I went with my husband and two kids (14 and 11) and no matter what anyone else says it was amazing for family's and it's the best vacation I have ever experienced in my life. The service was great, as well as the A-M-A-Z-I-N-G food, pools and adventurous family fun. I would recommend this any day.

massive massive place with lots of people , people movers, little trains , golf carts, in a nice setting. the beach with sand into the water is very small and the rest of the shoreline very rocky. expect long walks from rooms to beach, food, etc unless you catch a little train.
the price is right if you are a total glutton and or alcoholic, as the number or big bellies and red faces prove. its an easy place to bring children, as there are facilities and , wading pools, even shallow spots on the sea. rooms are spacious and nice and very comfortable. internet is amazingly slow and in the rooms very expensive, as are phone calls, even to 800 numbers.
do not get suckered into the timeshare pitch at the Prestige desk. it takes hours and they want 23000 to start or 18000 for off season. total waste of time and savage browbeating by professionally trained salesmen. that experience really put us off to the entire management.
food is very good and plentiful. recommend avoiding huge buffet and going to italian restaurant that is small near beach, unless you need 20 varieties of foodstuffs. alcohol is ok, rum and tequila very good, house wines poor and beer pretty watered down. also it takes a long time to get a beverage in the restaurant, and they dont let you just go get your own. we are not air condition people and the fan and open windows were enough but on one very hot day we turned it on to realize that the AC really wasnt very strong, nor the mini bar ref ridge. not worth standing in a line to beg for that. the customer relations desk , only 2 for thousands of guests was a long wait. also checkout was torture, a huge line and one person checking people out, explaining the shock of the charges, phone calls, special drinks and massive taxes, to each person. that took 20 minutes in line . we moved over to a condo down the way in akumal beach we found on a walk for the last week with a kitchen and were able to eat reasonably minus the crowds and the feeling of being in an artificial vacation world. the resort is Cabo. Tulum, and Akumal, meaning its three resorts in one, not geographically placed by those names. there is also a couple "prestige" buildings, and across the road a private condominium area. really , for such a beautiful part of the world with so much to see you have to be pretty lame to squeeze yourself into this very anonymous setting. ps, my daughter had a massage, 65$ for 20 minutes. internet was 12$ day for slow slow (unable to download anything) and the 38$ bottle of wine we bought was grape cleaning solvent .it was fun to be together, and thankfully we had a car and left every morning to go to nice beaches, towns, ruins, etc on our own. we had a great trip by ignoring the place and just using it for a place to sleep and get breakfast and some beers at night.

We just got back from this resort and I must say, if this place is a 5 Star resort, standards are pretty low.
Let's start with the ala cartes. We tried booking them the first day we got there. It was disappointing to discover that you had absolutely no say as to which restaurant you wanted, what days you wanted to go or the times you wanted! ALL the prime times (6:30-7-30) were booked! Having small children meant it was difficult to have dinner at 9:00. The lady booking our ala cartes wasn't even apologetic. She was unfriendly and her only response was a shrug and a "everything is booked"!
In terms of alcoholic drinks, unless specified, expect it to be watered down.
Want to have a seat by the beach or the pool? Better wake up at 6 am to get them! Though signs are everywhere telling vacationers NOT to reserve chairs, this rule is completely ignored. If you are not out there by 7:30, you will not find a place to sit. Do you really want the stress ON YOUR VACATION of having to wake up early just to have a place by the pool or beach?
Though buffets offer a great variety of food selections, STAY away from raw sushi. Their standards of what passes is NOT the same as what food inspectors would consider a pass in Canada or the U.S. if you have a weak stomachs, you will likely get pretty sick from their sashimi.
Overall, the resort is beautiful and most of the staff were friendly but I would definitely not call this a 5 Star Resort. I've been to Mexico at least 4 times now and this was the first time I've been dissatisfied.

This was our 5th time at the Grand Bahia, we stayed in the Golden section in Akumal this time. Our room was close to the pool and we even had an ocean view. The Japanese Restaurant in Coba was an amazing experience and the food was excellent. La Goumet in Coba was also great. Loved the new water park at Coba, the kids had a lot if fun. The staff is amazing, very friendly and always smiling. Our kids went swimming with the dolphins at the resort and said it was the best part of their vacation. The entertainment by the pool was great everyday there was something going on, I loved the water aerobics everyday, great way to cool off. All of the pools at the resort are beautiful. Miami Vice was my favorite drink, they have amazing coffee, loved the cappuccino with cinnamon. Transportation around the resort was convenient and easy, although sometimes we just enjoyed walking around, the grounds are absolutely beautiful. I loved the towel art left on our bed everyday, so creative. Our daughter had her hair braided near the beach and both kids got henna tattoos, and had fun painting ceramic art figures. We had a great two weeks and will definitely return next year for Spring Break! Thank you for a wonderful holiday!

We had our wedding here. It was really great. The food and service were very good. The wedding location on the beach was beautiful. We had 40 guests and they all had a great time. The wedding dinner and cake were delicious. And the pool-side reception and dance was really fun and a beautiful setting. The resort's wedding coordinator and staff were very helpful and made our wedding day very special.
Also, Areciffe Studio (their on-site photography company) did a great job with the photos. I definitely recommend getting the photo books done as well - they're beautiful.
I would definitely recommend this resort as a wedding destination, or a holiday for family/friends or couples.

Please pardon the title... this was a great trip Feb 2013. You cannot go wrong with this hotel (complex) in my opinion. We've been to a few all inclus and this place is in the top 10%. Read reviews and form your own opinion. From where I stand, what is good far outweighs any bad you may read on these pages. OK Mr. negative, here's a few speed bumps : for 4 hours out of a 2 week trip, we had no hot water, also, no bottled water left in the fridge 2 or 3 days, the hotel mistakenly locked us out of our room at the end of week # 1. We didn't let these tiny inconveniences mess with some fun times. My last beef is one I blame squarely on the selfish, inconsiderate twits who leave towels on loungers for hours when they are not even at the location. Shame on your small sunburned heads. May you get tourista.
Now the good. Iguanas, Coatis, Agoutis, parrots, fish you can almost touch, big honking turtles just up the road in Akumal, great snorkeling, parasailing, Xcaret, Tulum, Coba, Hacienda, beer pong at the swim-up bar, Arlequin, Japanese, Italian and Mexican restos, friendly staff. OK, full stop. I never do this in reviews..but... our pals Jose Luis and Elena added to the charm of this hotel. We had a fun afternoon with Amla at the small backwards pool.
The staff are above average here. Get your Spanish going and enjoy the experience. At least try to gab a bit. Mucho gusto is a fine thing. Gracias and por favour go a long way.
We didn't mind the 1 hour bus ride from Snakepit to Turtle. People told us those were the translations of Cancun and Akumal. We believe them. You cunning and clever linguists can correct me.
Weather was wonderful. That's part of what you go for, right ? We had a few very windy/wavy days. So, we sat in warm water at the pool, played trivia and frisbee, consumed adult beverages, enjoyed the vibe...beats working.
Relaxing. Clean. Easy. Fun. Surprising. Warm. We met people from many places on our little green/blue spinning ball of a planet. All in a little corner of it to enjoy an easy-going time and place. On the buses was fun to me, relax and quit whining. Ate well, drank my share, felt my soul soar with each crash of the waves. Pick some other place or miss out on a lovely go. Up to you, amigas and amigos.
As the immortal Stompin Tom Connors said....."Come where you're to and you'll be where you're at." Point is, even if that wasn't his line...have fun at GBP Akumal.

We stayed at the Grand Bahia Principe Akumal in early April with 2 other families (total in our party was 11). We booked through Apple Vacations and had a good experience with them. I would consider booking another vacation through Apple.

The Riviera Maya area was beautiful. Lots to do with for both kids and adults, wonderful beaches and great snorkeling. If we went back to that area I would stay at another resort. Our stay at the Grand Bahia Principe Akumal was disappointing.

First the good:

We had some stand out service from a few people, Maria at the breakfast & lunch buffet and Karen in the lobby bar both helped to make our stay pleasant. Can't thank Priscilla in Guest Services, enough for being our advocate with the hotel management and the bell boys were always helpful too.

The grounds were beautiful and beaches (though rocky in places) were nice and clean. There were plenty of loungers available even though the hotel was a full capacity. During our stay it was quite windy so they were not letting sail boats or kayaks out in the ocean. But we did enjoy our jet ski ride.

The food and drink were plentiful. There were lots of choices at the buffet. Not the best food I've ever had but definitely better than expected given the reviews I read prior to going. The a la carte restaurants were excellent.

Now the bad:

First, even though we sent an email a couple of weeks in advance, they initially did not honor our request to have the 3 families traveling together located near each other. After much discussion with the front desk staff they finally accommodated us placing 2 of us in connecting rooms and another family in an adjacent building.

One of the rooms had no problems. 2 of the rooms had no air conditioning and refrigerators that were not working. When we informed the front desk we were told that the refrigerators were meant to only hold drinks not keep them cold. We were told that if we wanted cold drinks we should go get some ice or come to a bar! Also despite repeated attempts to "fix" the air conditioning (which seemed to consist of someone coming into our room, toggling the off/on switch and confirming that it wasn't working) it never worked in either room the entire stay. The front desk staff were rude and not very knowledgeable.

I finally complained to our Guest Relations rep. Priscilla. She got them to replace our refrigerators and had them send someone to actually come out to look at the air conditioner aside from toggling the off/on switch. Even though the a/c never worked at least I knew Priscilla was trying to get them to fix it. I think that the management at this resort just doesn't care.

The beds were hard and my back was killing me by the end of the trip.

Other than the staff mentioned above, most of the service we received was mediocre to rude. We asked for new towels at the pool hut and had them thrown at us. Try getting a drink at the buffet during dinner and you had to wait 20 minutes before someone would come to ask what you wanted.

Overall we loved the area just not the hotel.
