“Amazing Wedding Venue for my Sons Wedding”
Reviewed April 24, 2014 via mobile

Paradise on earth. Really friendly staff, especially the wedding coordinator, Maria Hernandez, who in the space of one hour went the extra mile and rearranged every detail of my sons wedding due to forecast inclement weather. The result was an amazing day in an amazing venue capped off by a tri-jacuzzi party with our own DJ and batman for the whole night which had been decked out appropriately for the occasion. Great memories which we will all cherish forever, especially the bride. If you are thinking of a wedding abroad you should rally give this resort your consideration

This was our 3rd stay at the Bahia Principe in the Mayan Riviera and the first time with our daughter who is 5. The kids club is excellent! They have a schedule of activities each day, hour by hour. Our daughter would ask to go! It was a great break from the sun and let us have some time to ourselves! They even do rehearsals for the evening shows and involve the kids. Our daughter loved it!

The waterpark is also awesome! It is all shallow so you don't have to worry too much and can just let the kids run and play!

There is also a free dolphin show everyday which is fun for kids.

The beach is protected with large sand bags which make it very fun and safe for young kids to swim and play!

I highly recommend this resort for families with children!

My husband and I had not been on a trip since our honeymoon almost 20 years ago, so we were very excited at the idea of attending a friend's destination wedding! We booked 8 months in advance, and could not contain our excitement! When we arrived, our group was met by the hotel Manager at Akumal, and he nonchalantly informed us that there were no rooms available at Akumal, but that he would upgrade our group to another hotel. This upgrade was Sian Kaan and is located across the hwy with a 10 - 15 min trolley ride to the beach or back to Akumal. Our group did not consider this an upgrade at all! True, he did offer to give us a gold bracelet that allowed 4 (not the 3) a la carte meals included in our package, but we learned pretty fast that it was impossible to book reservations for a group and so we only used 1 a la carte meal. After arguing for an hour and watching my friend (the bride-to-be cry in the lobby) we agreed to be moved and scattered throughout the Tulum hotel, which took another 2 hours to check in. We learned that Air Transat had been aware that our group was going to be bumped from our hotel and they knew that 80% of the tourists were over booked for Akumal, but no tour representative was there to assist us, or give us a heads up!! To me, this kind of business practice is outrageous...When I inquired about the hotel's policies and practices, Luis the Manager stated that as long as he offered an "upgrade" they were covered, and when I asked about a policy that determined who was chosen to be bumped, there was none. For tourists to book so much in advance, and to learn they are not getting what they paid for, it doesn't leave you any choice BUT to accept accommodation... lets be clear, again it is not an upgrade when the room/hotel they put you is of a lesser value, has no working toilet for 3 days, has a broken a/c and you learn it is a standard room, not the junior suite you paid for. The saddest part is that we encountered many of these 80% who were overbooked, and they were all there to celebrate birthdays, weddings and other special events that were ruined by the insincerity of the management, and the complete disregard for customer care. I think this is a horrible business approach, but the most appalling part of all was the lack of care/concern shown by the hotel Manger at Akumal. This is a shame because the other staff (bell hops, wait staff, housekeeping, bartenders, trolley drivers etc) were fantastic!

Room Tip: Be sure to understand completely what the hotel says is an upgrade, and to be sure that you agree be...

My husband and I just returned from a week at this resort and already I want to go back!
First of all, let me start by saying I am a travel agent and really scrutinizing every inch of this resort. I have high expectations and they really didn't disappoint.
I just read a negative review from someone who travelled to this resort the same wk we did and cant believe how different our experiences were. I think everyone has different expectations but as a travel agent, I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this resorts to my clients.

The grounds are stunning, well kept and very clean. We stayed in room 4803 which was the perfect location. It was on the ground floor with a partial oceanview and literally 10 feet from the pool, beach, lobby, and buffet. The snack bar and activity pool were also just a short walk away.
The rooms are spacious, nicely decorated, and were cleaned and restocked daily.
The buffet at Akumal had a great selection and the food was consistently good.
We tried the buffets at Tulum and Coba, and although the food and presentation was similar to Akumal, I thought Tulum had the best service and atmosphere.
My favorite was the Japanese restaurant Mikado! The service is impeccable, the food was amazing and I really enjoyed the cooking show.
I would also recommend the Italian restaurant, Dolce VIta. Great food and service.

If you dont want a full meal, there is a 24hr snack bar on the beach very close to the activity pool, not far from the main lobby. The food was always fresh, hot and plentiful.

The pool was huge and absolutely beautiful. My only complaint would be that it is difficult to get a lounge chair. Even though there are signs everywhere that say don't reserve chairs, by 8am-9am, every lounger had a towel on it. It was very frustrating, especially when some of these people wouldn't show up until later in the day.

Overall, I believe this resort deserves it 5 star rating. The staff work very hard, and although tipping is not expected, it is always appreciated and in my experience well deserved!

Im looking forward to trying Tulum or Coba section next yr so I will post a review then!

My partner and I have just returned from two wonderful weeks at the GBP Akumal. If your booked or even just thinking of going you won't be disappointed. It's obviously not a 5* in relation to the Ritz or Savoy but is in Mexican standards. The staff are very friendly, the grounds immaculate, the transportation around the resort very welcome and efficient. The food was of a good and plentiful standard for a Buffet but the A la cartės were excellent. Didn't have a bad meal in any of them. Booking these restaurants was easy. Sat down with Guest relations the day after we arrived and within ten minutes had booked all six that we wanted and at the times we wanted. Can't see a problem unless you're a party of ten plus maybe.
The room was spacious, bright and comfortable. We were in block 51 so very close to most things.
Cleanliness was fine ( my partners quite hot on that sort of thing ), towels changed regularly and a nice place to come back to with petals and animal towel figures on the beds. Bathroom was nice with plenty of space and a nice rainfall shower plus bath.
The pools were fine apart from the Americans who's volume is set to loud or even louder after alcohol intake at the pool bars. Selfish people reserving sun beds became a pain. Plenty of signs stating don't but totally disregarded. Not the hotels fault. Plenty of loungers on the beach though.
Talking of beaches, we spent 3 perfect days on the beach south of the hotel. It's a large bay about ten minutes walk over rough and rocky ground but definitely worth it. A large bay with gentle waves, palm trees for shade, hundreds of fish and no crowds. The snorkelling was even better here than at Akumal beach.
I could go on but will sum up with a couple of recommendations. Try and visit Tulum Monkey sanctuary. It's a volunteer based refuge for Spider monkeys and other animals. Not touristy but very interesting and informative, plus you can swim in their Cenote and bat inhabited water cave at the end of the tour. They have a web site and high ratings on Trip Advisor.
While around Tulum try and visit the ruins and also Tulum beach. Not much shade but not much crowds either. Just miles of sandy beach and warm gentle waters.
Lastly, a big thanks to Kia and Tom, our Thomson reps. Excellent job guys.

HUGE! Lots of walking. Thankfully the Club Cars and trollies were in abundance and you could catch a ride anywhere you wanted to go! We arrived for a week from Toronto with two boys aged 11. They absolutely loved the activities pool on the south side of the resort. They played water polo and pool vollyball, and the men playing were always kind enough to let them join. The 24 snack bar was right beside this pool and the boys loved going in and out all day long for as many ice cream cones as they could handle! We picked up some dollarstore floats before coming but if you forget, they have a cute little cart by the pool where you can purchase floats, toys, sunscreen, chips, tampons--you name it! The snack bar was convenient to grab lunch with young boys in their wet bathing suits... and had things from pizza, to burgers, chicken nuggets, salads and more. Definitely not as many options as the large buffet, but still delicious all the same.

As always, get there early if you want a palapa at the pool. People reserve chairs with their towels like anywhere. No biggie. Lots of chairs in the sun, but palapas go fast.
Definitely try the Tulum buffet! It was by far our favourite!!! It's bigger than the Akumal buffet, and we found the selections better. Akumal however, was wonderful too. No complaints except for the fact that service was slow when ordering drinks, or removing dirty plates. The odd time you would get someone extra efficient, but while on vacation we weren't in a rush, so waiting a little bit was no biggie for us. If you are impatient, the service may not be up to your 5 star standards.

Coba--we did not like Coba at all. The boys being 11, they were too big for the water park and trampoline, too mature for the kiddie games, yet when they wanted to play xbox out of the sun for a bit, and some pool and air hockey.... they were kicked out of the teen club. Age is 12+ and they were very stricked with this. Our kids were very disappointed. Coba is also a LONG way from the beach. Thankfully, we didn't book this resort.

Our building was 80... ground floor. The odd bug crept in under the door. Again, big deal... you are surrounded by beautiful Flora! I would rather be on the ground floor then have to climb up and down the stairs numerous times a day. At first when we found our building we thought -- HOLY it's far from everything!!! Too much walking? SHould we ask to change? Rest assured, once you find your barings thoughtout the resort, it doesn't feel so big. You find quick ways to cut back to your room in a hurry. Plus, there is always the trolly to catch a ride with!

When we arrived, the sofa bed was made into a bed for us. We emailed ahead to ask for this and it was done =) We had two beds and the sofa bed. The fridge didn't work in the room, so we called right away and they replaced it within the hour! Super surprised!
Beds had memory foam on top of them and were nice and comfortable.
Only complaint with the room would be that from the get go our toilet kept plugging and not flushing properly. Whenever we called someone was there with a plunger within 2 mintues!!! You'd think tho that after the 2nd call they could have just left a plunger with us for the week... but no. oh well.

Take a trolly up to the Hacienda and check it out. There is a cool sports bar there to watch hockey, baseball, whatever... and shoot some pool! Its free of course and a fun little outing. Lots of shops up there too, and that's where the disco is. Never went... with kids it was too late for us! Just a warning, if you are going in to Playa Del Carmen, things are cheaper in town than at the Hacienda. But if you can't make it to town, the Hacienda had great souvenir choices.

Catch the Collectivo (local white vans/bus) for a quick cheap lift into town. Playa Del Carmen is an adventure! Check out 5th Ave. and Senor Frogs! Had a blast!

EXPLOR Fire. Best excursion ever! Talk to the rep in the lobby, our Air Transat rep Anna was AMAZING! She recommended this and it was an adventure we will never forget!!! Boys LOVED it!

Just ignore the letters you get at your room about free gifts, and exclusive cocktails parties... ignore people in the lobby. Just smile and say No Gracias. They left us alone right away.

We parasailed right from the resort--awesome!
Took cereal from the buffet to feed the fish on the beach - awesome!
Watched people swim with dolphins at Tulum - neat!
Food - excellent
Drinks - good

Please email should you have any questions, I would be happy to chat more about my amazing family vacation!!!

I booked this trip with my fiancé 7 months in advance to go down and celebrate a friends wedding. When we arrived we were greeted by the hotel front desk manager who informs us that the hotel Akumal is over booked and we are to be moved to one of their less expensive resorts. They tried to convince us that the resort they were moving us to (Sian Kaan) was an upgrade to what we originally booked. This resort however is nowhere near the ocean and is across the highway!!! Approximately a 10min tram ride to the beach. After arguing with the front desk manager for 40 minutes he finally agreed to move us to their other resort on the beach. We travelled by shuttle to Tulum. Went to the front desk and were met by hotel staff who had no idea we were coming. The rooms were not ready and we had to stay in the hotel lobby for 2 hours. So three hours after we arrived we got our keys to our room. The next day we met with our representative from air transat in the Akumal lobby. They informed us that 80% of their bookings at Akumal had been redirected to Bahias other resorts and there was little they could do. We then had a meeting with hotel staff regarding some sort of compensation for their error. We were told there would be none. After days of meeting various hotel "managers" the hotel offered to remove items such as spa visits from our bill as compensation. After agreeing, we were given a gag order to sign. We didn't sign it. The unfortunate part is that the resorts frontline staff (bellboys, shuttle drivers, waiters, maids, bartenders) were great. Helpful, polite and courteous. The managers on the other hand I found to be impolite, arrogant and extremely rude. They could care less that I had just been ripped off. The free golf advertised on their website was in fact free. But the $90 USD mandatory golf cart rental was not. In Canada we call those green fees. Course was nice but was by no means something to write home about. The food was mediocre. Even the a la carte's looked like buffet food. Just presented differently. Everyone in our group was sick at some point during our weeks stay. I'm no doctor, but it sure looked like food poisoning to me. This was my first and last visit to any Bahia resort. What a waste of a lot of hard earned money.
