The whole hotel from restaurants, pools, grounds and rooms are all spotlessly clean. The staff work so hard and are very friendly.

The room was spotlessly clean, a decent size and had the biggest and most comfortable bed I've ever had the pleasure of sleeping in. Never slept so well!!

We stayed in block 75 which was halfway between Akumal and Coba lobbies. This suited us as we like to walk about and personally think that Coba(and Tulum) had much better buffets that Akumal. The choice was always very good and food pretty tasty for a buffet. Very impressed.

Of the al a cartes we went to Mikado, Arlequin, Don Pablo (highly recommended. Ask for the show table at mikado) one of the fish restaurants(ok) and the Brazilian and Mexican (awful, buffet much better.) Make sure you book your a la cartes as soon as you arrive or even better before you go as they soon fill up.

The pools are plentiful, with some for kids, games and louder ones and others for chilling at.
The beach is not great. Gets crowded and rocky in places.

Our only real negatives would be;
having to pay £36 for a safe key. Disgusting!
the bar and restaurant staff can be a little slow
and the biggest problem which is not the hotels fault is tourists. Rude Europeans who don't know how to queue, say please or thank you and don't seem to realise the tongs in the restaurant are for picking up food and putting it on your plate. Don't use your hands! Then you have the load and annoying American/Canadians who seem to think everyone wants to hear their conversation. Then there was the group of English/Canadians shouting and singing football songs and drinking like mad. By 13:00 watching them in disbelieve one starts puking up in the pool, slowly drags himself out and continues to 'feed' the plants around the pool for the next ten minutes whilst his mates(woman included) laugh about it and carry on drinking. Classy!! I guess it could be argued that the bar staff should notice when people are completely hammered and stop serving them. Personally I wouldn't blame the hotel.

Anyways rant over great hotel highly recommended.

Also please don't pay silly money for a taxi. Walk to the main road and get a collective. It's so cheap. We used it to go to playa del Carmen twice(day and night), xcaret, xel ha, xplor, Tulum, and Akumal 3 times. We spoke to other couples who had spent $100+ for trips to playa and Akumal. We spent about $15

We stayed at the Grand Bahia Principe Akumal Royal Golden Club in villa 66 the best building right on the beach with an amazing view. It is the farthest from the lobby and restaurants but well worth it. The trolley goes by every 10 mins or so and will take you to the lobby or another villa. From the lobby you can go to the Coba or Tulum. The Brazilian restaurant at the Tulum was fantastic 10 different meats brought to your table to choice from. The Mikado at the Coba also great, get a show table its quite entertaining. The Gourmet not so good. Bring your snorkel gear as the beach at the end by Akumal has amazing snorkelling lots of fish and shallow enough for kids. We did one excursion the snorkelling with the turtles cost was $50/ea for 2hrs 4 of us with a guide it was awesome seen lots of turtles of all sizes, stingrays, coral reef and lots of different fish.
We never had to get up at 7am to reserve a lounge chair as always lots to choose from unless you wanted a specific spot by the pool. We walked the beach everyday all the way to the end beautiful beach but some areas you cant get into the water due to coral or a retaining wall. Lots of very friendly raccoons, iguanas and others called coati, not sure what they were but they don't bother you.
A very big resort with the 3 resorts connected lots to choose from in restaurants, bars, pools etc... We found the best entertainment at night was at the Tulum, unfortunately they close up early 11:30 so if you want to stay up later you have to go to the disco.
We would definitely go again and highly recommend this resort.

Room Tip: Villa 66 the best, 3rd floor great view. No elevators so if you cant climb stairs stay on 1st floor.

There is nothing really wrong with this hotel and I can quite understand why some people, particularly families and groups would really like it. For us there were just certain things which, in our view, could do with some tweaks (as someone has already said) to make the hotel better.
As with everybody who writes review our comments are based on our preferences and others will disagree with us. So our comments are
- The resort was spotlessly clean throughout. Our rooms and all the public areas seemed very well cleaned and maintained and it is clear that the maids, gardeners etc work very hard
- The room was a good size, everything worked and the bed was comfortable. As someone else has noted, the walls seem quite thin, but we were lucky that no one around us was noisy. We slept very well
- There were plenty of sunbeds on the beach and we never had any problems finding somewhere with shade at any time of day. However, unlike many we were less than impressed with the beach. It reminded us of Benidorm, with rows of sunbeds under parasols set about 10 -12 ft apart, (minus the high rises, but including it’s fair quota of overweight gentlemen who mistakenly believe they look good in Speedos). This meant that by about 11am the beach seemed crowded with little space between you and the next party. The beach doesn’t compare favourably with other beaches we have been to in the Caribbean where the shade is natural, provided by palms and allowing plenty of space. In addition the beaches near our hotel were, once you got in the water, filled with rock and coral. They were also protected by gigantic (what look like) sandbags. It was difficult to get more than waist deep in the sea.
- All the staff walking about, driving the carts and working in the restaurants seemed very cheerful. Service in the buffets and a-la-cartes was ok, but not particularly prompt – no where near the standard of the Riu hotels we have stayed at. This is something that could relatively easily be improved
- The food was ok. It was nothing memorable and was usually only lukewarm. There was however a good selection and anyone who couldn’t find something they liked to eat really shouldn’t be leaving their own kitchen. We tried six a-la- cartes. The best two for food were the Mediterranean and the Italian. Best for entertainment was the show table in the Japanese. The fish restaurant was very poor.
- The evening entertainment was very weak. The Michael Jackson show was the worst we have seen (and we have seen a few). The guy doing Michael Jackson just didn’t have his heart in it. Similarly with the other dance shows, most of the dancers looked as if they were walking through the dance rather than performing it. In a complex this size you would have thought they could have recruited better.
- The live music in the bar was also quite....variable. It appears there are 3 duos that rotate between the three hotels changing on Saturdays(or at least we saw three over our two weeks in the Akumal). Two acts (keyboard player and singer, and guitar and bongo player) were ok but not as good as other acts we have seen in similarly priced hotels. The third, a guy playing electric drums and a singer were awful. The management cannot possibly have listened to them before employing them. That was disappointing because we like to sit in the bar and listen to the music and maybe have a dance in the evenings. Again this is something that could relatively easily be rectified

Now for the real gripes
- As others have noted, this hotel charges extra for the safe. Not a deposit, but an extra $5 per day. This should really be part of the all inclusive price (yes, I know they will increase the price). There simply is no excuse for making it an optional extra.
- On Thursdays there is no entertainment in the hotels, instead it all takes place at the Hacienda (a shopping area and square near the entrance – so a good long walk/cart ride away). They charge an extra $12 for that. The Riu hotels in the Dominican Republic do something similar –except they don’t charge extra.
- On at least three evenings during our stay the separate bar area where the live music took place was closed for a private event – presumably a wedding, and presumably at an extra charge to the wedding party. Nice for the wedding party, a pain if you are looking for somewhere away from the show/kids entertainment for a quiet drink.
It is unlikely that we would visit this hotel again unless we got a really good deal. That is at least partly because of the beach as described above. It is also unlikely we would visit another GBP hotel again. This is because many of the downsides noted above are the same as we have experienced in another hotel from this group, and because the points noted under ‘gripes’ above, taken with the on-site timeshare salespeople give the impressions that GP is more avaricious than other hotels.
As I said earlier, these are just our opinions and we can see why others (perhaps in a different age group – we are in our 50’s) love the hotel.

Really you cannot fault the facilities at this hotel there so much to do. In general had a lovely holiday but with some disappointment. We did have problems with our room which unfortunately went on for 4 days without being corrected. The hotel garden watering system would flood our room in the middle of the night. This would either wake us or when we returned from a night out prevent us from having access to the room as the water was stopping our room keys from working. So I spent 4 days walking to and from the reception lobby trying to sort the problem out. When its 2am you kind of just want to go to sleep!

Due to the door issues we had the maid service wasn't done for 2 days during our stay. One of the days being my friends wedding. So we were having to hunt people down to get some clean towels. Would have been nice to have a clean room with fresh towels as the grooms party was getting ready in my room.

Food was superb buffet restaurant has a huge selection something for everyone. The a la carte restaurants the same cannot fault the quality of the food. La Gourmet by far the best one!
Booking these a la carte restaurants was a difficult task your ok if you like eating at 10:00pm. Book early when you first arrive to ensure a sensible time! One thing I did find strange supposingly the restaurants were fully booked but when sitting in the a la carte restaurants they were not even half full. Only 3 bookings per week allowed in the a la carte restaurants so keep that in mind.

Beach is lovely and same with the pool area. Good activities throughout the day.

Real shame about the service I would have stayed here again if things had been sorted out. The only real issue we had was with the service we received.

Just a quick and short review. The hotel is beautiful. Food is ok. Something for everyone. Rooms were nice. Entertainment was for everyone. Pools clean and pretty. Had no issues. I'd come back again in the future. The beach is nicer on the tulum side. Golf carts always coming and going so transportation is always there to get around. Fun animals and lizards to see. We were happy. ;)

OK, if you're reading this then it must be because you are considering booking Gran Bahia Principe Akumal and want to get the low down on it. I did the same, it helped me make my decision and my partner and I have just returned from our 2 weeks there.
I did as previous travellers advised and booked the a la carte restaurants prior to leaving, I also asked for mattress toppers, a room on the top floor and to either have a sea view or be near

All my requests were fulfilled and although I was a little disappointed initially that we didn't have a sea view, I did get my 2nd choice near the lobby. I was actually glad for that as our block 50 was so conveniently situated for access to all amenities (and the transport), particularly as the lobby was the only place with wifi connection however, this isn't good in bad weather. I realised once settled, this was much better than having a view 'cos really we didn't spend any time in the room during the day and it's dark at 6 so wouldn't have been looking at the sea much anyway!!
Our room 5022, was spacious and comfortable, our cleaner Patricia kept it spotless and every couple of days there was a different figure made of towels on the bed. There is a fridge with soft drinks and beer supplied and if used, topped up daily, we only took a couple of beers/diet cokes during our stay as had plenty from the bars! A bottle of water, which we used to make coffee in the machine provided, was replaced daily.

We mainly used The Akumal buffet but did go to the one in Tulum a couple of times. The food is nicely displayed and there's a very wide range to choose from. My favourite was the Italian section where they would make a fresh sauce from ingredients you pick, whilst cooking this they heat up the pasta of your choice, then mix together .... delicious! Have to admit that one of the main reasons I liked it was 'cos it was hot and tasty as I did find that unless you managed to time it so the food you chose had been freshly put out, then at very best all meals were just about warm, I also found the food quite bland. As impressive as the desserts looked, they all tasted the same to me. Although we got all 6 of our choices for the al la carte, we only went to 3, Arlequin, Frutos del Mar and Mikado. Out of these, Mikado was our favourite as we had the show table and the food was served fresh from the hot plate and the sauces spiced it up (could've done with a larger portion tho!) After a night at Cocobongo (an absolute MUST DO!!!) we fell asleep after a day on the beach and missed our slot, then we just didn't bother with the remaining 2 having not been too impressed with the ones we had tried. I really don't understand the comments on here where people are raving about them as our opinion seems to be completely different!! One thing for sure tho is don't waste one of your choices on the Mexican one .... everyone I spoke to who'd been there said it was absolutely disgusting.

I can't praise the staff enough, from front desk to people working in the gardens who were always ready with an hola and a smile. The guys driving the trolleys around were also very obliging, one evening we were so hot we stayed on and just drove around for about an hour to get the breeze!

The beach is safe and the sand bags are a great idea but it gets very busy at the bar until lunch time so you have to queue for a while, in which case popping up to the pool bar was quicker.

Even tho I've made some not so positive remarks about the food, it really wasn't a big deal, just saying how it was and to summarise, we had the most amazing time staying here, the location, the environment, staff, in fact everything was just right for us and I wouldn't hesitate to recommend it!!

Oh, and last but not least, our Thomson rep KIA was brilliant!!!

Room Tip: Top floor block 50 nearest lobby and all amenities.
