This was our second visit to Grand Bahia Akumal, and it was just as wonderful as the first time we visited. The hotel, food and staff were excellent. From swimming with the dolphins, to jet skiing, to just relaxing by the pool, we were pleased with it all. We had visited this time with another family and they were just as pleased as we were. There was so much to do especially by the Coba pool area. They have the BEST entertainment. The guys were so great.. they always included everyone in the activities, and even when they would see you later that day at the show, or walking around, they would come over and make us laugh or high-five the kids and tell us to come back again the next day. They really make the resort so much fun... My kids loved Sergio!!! If you want a quiter area, then visit the Akumal pool. As for the beach, the activities are between the Coba and Tulum beach areas. Be careful you do not sit at the beach area that is labeled Sian Kian. That is an exclusive area that serves drinks by the beach only guests who are staying in that section. The trams can be a bit confusing at first, but you will get the hang of it. Just yell out where you want to go, and they will tell you where to stand. We enjoyed LeGourmet restaurant and Mikado. The best breakfast and lunch were at coba. Great kids slides on Coba side as well. If you want to visit Playa Del Carmen, make sure you take the tram to the Hacienda and there are taxis waiting there and will take you there for 1/2 the price of what they offer at the bellstand. It should only be 3- $5.00 per person max. When you get to Playa Del Carmen, visit Mamitas beach club. It is very chic, and they have great music and food there. It is on 22nd street. The shows at night were so much fun! Be sure to catch them each night (except they are not on thursdays). check out the privilege club. Make sure you see Rossy. She is awesome. If you book a one hour lecture to see what it is about, with no obligation, they will give you 2 free dolphin experiences. Make sure you do the dolphin push. It was so worth it! You can take what they give you and add some money to do this one. If you have any questions about the resort I would be happy to answer them!

Room Tip: Be sure to stay on either the 2nd or 3rd floors. (I always put a towel down at the bottom of the doo...

Read so much . Couldn't complain about a thing. Our travel agent was Apple, excellent. The evenings were chilly and breezy , they donot sell sweatshirts. I would not bring an American Express, most would not accept for purchasees under $50. The beaches were beautiful. The staff works so hard, tips are so appreciated, $1 is like a million. Sunscreen bring no less then 50 and they donot sell zinc anywhere. Snorkel gear and a football is a great thing to pack if you have room is fun although they do rent them but for only one hour at a tiime. The food was amazing and we drank the water and brushed our teeth. Noone was pushy within our resort for excursions etc. There is alot of walking but shuttles are always running everywhere, you miss one, there is one coming right behind " no worries".W were traveling with our teenage daughter and her boyfriend, never once did the staff speak in spanish other then to say hola to us as a family, very respectful as she passed and she is beautiful. They were all courteous and kind and helpful. We will so go back and would recommend this resort to anyone. We felt safe , wish we knew more spanish but we will next time. Excursions we did were Snorkling with Turtles: amazing so worth it and Swam with dolphins and interacted with manatees off site : Totally amazing. Parasailing: Just Beautiful

We stayed at the Grand Bahia Principe Akumal in March 2013 for 5 nights. We were very pleased with every aspect of our stay. The location is 1 1/2 hour ride from Cancun. Secluded quiet area away from busy Cancun. Resort is HUGE! We ate a different place for breakfast, lunch and dinner every day as you can use all of the resort's amenities ...Tulum, Coba etc..transportation is easy to use and readily available. Walking is an option too for some exercise. Rooms were very clean, service was exceptional, they went out of their way to make your stay special. Margaritas at CHECK in, served coconut water from fresh coconuts on the beach, pineapples carved into containers to serve your drink in. Based on some of the negative reviews, if you're used to extreme luxury and 500 count thread sheets, this probably isn't the place for you....but if you're an average Joe looking for a GREAT VACATION, you won't be disappointed, this place is beautiful, clean, amazing beach, great food and HUGE variety, friendly staff, feels safe and secluded lots to keep you busy or perfect to just relax! Mikado a la carte Japenese restaurant in Coba is a must! Great experience and food!

Very big resort and friendly people. Some personal feedback below.

- We would have liked to go into the pool but the water was too cold. While speaking to other’s it would appear that it was a common thought. We did find it strange that the resort did not have an outdoor hot tub for all to use, this would have been ideal.

- The quality of the food and wine at the restaurants (Carte) was not to our liking. However, the staff was very friendly and attentive, impressive. This is the first time that we actually liked the buffet better than the restaurants at a resort.

- First time that we had to pay for the room safe key.

- The staff was very friendly and eager to assist, again I am very impressed.

- Good size room with fresh towels and clean room. Washroom was a little small for two but it's ok we did not spend that much time in the bathroom :)

- Outside of the resort I found that no matter what excursion you wanted to do you could not take pictures, they would take pictures that you had to buy into a package (EXPENSIVE). Really.....if you buy your ticket for the excursion you should be entitled to take pics. of whatever you want. This is a money grab and the tourism association should establish some reasonable guidelines.

- Regarless of the bad media on Mexico we did not feel unsafe at any time. Resort was guarded with security guards at the entrance.

- Playa del Carmen was full of people and great shopping.

Oh, where to start... You have probably read all about the hotel in previous reviews, but I can confirm that all the positives are spot on!! We stayed in the Akumal-part and we loved it; myself and two good freinds. There are, as you might know, three hotels in one; Akumal, Tulum and Coba, and the Sian Ka'an is also right across from the others.
The hotel complex is HUGE... but the trains that take you where ever you want is great, and easy to jump on and off, just signal to the driver and he will stop, smile and ask where you are going... Getting around the complex is not a problem.
The pools are magnificent - especially the large one at Akumal, and whatever you do, jump in and swim over to Elmer in the swim-up-bar and he will make you a cocktail of your desire - this guy is great!!
The food is also very good either in th.ddd.e massive buffet or in the nice a la carte restaurants, where you can choose from Italian, Mediterrainean, Japaneese, Brazilian etc... all quite good!
The ground are amazingly clean - how they manage to keep the LARGE area spotless is just impressive!!
The Hacienda Dona Isabel is a must visit, both at daytime for shopping and at night for festive music and disco... if you are not in the disco-mode, you can return down to the hotel and the 24-hour snack-bar, there will always be someone threre who is drinking a beer or just having a good time with friends and new friends :-)

The staff, everyone from housekeeping, bellboys, traindrivers, maintenance, reception, waitors and so on deserved a big thank you, because of their smiles, friendliness and great service!!

Oh, the beach is also very nice :-)

A lovely hotell for families - the kids will have a blast, there are pools, kids club and there are as mutch soda and ice cream they can eat!! Lovely to see the kids have such a great time!!
And is't also great for friends, couples and everyone who just want to have a relaxing, enjoyable vacation in beautiful enviroments in Mexico... What out for the cute coatis, they love those french fries :-) But don't worry they are harmless, just as the iguanas who wobble along the area :-)

Highly recommended!!

Room Tip: Just enjoy every minute, talk to people you don't know, everyone is there to relax and have a gr...

Three and a half stars.

We booked this Gran Bahia hotel based on our experience at Gran Bahia Esmerelda in Punta Cana. (see my review). I figured a wonderful experience at one Gran Bahia would give me some equal footing at another. I was wrong.

I read all the other reviews before booking and I thought we had another winner. Not really.

Here's my breakdown of the good and bad and the eh:

The good:

--Excellent location-- nice beach and beautiful grounds. The beach was a bit rocky in spots as others have noted. Nothing terrible.

--Friendly bartenders at the swim up bar!

--Dolfinarium was an amazing experience

--El Pescador and Mikado for a la carte dinners-- VERY nice. Good food-- great waiters. (Even though they made an error on our reservation for Mikado and we weren't seated at a show table. I felt since it was their fault they would give us something. They didn't.)

The bad:

-- Rude front desk staff-- not helpful, not friendly. It seemed like we were bothering them anytime we asked them something.

--Even though we emailed some room preference 3 months in advance-- no only did they ignore them but when I asked upon arrival-- Mariela(?) said Building 47 & 48 have an additional charge (they don't).

--Did I mention the rude front desk?

The eh...

--The buffet was OK. Have had better. Often food was cold.

--Getting the attention of waiter at the buffet (even though we tipped throughout our week) was difficult.

--Don Pablo- mediocre food, poor waiter service

Overall, not a resort we will revisit.

My husband and I booked a last minute 4 night getaway through Transat Holidays (from Toronto) from March 28 – April 1st, as we have stayed at this resort before (the Tulum section) we thought it was the perfect place to return to for a short trip. Our last time here was 5 years ago and in September. We were surprised how different this experience was. All 4 resorts were at capacity and we felt that Tulum and Coba were very busy (line ups for buffets, no tables in lobby to have a drink at around dinner time etc..) Akumal was the quitter resort and we liked it that way. We were always able to get a spot on the beach in front of our room (Golden section villa 66) but the chairs were gone by 10am and there was a line up most of the time at the beach bar by us. Food was good, service was hit and miss at the buffets and the room was good. The beach is nice but rocky and hard to go for a walk down the beach as the sand has tiny shell pieces that hurt to walk on with bare feet. We ventured to the secluded bay to the right of the resort but the waves were too rough to see anything snorkeling – we were however greeted by a pit bull which was scary as we were they only ones there but we ignored him and him us. Snorkeling at Akumal Beach was amazing and we saw 3 sea turtles – we went first thing in the morning by collectivo and beat the tours in the water which I would recommend. Overall, this is a good resort for the money if you don’t sweat the little things but I would not call it a 5 star and probably would try someone new if we return to Mexico.

Room Tip: Villa 66 is perfect for leaving the patio door open at night (on higher floors) and listening to the...
