“Second time still a charm”
Reviewed March 26, 2014

My wife and I stayed at the Grand Bahia Principe Akumal in February. This was our second visit and we were thrilled to be in sunny Mexico in the middle of the "winter the wouldn't end'. We requested building 47 or 48 and ended up with a partial water view in building 48, a nice touch as there are very few water views in Akumal. Our room was very nice, cleaned every day by Patricia and she was the master of towel art. Loved the rain shower.
Building 48 is close to the beach and the lobby so walking wasn't an issue.
We arrived on a Tuesday and had private transfer from the airport so there was no line at check-in which was very smooth. Arrived at about 2:30 and our room was ready. Did take a while for our bags to catch up but, this is Mexico, no worrys.
This being our second trip we have learned how to work the buffet. If you stick to the freshly made things and pick carefully through the rest there is plenty of good food and enough variety . We were there for 10 days and it never got boring. We booked our a la carte restaurants as soon as we arrived and this worked out well. Pescador was good, Arlequin was the best. We were disappointed that they have started to use buffets at some of the a la carte restaurants for appetizers and deserts. Only Arlequins was immune. The offerings were a cut above what was at the regular buffet but it somehow made the experience less special.
The grounds are beautiful. The beach is great, lots of palapas. There did seem to be an issue if you got there after 11:00 or so. But it was prime season.
The staff work really hard and all are very friendly. A special shout out to Armin, our waiter in the buffet, who took such good care of us every day.
While tipping is not expected, a couple of dollars in appreciation for good service goes a long way, and the staff works hard to make your vacation enjoyable.
We only left the complex once, to go to the town of Akumal. We wanted to check out the snorkeling. We were going to take the collective but the cab driver made us a deal we couldn't refuse. The town was small and overrun with tourists. The bay where the snorkeling was so good was so crowded that we decided to skip it. Did find a nice restaurant in town, Turtle Bay Cafe, and had a nice lunch. That alone was worth the trip.
Word of warning, stay away from the Privilege Club.Very hard sell.
All and all we really enjoy this resort and will be back again. Lovely setting. Friendly staff. Great value.

Room Tip: Buildings 47 and 48 have partial water view. Building 49 also near beach and lobby. Second floor see...

I couldn't really fault this immaculate resort. The rooms, which are cleaned to a very high standard every day are in villas, being 6 rooms per villa and are set in magnificent grounds with lots of Palm trees, lawns and plants. It is an enormous place with three lobbies Akumal, Coba and Tulum so you have a choice of three 'hotels' with restaurants and bars. The main restaurants being buffet style with lots of choice in food and drink and the 3 a la carte meals per week are a real bonus. The food in the a la carte restaurants is fantastic our favourites being the Mikado (Japanese) and Arlequin. If you book the Mikado, book the show table to see your meal being cooked! The pools are enormous with activities happening all the time but if you prefer peace and quiet the beach is fantastic with lots of sun beds to choose from. Akumal beach seems the quietest. As the resort is so big there are little trains running everywhere every 5-10 mins with stops to board them along the way and they will take you anywhere you want to go. All the pleasant, hardworking staff from reception to maids, and there are lots of them, cannot do enough for you and the brilliant bell boys do a fantastic job at the front of the lobbies. It is all spotlessly clean and we couldn't believe how well run and organised the whole complex is. Well done to everyone.....hope to see you all again soon!!

We chose Akumal over Coba, Tulum, etc., as it is the smallest of the Bahia properties and closest to the beach. We upgraded to junior golden suite and according to the print out of what we should expect, we then did expect certain amenities that were promised: 24 hour light fair room service-No.When we arrived in our room at 11:30 PM, exhausted and starving, we called for room service. They told us it was not included. I argued it was and to their credit, they did send us food, but not room service standard. A very, very small piece of reheated chicken and a few cold fries. Also listed as an amenity was a 24 hour concierge. Also not true. No number to call and not an offered service.
The property is lovely and clean and well landscaped. But HUGE! Even Akumal, the smallest, involves a lot of walking. The walkways are all faux cobblestone ladies, so ditch the stilletos and heels for night time dress up, as you won't make it ten feet without taking off your shoes. Because of the size, there is a LOT of walking. Be prepared. If you are a senior or someone with mobility issues, this may not be the best resort for you. While there are trollies, they are a tight squeeze and probably not easy access for seniors. The trollies come along every 10 minutes or so, so start walking and flag one down when it comes by. They have a sign on the top telling you where it is headed, Coba, Tulum, etc.
We were in building 75. This was a very quiet spot which I would recommend if you don't want foot traffic noise at night, noise from disco or entertainment or just want complete peace. We never heard a peep after 8 PM. While there is an ugly green lanscaping screen up in front of the building (new construction I am guessing), it wasn't a big deal, as we loved the quiet. If you want to overlook the beach, bldgs in the high 60's overlook the water. Bldg 75 also has a lovely hot tub pool directly behind it, with a bar. Not many know about it, so it is a great way to finish your day, but the bar closes at 5:00.
The beach was a 5 minute walk from our room, we cut through a path at bldg closest to the beach and sat by the sea wall. We were at the farthest end to the right and this location is where you want to be to avoid the crowds. There are ample palapas in a row and never did I have to look for a chair. If you go right, the beach gets more crowded and busy, especially closest to the pool area. However, the pier is a cool feature and there were fish swimming all around you. It depends on what you require from a beach-peace and quiet, less people: head right. Busy, crowded and more to see: head left. I would recommend bringing snorkel equipment, as the shallow lagoon-like water is great for this. I would highly recommend bringing water shoes, as the water entrance is very rocky and hard on the feet. I was a bit disappointed that most of the water is closed in by man made sea walls, to protect you from the waves. You are not allowed to venture beyond the walls. The surf is rough and on a windy day you will get wave wash over from the walls, so still get a bit of wave action. If you want an all access type water, this resort would not be for you unless you head far, far left which can be a hike from Akumal.
The food, by other's reviews, was excellent. While I agree there was plenty of choice in the large buffets (Coba and Tulum), I simply am not a buffet girl, so was pretty sick of buffet by the end. A La Carte are tough to book, so book ASAP when you arrive. We could only get 5 PM or 8 PM sittings but did get 4 bookings (you get an extra a la carte if you upgrade to royal golden). Japanese was excellent as was Brazilian. All is all, good food and certainly plenty of choice. I am a dessert girl and though the desserts LOOKED lovely, they really were bland and sometimes strange. The up side to Akumal is you have your own small buffet restaurant for breakfast and lunch so do not have to travel far for a meal.
The rooms were very good. Very, very clean and the rooms did not look as tired as other resorts. Our junior golden suite was large, with a table/chairs and a day bed, balcony and good size bathroom. Beds are "meh" and pillows typical. I am a stickler for cleanliness and this was top notch. The "fully stocked" bar fridge-not as advertised. There was soda, water, three beers, and two Halloween sized bags of chips and a tiny candy bar. We don't drink soda so asked for more beer and snacks. No way. My husband was actually extorted by the fellow we asked to please bring us more beer (and we weren't swilling it by the dozen, but three beers just don't go very far). He arrived and told us he would give us more beer for $20. We are supposed to get as much beer and snacks as we wanted, as often as we wanted. ALL INCLUSIVE! That was NOT the case. We tip discreetly but well, and never had a problem with demanding tips except the beer/extortion demand and demand at the airport (do NOT let anyone wrestle your bags from you. Act like a linebacker and keep your hands tight on your bags! Don't worry about being rude, as these people are pushy and will grab your luggage) We had an amazing bartender Jorge at the hot tub pool, so nice and he and my husband got along well. This poor fellow didn't get many tips due to his location so he truly appreciated tips. For some reason, they prefer Canadian dollars, even though the rate is lower than US. We heard they want US dollars, so we got a lot of US$1 bills.
All in all, I would give Akumalt a 3-4 star. The service was good, but they simply did not offer what was advertised for a royal golden junior suite. Tulum, Coba, etc. are much bigger, so I think choosing Akumal was a good decision due to its smaller size. The great part is you can go to Coba, Tulum, etc and use their restaurants and facilities. Akumal is considered "king" and you definitely get more attention with the yellow bracelet. Be prepared though, as the whole resort is simply huge. A lot of walking. I am fit and willing to walk but even I hopped on the trolley more at the end, especially in the heat. Having gone to smaller resorts in the past we now know for sure we will skip the huge resorts in the future and also go to adults only. If you want big, clean, lots of choice at buffet and love the sound of the waves, this is your resort!

We had a wonderful week. When we first arrived and saw the size of the resort, we were concerned, but it turned out to be a non-issue because there were so many resources. The check-in and acclimation process was so painless that we felt relaxed and on vacation immediately. The pools were wonderful, and we got up early every morning and swam laps in calm and privacy. The staff were incredibly helpful. Clearly it is a resort where the staff are instructed that their primary purpose is to make our vacation wonderful and they did exactly that! My biggest problem was that the food was too good and there were too many things that I wanted to try. I avoided the trams and walked as much as possible to work off the great meals. We did not take any excursions, but instead used the collectivos to go to Tulum and Akumal. They were easy to use and the hotel staff gave us all the information we needed to feel comfortable using them. We went scuba diving a couple of times with the dive shop on site and they were great. I highly recommend diving the cenotes, as something that is very different from other diving and worth experiencing, but go for the morning dive to get the best light. Also, be aware that you'll have to carry your dive gear a little ways when you do the cenote dive. Overall, highly recommend the resort!

Room Tip: We upgraded to gold to get a room near the ocean and away from the central area and were glad we did...

We went here for a wedding. This is a huge resort. Consists of a main building with reception, restauraunt and bar. All rooms are separate out-buildings/apartments that can be quite a way away, (no nipping back to room for sun glasses, its a journey ). Having said that there are frequent trolley type 'buses' to take you back and forth if you wish. Our walk was approx 15 minutes. Good mix of buffet style international food, sometimes not quite 4 star, but generally OK. Snack bar open 24/7. Rooms spacious, clean, nice bathroom and power shower. Staff do expect regular tips, especially at the bar, do this if you want good service - a small amount equal to 1 dollar seems to suffice
Plenty of beach, fabulous setting for a wedding, this was all organised well, and the wedding meal was lovely.
If you have children I would avoid the swim up bar, this got very rowdy & drinking started in earnest at around 11am at this particular pool. Many other pools to choose from which are family friendly. Overall a great place to stay.

The resort was very clean and well kept. The room was very clean. The beach and the pools were clean and no matter what time of the day we went there, we found chairs. The staff is very polite and helpful when we had questions. The food is good. There is lots to do in the resort or off the resort (excursions). We took our 11yr old & our 26 yr old met us down there, both had a great time.

My husband an myself have just came back from the Grand Bahia Principe Akumal stayed for 14 night,
After reading other comments I was ready for some problems but did not have one, The staff was very friendly from the booking in to the checking out, we stayed in the Gold section of the hotel but other than getting a 4th alacart and a Gold lobby to check in at its not worth the upgrade as the rest of the facilities at the hotel are fantastic.
The rooms are very clean an comfortable, we asked for a sea view but did not get that but it did not matter as the complex is beautiful.
My advice to anyone going to this complex is that make use of all the hotels an facilities on the site try all the buffets for breakfast, lunch and dinner you will never get bored.
All the alacarts are great the best ones we found were the Don Pablo (in the Coba) and the Le Gournmet in the Coba) men have to wear long trouser to these one but it’s well worth it.
The beach is as some people say its not the best but they have made it as nice as can be, there are plenty of sun loungers and lots of shade if needed everywhere on the complex.
We was very sad to be coming home and will look forward to another holiday here.

Room Tip: Block 66/67 sea view
