“Awesome House!”
Reviewed July 14, 2014 for a stay in July 2014

We booked Casa del Mar for a week in early July for ourselves and two of our friends. I worked with Marcia and she made the process very easy and was always available to answer questions prior to our arrival.

The drive from the airport is about an hour and fifteen minutes. The house itself has a beautiful entrance and walkway/driveway to the house and we were even more impressed when we finally got inside. The side of the house that faces the ocean has beach loungers and provides for great views no matter what time of day it is. The pool is on the back side of the house by the driveway and let's you continue to enjoy the sun even when the beachside of the house starts to get shady in the evening.

Casa del Mar also has plenty of wildlife around it, especially since the lot to the north is just jungle/plants. We saw raccoons, coatis, agoutis, a scorpion, tons of hermit crabs, etc. The house is also surrounded by palm trees and flowers.

All three bedrooms have air conditioners that will turn a hot, humid room into a freezer in short order. The rest of the house did get a little hot but we often opened the front door and both sliding back doors and the breeze would come straight off the ocean and through the house. There is a TV available but we never watched it. The kitchen has plenty of pots, pans, cutting boards, spices, etc. so it made cooking meals very easy and we didn't even have to do our own dishes, although we sometimes opted to because we felt bad when they started to stack up throughout the day. If you're staying here, familiarize yourself with what's in the kitchen before you go to the store because certain items like Microdyne for fruit/vegetable washing, charcoal for the grill, cooking oil, etc. may have been left behind by previous guests. We "donated" a few items as well upon our leaving.

The location of the house is great too. It's a short walk to both Akumal Bay and Halfmoon Bay and several restaurants. It was a hot walk somedays but it was July after all and we knew what we were getting into going this time of year.

The staff were great as well. We only saw Mari once as she somehow managed to get in and clean the house unnoticed. The gardener, Jorge, seemed to work all day. He cleaned the outdoor furniture, cleaned the pool, raked the driveway, and maintained the yard. He even cut open some coconuts for use near the end of our stay. Our security guy was Jose and he was always keeping an eye on our place while somehow making himself nearly unnoticed.

We had one issue with the house upon our arrival. We purchased a couple hundred dollars worth of food for the week only to find out that our fridge and freezer wasn't cooling properly. We ended up having the throw away some of our meat and dairy items. Once we realized that the refrigerator was simply not getting cold enough (we thought at first it was just taking additional time since we put a lot of stuff in it), we passed along a message to management in the evening and it was fixed the next day. As a result, we lost $25-50 of food and had to make an additional trip to the store to replace those items. Not a huge expense in the grand scheme of things but it would have been a nice gesture had management offered to replace some of the food we lost. The only other inconvenience is the location of the master bedroom's safe. It's in a hallway closet on the floor, making it inconvenient to access if you need to get into it frequently. The other two bedrooms had the safe conveniently located on a shelf in the actual room.

All in all, we had a great time. Everyone is our group wanted to stay longer I would return in a heartbeat... but probably opt to stay 10 or 14 days instead of seven!

“My well-traveled Mom said it was the nicest rental in which she has stayed!”
Reviewed March 3, 2013 for a stay in February 2013

We had a fabulous stay at Casa Del Mar in Akumal. The house was lovely...spotless and neatly organized. The pool in the front and the beach in the back gives you different options depending upon the sun and wind. The ocean is inaccessible from the house because of the rocks and coral, but a sandy beach is a short walk in either direction. The house is at the tip of the bay so the waves are big. The views are breathtaking from the house but especially the master bedroom on the second floor where we were lolled to sleep every night by the surf. We typically made breakfast and lunch in the kitchen and went out to dinner. We were glad that we had groceries delivered to the house prior to our arrival. There are a couple of smaller stores with limited selection and high prices. The woman who cleans the house will also prepare meals but we had some language gaps communicating with her. She wasn't able to cook on short notice. We wished we had arranged to have her cook 2-3 meals ahead of time. Visit Juan Gonzalez at Buddha Spas for the best massage that I have ever had and Gynnaku Restaurant for lionfish and chips (try to talk personally to her about her business)!
