“amazing honeymoon”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 19, 2011

we had a totally amazing time in a fantastic resort. Had read several reviews before leaving so had slight apprehension, but we cannot fault our holiday. Yes it is a long flight, but we were looked after very well on our Thomson flights. Transfer from Cancun is approx 2 hours, which we knew when we booked but you are again looked after on the coach with drinks etc and if you want to stay outside of cancun then you have to except this. Warm welcome at the hotel with a nice cocktail. Bags looked after by the staff whilst we checked in. Check in was done within 5 minutes.
To begin with i felt quite over whelmed by the size of the resort and arriving at night is quite disorientating, but we did got the the welcome meeting which helped and within a couple of days getting around between the 3 hotels is easy and the staff are always on hand to help. Make sure you explore the 3 hotels as they all offer something slightly different.

Our room was lovely and spacious and the maid service is fantastic. We left a 2 dollar tip every day except one when we forgot, but still the room was cleaned to the same standard. Great towel art. For some the stocking of the mini bar may be an issue, but drinks, water etc were all stocked up daily, but you do just get one bar of choccie and one packet of crisps, but snacks etc are plentiful throughtout the resort so you really do not want for anything. We had no issues with the air conditioning as you can adjust to suit yourself and a ceiling fan. All linen, towels etc were really clean. We did email ahead and ask for a mattress topper, which we found on our bed. We slept really well every night.

The buffet restaurants in all 3 hotels do a great selection for all your meals, with even my fussy husband finding a good selection of food. Personally we prefered the Akumal. We only went to a couple of the a la carte, as we chose to stay with the buffets, but the standard also remained high wherever we went.
Service from the staff, with the exception of one bad breakfast and one dinner was faultless. All the staff are really hard working and friendly, regardless of how they were treated by some guests who seemed to have lost the ability to say please and thank you. We had several funny conversations with their broken english and our almost non exsistant spanish!!! Remember to tip for good service (50 pesos is generally what we gave as advised by our reps) as the staff have really poor wages and the trainee staff are not paid at all.
We found the same good service at the pool/beach bars. Beach and pool areas really clean and we never had any issues finding sun beds.

Excursions:
We did a trip into Cancun to the Captain Hook - dinner/cruise/party boat. A good night out but a very long two hour trip into Cancun which we hadn't thought about when we booked. Did a bar crawl in Playa del carmen which was good, also booked an open ticket for Xcaret (Eco park) where i swam with the dolphin (has been a dream of mine for some time and loved every minute of it). The best trip was to chichen-itza which you really should do if you have any interest in the culture of Mexico. Amazing day out. If you do this trip, make sure you take some extra money for souvenirs as we found unique things we could only be bought at chichen-itza. Reps readily gave us info about the excursions.
Overall we had an amazing time and will definatley be back. If you have read other reviews which have caused you to feel worried, then don't be. 100% perfection is impossible to achieve for the vast numbers of people who visit the resort, but for us this was a perfect honeymoon.

Room Tip: all rooms are in a good location. We stayed in villa 56 (5626) which was central to everything on t...

We stayed at the GBP Coba in 2010 and last year at the GBP Akumal. We also stayed at the GBP in Puerto Plata in 2008.
Our favorite was the Akumal because we had an oceanview from our balcony and we still recieved the same professional service that we expected from this wonderful resort!
As Canadians, no complaints, just real honest suggestions to all! Expect to be treated royally and graciously from the moment you arrive at the resort and throughout your entire stay! The service and cleanliness is always a 5* accomodation. You will feel welcomed and appreciated by everyone! The food is wonderful and our favorite ala carte was the restaurant in the Tulum!
It is worth the extra few dollars to stay at the Akumal on the beach. You will be closer to the beach and everything else along with the accessibility available within the resort on the trolly's.
The rooms are gorgeous and comfortable and you will feel like it was worth every dollar spent!
We stayed in the Golden section at the Coba and it was very nice but we preferred the Akumal for the above mentions.
Overall, they were wonderful vacations and we cannot wait to get back this year.
Fellow vacationers, please respect the fact that we are gratefully able(with our health/wealth) to travel to this beautiful tropical location so be generous with our gratitude in tipping as no matter how well recieved it may be....these wonderful people are trying to do their best as we all are!
Share your stories.....relax and share your laughs with many new friends made and get to love this resort in Mexico like we did!

We really had a great time, the hotel is huge, kept clean all the time, very good food and choice of restaurants and buffet, great swimming pools, good rooms. The staff is excellent, efficient, polite and friendly, the entertainment and the guys around the pool are brilliant! Great fun! The shows at the theatre are fantastic! Don’t miss to visit Tulum ruins, Coba ruins, Akumal bay. Benjamin and Vanessa

This was our first trip to mexico and we had a fantastic stay, the staff especially adriana the first choice rep, javier the waiter and eva the room maid all did an excellent job. We did the trip to chichin itza which was a lovely day out and very informative. Both pools were fantastic, the beach had plenty of sunbeds and the fish in the sea were amazing. All the staff were very helpful and couldnt do enough for you. We stayed in block 70 it was a few minutes walk from the restaurant but the walk gave you the chance to see the wildlife but the buggies were always available. Restaurants were well stocked with plenty of choice and the a la carte restaurants, especially the Arlequin and Tequila were amazing. Cant see the problem with having to bring your own hair conditioner! All in all a perfect family holiday.

Room Tip: Accept your room, you are there for a holiday just take in the beautiful surroundings

We have just spent 15 exceptional days in this hotel.
The frame is pleasant and green and the services are of high qualities.
All the staff of the hotel is smiling and helpful.
One thank you every private individual to Edgar who manages the bar of the siren and who performed of fabulous cocktails. He is of a big kindness and is attentive with the customers.
During this travel we visited all the Mayas sites of the region and made many of snorkeling in unforgettable places.
You should not forget cenotes, turquoise blue and transparent water and kindness of Mexicans...

My husband and I returned home last Friday after spending a glorious fortnight with two of our friends at this beautiful hotel. This was our second stay at the Akumal and I just wanted to say that it was every bit as good as our previous stay. Again we were impressed by the cleanliness in all areas and also the friendliness and courtesy shown by every member of staff. Nothing was too much trouble for any of them and they were always smiling, in spite of all the hard work they put in.
Our flight had been delayed by 24 hours due to Hurricane Rina hitting the Mayan Riviera at the time we were due to land, so we were expecting some level of devastation/disruption on arrival but there was none! There were a few rainstorms in the first few days but staff were always on hand to mop up immediately in any flooded areas.
As returning guests we were treated to a bottle of champagne, a bottle of tequila and basket of fruit, which were in our room on arrival. also we had only been able to book one junior suite and one standadrd room as that was all First Choice had left at the time of booking, but were pleased to be allocated two junior suites on arrival, at no extra charge. This hotel certainly goes out of its way to treat all its guests well!
We especially enjoyed dining at the gourmet restaurants in the Akumal and Tulum, the Mikado Japanese restaurant and also the 24 hour snack bar!
We were worried that this stay would not be as good as our previous one but they have succeeded in maintaining the high standards we first saw in 2002. Well done to all the hotel team, and keep up the good work – we will definitely return in the future!

Room Tip: We were in Villa 49 this time, which is convenient for main reception, bars, pool and restaurant. La...

We stayed in the Akumal section of the Gran Bahia Principe resort from November 5 to November 12. From the flight on Transat to the airport in Cancun, to the bus service to the resort, EVERYTHING was 5-star! The check-in at the hotel was efficient, friendly and NO waiting. We were greeted at the magnificent front lobby by a welcome beverage. The bags were delivered to the rooms by friendly staff in golf-carts. Our suites were large, clean and nicely decorated. Every day, there was a bath towel on our bed folded to resemble an animal or a creature... very clever! The beds are comfortable and large. AC in the rooms AND a ceiling fan. The TV offers a ton of channels.

There is a fridge in the room with beer, chips, soft drinks etc, restocked every day!

The entertainment every night was well-worth seeing and attending. There was music after dinner, a show in a theatre every night at 9 p.m., a duet in the lounge from 10 p.m. to 11 p.m., a dance band at the Hacienda from 11 p.m., then the disco from 12 p.m. to 2 a.m.! Definitely no shortage of music and dance. At Akumal, all this is organized and arranged by a fellow named Emir... a 24-year-old dynamo with incredible vision and organizational skills. His presence at the stage shows definitely is a testament of his commitment to the resort! KUDOS, Emir and entertainment staff!

There are buffets everywhere, pools, activities, music. At the pools, staff play games, give dance lessons, lead aqua-fit, do yoga, play BINGO, play games with children, conduct Ping-pong tournaments... etc...

Every time I went to the bathroom, it seemed, there was someone cleaning it. The beaches were raked clean every morning, the bars opened promptly at ten a.m., the staff was fantastic... I have NO complaints. This was definitely a 5-star vacation.

Room Tip: Phone ahead (in Spanish if possible) and ask for rooms near each other, if there are more than two o...
