We went for our honeymoon and loved this resort. Good food with lots of selection. Good service! The beach was a little disappointing but if you head to the Coba side its much better. Very large property and you can use all the facilities of all 3 resorts. We paid a little extra for a upgrade and it was worth it. Don't even second guess!

I returned from GBP akumal this morning & just have to write a review.
The rooms are a little tired & have a lock & key type safe, however perfectly acceptable considering you don't want to spends your hols in the room.
This hotel is massive but very easy to get around. There are frequent 'buses' which will take you across to visit the other hotels - Tulum & Coba.

The food in the buffets were varied & the meat & fish were to high/good quality (not chewy & no bones). The buffets would benefit from microwaves for customers to 'blast' their food & have it a little hotter but otherwise everything was very tasty.

You must book the a la cartes as soon as possible. The Japanese was fantastic - ask for a show table, not all tables have food cooked in front of you. It does get very hot though, the air conditioning is not sufficient to keep you cool. The brazalian was amazing. They slice different meats from a skewer at your table. This is a definite for anyone who loves beef, chicken, turkey, pork etc. We went twice. The second time, we had a light breakfast , no lunch & had a 7.30 table. We skipped the starter (buffet style - fantastic but we wanted to try a few more meats than we did the first time). It is cooked to perfection. We did try the Mexican but found it a little mild. The fish restaurant was unbelievable tasty too. One thing all the a la cartes have in common is that they are extremely hot (possible no air conditioning?). Men need to wear long trousers & shirts, girls are fortunate enough to be able to wear anything cool & filmsy.

The beach at akumal is a little stony but is very peaceful & beautiful. I'd recommend wearing sandals into the sea. The sea was warmer than the pools and fish swim around you. You don't need to be deep (between knee & thigh level) & you'll see them. No need for snorkel gear either! Tulum beach has less stones.

The snack bars are that - serving hotdogs, burgers, fries, nachos etc. & it's 24hrs too. they'll happily cook whole pizzas to order when times are quieter.

There are premium spirits - barcardi, smirnoff vodka, disaronna but they also make fantastic cocktails too. The don't taste alcoholic but they are. If it's during the day the bar tenders will ask if you want it alcoholic or not. Fresh coconuts are available from the furthest bar on Akumual beach (near rooms/villas 66). Wine in the restaurant is also nice. If you want to you can purchase bottles too.

The Entertainment team were really hard & make a huge effort to interact with all holidaymakers. Diego was fantastic. He works so hard & is always fresh & full of energy. He'll be playing with kids one minute, then getting the adults involved in daily activities the next. The evening entertainment is typical all-inclusive - lots of dancing & miming going on, plus the usual Mr & Mrs shows. All light entertainment and breaks the evening up. The live music bars vary in quality. I'd personally say the one in Tulum is better than Akumal.

The hacienda offers some shopping (5th ave is cheaper). There's a feista night on Thursday - it's something different to do. the tribal dancing is very good.

We visited the Coba ruins & the guide gave us alot of interesting information, however it wasn't worth the £75 each we paid. You can get into the ruins for 57 pesos each (less than £3) & you can hire a guide when you are there (i don't know the cost) but I'm sure you can do the trip far cheaper. The Thomson/First Choice tour also take you to a Mayan village & a cenote for a little dip & includes lunch but it's rather over-priced. The ruins are good to see & I'd definitely recommend taking some time out & visiting them.

This is a clean & friendly hotel despite it's size it has maintained high levels of customer service & satisfaction. There's always plenty to do both within the various hotels or by hopping on a bus/ catching a taxi and exploring the area. The hotel is very large & there are a few 'pets' about the place - raccoons, lemurs, iguanas, lots of birds and even a white eagle too & not forgetting the fishes too. Excellent holiday, wonderful hotel. I hope to return someday.

I'm happy to answer any questions...

we was looking forward to this holiday and have to say we was not disappointed. it ticked all the boxes and more. We stayed at villa 75 in the Akumel part of the resort. which were towards the back of the resort but very quiet and a close walk to the beach but with the transport provided to get us around the resort it did not matter that we was far away from main Lobby.
Our rooms were very spacious and had everything you could need including an iron & ironing board. One of our group had difficulties with the shower being over the bath as they have disability problems but that was soon fixed by the hotel and they moved them the next day to a room with a walk in shower at villa 50 close to the main Lobby.
The choice of restaurants was really good given that you could eat in any one of the Buffet restaurants on the resort or beach snack bars. The choice in the buffet restaurants was really good and i cannot understand why some people would complain and if there was something you wanted you only had to ask and it would be provided, for example i like soft boiled eggs and i only had to ask and they went and made them for me.
We used 4 of the Al a Carte restaurants, The mexican, The Gourmet, The Italian and the japanese, all were really good and the service was impeccable.
The entertainment was great as you could go to the main shows which are done every night and then go to the lobby bars where entertainment was still ongoing, a huge thank you to Jose & Tony in the Pakkel Bar who for a few nights shared their stage with My husband George and his brother Tom. At 11pm to midnight it was great to get to go to the Hacienda and again listen to a live band while the animation team got up and showed us how to salsa, then if you wanted you could stay on till 2,30am in the disco. Another bonus to this resort is you can get branded spirits and cocktails as part of your all inclusive.
The Pools, we never had a problem getting a lounger around the pool or on the beach. And to have the choice of so many pools was great either quiet pools or the activity pool.
I have to compliment the whole team of employees at this resort as they were all extremely amazing, always happy and never tried to shrug you off, just always pleasant and willing to help with anything.
Sylvia from the guest relations was another stand out for me, she is a perfect example of how a guest relations member should be, although i am sure the whole guest relation team is outstanding Sylvia was the person who dealt with all our enquiries.
The organisation at this hotel is superb easy check in and check outs and no un-necessary hanging around.
we took excursions to Coba and Xcaret, the stand out one was Xcaret a suberb day. Two of our group went to Coco Bongos in Playa del Carmen and had an amazing evening.
We used the local buses to go to Playa del Carmen as while we was there a Jazz festival was on the beach, it was a great night so if you are going here check out the internet for the Riviera jazz festival a great free night. we also went to Akumel beach and snorkelled there great to see Turtles, Stingrays and Barracuda's only a short bus trip from the resort, well worth the 30 pesos fare.
So in summary a great resort with great facilities, thanks to everyone for making our holiday one to remember.

Room Tip: I think all the rooms are of the same standard, and with the transport around the resort it does not...

We returned this year for our second visit to the Akumal section of the resort the first 2 weeks of July (late review). We fell in love with this resort on our first visit. The first time we were in the golden club section which was great with a sea view room, this year we were not in the golden section but that did not detract from our holiday. The only problem we had was that the air conditioning was a bit week but this didn't really bother us much.

The staff were amazing and very friendly the food was great and the resort is very clean, i could go on and on about the resort but keeping it short. All in all a fantastic resort and can't wait to return for our 3rd visit on the 1st of July 2013 for 3 weeks this time and in the golden club again :)

I honestly can't understand how people can come away from here with nothing but good memories.

We stayed in the Tulum section of the resort, but spent a lot of our time in the Akumal section. I preferred the beach and pools at Akumal, while my DH preferred the Tulum waves. We ate lunch here on most days, and ate at the Frutos del Mar..food and staff were great. (DH thought the portions were too small)lol. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend or stay in this part of the resort myself.

a group of 7 of us stayed in the gran bahia Principe Akumal and all 7 of us loved this holiday. the weather was beautiful for us don't think we saw a day below 27 degrees and this is winter for them! the good thing about this hotel is that with it being so big there are so many places to eat drink and even shop, not only that it is so easy to get around the full complex (all three hotels) with the little shuttle trains running every couple of minutes. ill start off with the food, there is a very large variety of food (a lot that i wouldn't tend to choose from) however they cope with every bodies tastes and i never had a problem including no after affects if you know what i mean which for in the Caribbean is a first for me as I've stopped in other hotels and had "bad affects" we shall call it from the food. Anyway moving on from that i would advise booking your a le carte meals early and split them up so that you don't get bored of the buffet as it pretty much stays the same with the odd change. out of the restaurants i would recommend in 1. the japanese!!!!! make sure you go from starter to dessert was gorgeous its not all sushi like i thought it would be i had chicken skewers for starter with asparagus and main i had chicken and mignon (which i didn't know what it was) turned out it was sirloin steak, never had steak like it was gorgeous so much so we changed some of our other a le cartes to this to have again, also as a heads up to anyone who s going to this restaurant i would recommend the choc ice cream as it turned out to be like a profiterole but a lot nicer!! 2. brasillian and 3. mexican as the service in the mexican was 2nd to none!

As for the rooms we had a lovely room which we had already upgraded before getting there direct through our travel agents for a little cost and i would definitely do the same again, we stayed in block 56 which was very close to the 24 hour snack bar which is located a 30 seconds walk from the beach but isn't a sea view as palm trees and other trees are in the way.

As for shopping there is the hasienda at the front of the complex which can be more expensive than other places we visited but for a cheap one off item it isn't too bad saves the journey to playa del carmen 5th avenue (which i did about 4 times) worth the look around. which is 40 ish minutes away on a collectivo (little mini bus) which costs 40 Paso each way per person (about £2) the taxis at the front will try to get you to use them but when there was just two of us they was charging 25 dollars which was like an extra 14 pound on top of what you would pay for the collectivo.

as for the alcohol they do have premium labels for example smirnoff vodka which for once was actual smirnoff and not some other rubbish poored in a smirnoff bottle if you asked for it you got it, i did tip often which i think helped but they are happy to help and was great.

Excursions: you will see one called UNDERWATER WORLD do NOT go on it its between 50 and 75 dollars per person to go swimming with turtles and visit a cenote, the swimming with turtles is at akumal beach which is 10 minutes in a collectivo or taxi down the road and can be done by yourself for the same experience but for the price of a taxi it does not cost to go on the beach or in the sea and i gaurantee you will see turtles they are around 100 yards out upto a catamaran which you dont need to travel any further out you will definitely see them aswel as sting rays and possible barracuda i would recommend doing this but dont buy the excursion its nothing you cant do for free which unfortunately we didn't know of and all 7 of us paid the 75 dollars so 525 dollars (roughly is around £350 which could of cost as little as 560 paso (£28) for all of us if we had took the collectivo!

One excursions i would recommend is coco bongo no matter what age you are do it you will have a fantastic night, only four of us did this as one couple had a child and its over 18's only, seriously go tho this night we booked with our rep (thomsons first choice) and went vip on a monday (fridays and saturdays are more expensive by 20 dollars each) vip we had our own little balcony and seating area next to the stage and down a little brilliant seats and a little dancing area privately for us, the waiter was excellent a little too eager at times but suppose i would rather have him eager than not around at all, we did tip pretty well that night also this may have been the reason but i would do the same again as we was never without a drink and he couldn't be more helpful!

one last thing if you do book one or more excursions with thomson and one of them being a dolphn trip which we booked the silver trip when we arrived we got a 30 dollars off voucher which we used on another excursion so do the dolphins 2nd or 3rd if your going to do them, this happened to us but they don't advertise it although everyone that did it got one so may have just been a special at that time not sure.

final point the akumal beach isn't that fantastic, nice views but too many stones but perfect for sunbathing as it never got that busy ( i stayed at this beach, however if you like soft sand get one of the little shuttle trains from the lobby and go to tulum beach that was a lot nicer to walk on.

all in all i would rate this hotel 4.5 out of 5 as the only thing that let it down was the entertinment on a night wasn't fantastic some acts a little cringe worthy but then others was really good, the michael jackson show and like a tribute act of a lot ofcelebs like bieber, jackso, Madonna, usher Pitbull and so on (but just dancing no singing)

daytime entertainment was pretty good had something for everyone i would recommend getting involved for a good laugh

finally be prepared to see a little wildlife as there are a lot of iguanas and little monkey things and racoons specially at night time with the racoons. but all dead friendly

Room Tip: for a deluxe room block 56 was really good, if you can get colden club then block 65,66,67 are the c...
