 10.30, with a huge selection of local and international dishes. Finding a table was never a problem, and the service was superb. There are also 11 a la carte restaurants, which need to be pre-booked. These are very popular and tend to get full very quickly, so book as soon as you get to the resort. Highly recommended are La Gran Tortuga (Brasilian), Portofino (Italian), El Pescador (fish) and Mikado (Japanese). When booking for the Japanese restaurant, ask for a show table, where the food is prepared and cooked in front of you. Long trousers are required in Le Gourmet and Arlequin restaurants. Breakfast times in the main restaurants are 7.00 to 10.30 with lunch served from 12.30 to 3.30, and if you're still hungry there are 24 hour snack bars serving fast food such as tacos and nachos. There seems to be a shortage of English breakfast tea, which soon runs out, and you get offered the scented Earl Grey as an alternative.

If you like sport, there's plenty to do. There's a football court, open from 7am to 6pm, and because of the heat it's better to go early in the morning. There's no deposit or hire charge for any of the equipment - footballs, basketballs, tennis racquets & balls, bikes, archery and table tennis. You can take part in an escorted bike ride/walk at 10am each morning, through the adjacent golf course and into the jungle.

There's a dolphinarium inside the complex, where guests can watch the dolphin show free at 11.30 each morning. Interactive programmes are available, starting at around £50 per person to play with the dolphins.

Free wi-fi is available in the Golden Club and Akumal lobbies but the service is unreliable. The evening entertainment is the usual mix of dancers, circus acts, jugglers, singers etc. On one night a Mexican version of The Beatles appeared. McCartney now plays an organ, Ringo's piled on the pounds and there were some unusual words sung. The animacion team work hard and are not intrusive to those people who don't want to take part in organised activities.

For souvenirs, there are shops and market stalls in the Hacienda part of the complex. Be prepared to barter, and although many prices are quoted in US Dollars, it's better value to negotiate and pay in pesos, particularly if you're buying in bulk.

The complex is not far from the coastal ruins at Tulum, which lies south of the resort. You can arrange a trip there yourself, by catching a Colectivo minibus on the road, just outside the main entrance to the hotel. They run every 10 minutes or so,The fare is 30 pesos (about £1.50) per person for a single fare, and you'll get dropped off a short walk away from the ruins. The entrance fee is just 59 pesos (about £3 each). When you leave the ruins, there's a beautiful stretch of beach known locally as Paradise Beach, with a shack bar. You can catch the Colectivo back to the hotel for the same price, so for 2 people, it will cost you about £12 for the trip.

One trip definitely worth going on, is to the stunning Chichen Itza, one of the 7 New Wonders of the World. It's a 2 hour coach trip inland through the heart of real Mexican countryside, and the trip also includes a visit to an underground cenote (sink hole) where you can swim, and the typical Mexican town of Valladolid.

We also went to Xel-Ha, a natural lagoon in the jungle just down the coast from the resort. Here, you can swim or float down a lazy river, snorkel and see brightly coloured fish, or do optional activities such as feeding & swimming with manatees.

The weather while we were there was hot, generally around 30 degrees, but with some tropical thunderstorms, which mainly lasted just a few minutes.

The majority of the Americans/Canadians were extremely well behaved but the antics of some of them - putting sun beds into the family sections of the pool, carrying alcoholic drinks onto the transport buggies, and entering restaurants in the evening with sleeveless basketball vests, baseball caps on back to front, and barefoot - caused the security staff to intervene and politely remind them that the hotel rules had to be observed by all nationalities, and not just the European and local guests.

Overall, there's so much to do at this hotel, that you'll have difficulty in fitting it all in. The service throughout the resort was first class, Tourism is so important to Mexico that the locals go out of their way to make you feel welcome. We'd recommend this hotel and would definitely return one day.

we really enjoyed our stay at this hotel and apart from the poor evening entertainment and quite early closing times in the bars we would give our stay a higher rating. We thought that the food choices were of a really high quality with plenty of variation to cater for all tastes. The hotel is really kept very clean and the grounds maintenance staff are a credit to the management as they worked tirelessly to provide a superb environment to walk around we loved the grounds it really was a special place. We had some really lovely al a carte meals in the evening our favorites being the Brazillian steak house and the Japanese venue. The most disappointing evening was the mexican restaurant odd when you would think this would be their flagship restaurant .We loved the swimming pools and really thought the staff tried very hard at the water polo area worked hard at entertaining everyone always with a smile .The only problem that we had was we holidayed with our teenage son and there was not much for him to do in the evenings we would meet friends at the sports bar for some games of pool but they wanted you out at 11-30 pm on the dot then you had to make your way to the snack bar if you wanted to continue socialising and he got quite bored as there was nothing to occupy the youngsters I said that a pool table that was coverde over during the day but was available in the evenings would be a good idea. This was a minor gripe that slightly marred a terrific holiday we would definately consider going back to this hotel when we next return to this area of Mexico well done bahia akumal.

Room Tip: we were very happy with our room at the akumal and were very disappointed with the rooms at the coba...

My fiance and I stayed at this beautiful resort in April last year, We couldn't fault it at all. The only downside to this holiday was the fact that we were delayed 23 hours at Manchester Airport when flying with Thomson, however this is not the fault of the hotel, and once we finally arrived at the hotel we knew it had been worth it.
The rooms were very clean, new towels left everyday, fridge restocked, bed made up with lovely towel art which always puts a smile on your face! Staff were very friendly, always willing to help if you had any questions, they couldn't do enough for you.
Food-excellent selection, I am a vegetarian and still found lots to eat! Can't comment on the Al a Carte restaurants as we were happy enough in the main restaurant.
Surroundings - everywhere you looked there were always gardeners hard at work maintaining the gardens which were beautiful, also lovely wildlife everywhere- iguanas, coati's, birds, all harmless just happily sharing the resort with you.
Pools-were huge, always sunbeds and you could swim over to the swim up bar as well to cool you down whilst staying in the water! Step a few feet from the pool and you were on the beach, amazing views, like being in paradise!
Overall we loved our stay at this hotel and have had the holiday blues ever since, you must visit this place if you are looking for a relaxing break-you will not regret it!
We enjoyed it so much we are going back again in 5 weeks and can not wait!

Loved this hotel, the best all inclusive we have been to! we liked it so much we booked to go back for three weeks in November , while we were still there. We liked the fact that we could use the Tulum and Coba hotels as well! it gives lots of choice of places to eat! liked the Coba buffet at lunch time as it was quieter and liked the fact that if you only wanted a light breakfast you could go to the snack bar overlooking the beach and nice and cool. Our favourite al la carte restaurants were the gran Tortuga, a meat lovers dream and Arlequin where the food was delicious and the service second to non. We requested villas 47 or 48 by E mail before going but they were junior suites, however they put us as close as possible in villa 50, lovely room and close to everything without being noisy. We never had trouble getting a lounger on the beach, whatever time we went.

We’ve just arrived back from a 2 week stay at the Golden section of the Akumal. Overall we had a good time, but there were a few niggly things that let this hotel down, namely not following through on promises – I expect better customer service than we received and I would rate this more as a high 3* rather than a 5*. Our room was nice, but a felt a little damp, so we struggled to dry out wet swim wear and towels at night. The room looks nice on the surface, but is a little tired upon closer inspection.

Our room was meant to come with bath robes as standard and after 3 attempts at trying to get them and a very rude receptionist I gave up. They never did materialise, nor did the promised bottle of champagne for another mess up, so we decided not to pay for the safe instead. The Reps sorted this out for us, which was great, but the hotel then wanted us to sign something to say we weren’t going to sue them – I didn’t want to sue them just get a bath robe, seemingly an impossible task!! The ‘agreement’ was laughable and even stated they had offered to move us to another room and had then resolved my complaint. Neither of which was true, so I simply crossed it out and signed it, tired of trying to get a simple bath robe! Unsurprisingly they still tried to charge me for the safe hire when we checked out!

I know this is only small stuff but I don’t expect to have staff being rude to me when I’m simply asking for something that is advertised at being standard in our particular room. I also don’t expect to ask for this standard item 3 times and still not receive it!

Pools/Beach
This resort is massive and you have access to all 3 hotels – Akumal, Coba and Tulum, so there is plenty on choice for where to eat and which pool to go to, but if you get there any later than 9am, you can forget about getting any shade! Our favourite pool was at the Tulum, as it was a bit quieter than the others and also on the beach.
We were a little disappointed with the beach – we expected it to be like the beaches in Cuba but it was rough water and the sand wasn’t particularly fine.
We went to Akumal Beach, a public beach about 5-10mins away and this was amazing. We got a taxi, about 170 peso one way and it took us pretty much directly to the beach. Make sure you barter on the way back and agree the price before getting in the taxi. To get a taxi you simply go to the main road and there will be one waiting there. At Akumal Beach, the sand was really fine and the water calm and blue. The added bonus was that you can snorkel with wild turtles just off the beach (for free).

Restaurants
We tried a few of the restaurants and would recommend the following: Dolce Vita – Italian; Gran Tortuga – Brazilian all you can eat meat, including filet minion (this restaurant is not for vegetarians); Don Pablo and Le Gourmet – International food.
We also went to the Mikado – food was nice, but the show table is what made the evening - make sure you ask for a show table when you make your booking.
Our favourite place for breakfast was the Cozumel at the Akumal Premier reception (in Coba) and the cocktails at this bar were pretty good too! Our favourite buffet was the one at the Tulum, it tended to be quieter and not normally any wait for a table.
You have to book you’re a la carte dinners once you are in resort, we did it on the first morning at around 8am and we still couldn’t get anything earlier than 9pm for the first 5 days of our holiday. So book all the restaurants at once and as early as possible.
The servers in the bars, buffet and the a la carte restaurants all work really hard and are constantly on the go – they speak English and would joke about having tequila for breakfast!

Going off the Resort
This is fairly safe if you want to do it yourself. We got a Collectivo to Playa Del Carmen, which is where the main shopping is. There are the usual souvenir shops (make sure you barter) and also some brand name shops, such as Victoria’s Secret, Nike, Starbucks, McDonalds. The shops will take both Mexican Peso and US Dollars, but will probably get a better exchange rate on the peso.
You just go up to the main highway (by the Hacienda) and flag down a Collectivo or quite often there was one waiting there. It costs 35 peso per person, one way, and take about 30 mins to get into Playa Del Carmen. The beach there is really nice, so take a towel with you too.
The Collectivo drops you at 15th Avenue, and you just need to walk in the opposite direction to the direction the bus is facing. Walk down approx. 2 blocks and this is 5th Avenue. To get back to the Hotel, go back to where the Collectivo dropped you off and get on the one going in the direction of Tulum – they will most likely ask you where you want to go before you get in. The driver will then drop you off on the highway and you simply need to walk across the road and you’re back to the hotel – simple! You pay as you get off and they will give you change.

We didn’t do any of the guided tours, but my husband went deep sea fishing with Captain Rick, which he said was great. We tried to go swimming with the Whale Sharks but the Mexican Gov. were dragging their heels with giving permission so none of the trips were running whilst we were there.

Overall, we had a great time, but this was more in spite of the hotel rather than because of it. It took us a while to ‘settle’ here, I think due to the size of the Hotel it has lost that personal touch, which is a shame as most of the staff work hard and are friendly, it’s just a shame a few let down the hotel. We would return to Mexico, but not to this hotel.

Room Tip: We were in block 72, which is probably closer to the Coba than any facilities in Akumal - block 66 i...
