We went as a family of 6 adults and a 2 year old. We returned a week ago and because we value opinions on the forum, we wanted to share our experiences..
Check in..Golden club with Transat Vacations..was easy, though I had requested a room be available for the little one to sleep they could not do this. But did get us in as soon as possible.
we were blessed to be given section 65 which is right on the beach..how we scored that, luck from what i hear.
Rooms, large, very clean, balcony overlooking hammocks, jetted tub half glass shower, which caused alot of water on the floor ..which in turn made it a little slippery..Slept with air on but when in room during the day, we loved leaving the patio door open for the breeze..great sound..
beds hard like everyone says, but topper made it better.
Beach..wonderful. We found the golden club area to be much quieter, only 3 rowes deep of palapas vs many more further down..loved the little bar there where we could get cocconut milk..
not as rocky as i had heard, but this little lagoon area was so nice and secluded..going into the water on the right you didnt need water shoes..
we also snorkelled at the lagoon past this section to the right where it was pretty good..not a far walk but a rocky walk.
Ala Cartes..wonderfull. we had emailed ahead and booked our 4 with Vanessa...best was Don Pablo, though it took more time to enjoy the little one did get tired of waiting..best Spanish coffee..great show wih it. Mikado was second favorite and filling..show table best part of restaurant. Had a supper at Italian and the buffet was really nice..meal was pretty good. Finally, Grand Tortuga, meat lovers..just ok.
Staff. Fantastic and accomodating and friendly.
Excursions..we took a cab to Yal Ku lagoon about 15 mins from hotel..had been here 12 years ago when it was pristine and non touristy, just a little shack with a man collecting a dollar..now its 12 US dollars, many people and still amazing. I liked the fact you could rent masks and snorkels for 5US for the day..though we always travel with ours.
Tram/train..great way to travel though it appears a bigger resort then it actually was. the farther rooms from the beach truley were only a 8 min walk and Coba was a good 15 min to their pools.
Our grandson loved going on the train and wanted to ride it as many times as possible..great entertainment for him.

Overall, fantastic holiday.. loved the large resort as we love being able to ramble around..loved visitng all the different bars/restaurants and entertainments at night..
If I could change something it would be a recommendation box at lobby for client suggestions..such as we always had to ask at the lobbys which level to get the trolly to Coba or Tullum..my daughter suggested they put signs on the pillars on each level to stop the confussion, which there alwasy was..

Highly recommend this resort.

Room Tip: room section 65 is on the beach but also liked the little bar and jaccuzzi area near 77 which led ri...

We arrived at the Grand Bahia Principe Akumal with voucher in hand from cheapcaribbean showing that our reservations were at that resort. They explained that they did not have a room for us, and thus were "up-grading" us to their sister resort up the hill - Sien Ka'an. Problem was the sister resort was not on the beach. I had spent hours on the internet doing research on the best beach. The purpose of our vacation was to be on the beach and to swim. Although it is true that the so-called up-grade was to a more expensive property (which was quite nice with fabulous food), it is also true that the beach was a 5 minute wait for a tram, and a 10 minute tram ride. So, not exactly ON the beach. I begged and pleaded and made a fuss and eventually cried. I asked how this could have happened. I had proof of my reservations. They blamed cheapcaribbean. they said that cheapcaribbean had overbooked. I said that was absurd, because surely companies of that magnitude have a system for dialogue with one another, and that a travel company would not book at a hotel if the hotel told them they were full. Finally, after the 4th manager spoke to me, after 2 hours and much fuss on my part, the manager promised me that she would get us a room on the 3rd day of our 5-day vacation. We took the room at Sien Ka'an with a promise of wifi both in the room and in the lobby. it was never available in the room. I spent way too many hours talking to resort staff explaining the problem of no wifi, including 2 hours one night with the computer tech in our room, but still unable to fix it. The internet was only infrequently available in the lobby. Finally, on the 3rd day, I was allowed to move to the Akumal resort, and had 2 lovely days being on the beach with OK food (not as good as the up-grade resort). I bought an in-room internet-service for $35, But similar to the sister resort, was unable to access from the room. At check-out time I asked for that charge to be taken off the bill. They explained that it was an outside company and thus they were not responsible for the lack of service, and refused to take the charge off the bill. So, all in all, the beach was lovely (though the water was exceedingly shallow), the activities were fun, the staff was pleasant, the room was wonderful (better than the up-graded room). But the resort refused to take any responsibility for their errors (both in not having a room for me for half my vacation and also for the internet not working in the room), and that leaves a bitter taste in my mouth. If nothing is their fault, whose fault is it?

Room Tip: best room is, of course, ocean view.

at first our impression of mexico was -10 and this was due to the horrendous airport security, then we arrived at the Bahia and was transformed into the true attmophere of the Mayan people who are the most freindly and a liitle reserved. the facility's here are A1 and the food could not be betterboth in the buffet and the Ala Carte's we stayed in the Golden section once again and thought that it was well worth the few extra pennies. thanks to the co-operation of the public relations dept and the help from the transat personel who did make our stay one to remember.we were going to try another hotel chain and we are glad we did not, we will stick with the Bahia.

I am wondering if other travellers saw many cats while they were on vacation at this resort. I only heard of a dilute calico mother cat with 3 kittens, plus a grey male and a black cat near the Gourmet Restaurant. I am hoping to convince the hotel management to work with local animal rescues to spay and neuter the cats, and provide a feeding station. I would love to hear from other travellers who feel the same way about protecting companion animals on resorts.

We have just returned from another trip to this hotel. Wonderful experience. My daughter, son, wife, granddaughter myself and husband travelled. All ages ranging from 16-70 yrs. All are thrilled and had a good experience. Activities for everyone. Great variety of good foods for the healthy and the overindulgent. Refreshments of every kind. Coba is one of three resorts all situated so that one can pass from one to the other and enjoy the different ambiance. The staff and organization at this hotel, is wonderful, and counteracts all the negative comments from media about Mexican people. These dedicated Mexican/Mayan people show one how appreciative they are for the least little bit of respect you show them! The facilities are spotless, kitchen and food preparation topnotch. A La Carte's another whole experience! Shopping area on the property and nightclubs. Security on the grounds. Little trams to take you all over the resorts. Occasional sighting of wildlife and beautiful coloured birds to see. To add to this the idealic turquoise shades of the Carribean ocean to greet you, it is a paradise. Thank you again to the staff that we had the pleasure of meeting once again. Feb 6 thru 13, Third time at the resort, will return next year, staff very helpful and ready to please. Beach is great, enough chairs for everyone, so many different areas to swim, snorkel, and view fish. Recommend taking the walk to the Chemuyil Beach just south of the resort, follow the path, were shoes, great hideaway, and snorkeling area. Only negative is the resort is 1 hour away form the airport but it is well worth the ride.
