My wife and I booked this excursion "turtles and cenotes" from our Sunwing rep at our hotel. We were picked up at the hotel and driven to Akumal beach to snorkel with the turtles. The guide was very pleasant and informed us about the excursion and what was provided (snorkel, mask and lifejacket) The turtles were present and numerous, very nice to see in their natural environment feeding on the bottom of the ocean. The one major downside .....we are avid snorkelers and brought our own gear, but we were forced to wear the lifejacket or told we could not go out on the excursion. I was very unhappy about this as the lifejacket prevents you from diving properly and my main purpose of the trip was to take underwater pictures...We were told that the lifejackets were absolutely mandatory by the government to avoid damage to the reef, however that didn't prevent the mexican photographers from not wearing them and trying to sell the pictures later...very annoying for an excursion we paid $75 for..

If you want to see tortugas while snorkeling in shallow water, this is the place to go. You didn't have to go searching all over to try to spot one. They're all around. They were beautiful and graceful and we saw many. They ate seaweed along the bottom and frequently swam to the surface to get a breath. It was a rare treat.

In many places you will find damage and dead reefs off the shore but not at this bay. Very easy to access. Mexico 307 south of Playa Del Carmen and take the Akumal exit. Go to the end of the road, park in the police station parking lot on the right. Pay a tip to the fellows who will watch the car so you know it's safe.

Now walk through the arch and follow the path to the right down to the beach. You will see floats marking the boundaries. There are shops and huts to rent equipment from, otherwise your only cost is the parking tip. Get there early so you can beat the crowds and watch these cuties have their breakfast as they love seagrass. I saw a couple of barracudas but they were not very large, only about 3ft. but it's worth keeping your eyes on them just to make sure they don't decide to take a munch!

The reef here is looking much better than what I saw off the shore of Cozumel. Lots of brain and fan coral, parrot and sargent fish and all the time in the world. Use of sunscreen is good but better to cover up if you're going to be in the water awhile as the sun is strong!

We tried snorkeling in Playa del carmen anbd Cozumel. No turtles while on both snorkeltrips they were promised... We understand you cant promise that, but some people will believe it. In Akumal we went out and just saw turtles. Turtles. And more turtles. Not busy with people at all. Go to Akumal to see the turtles.

We went snorkelling in Akumal Bay with the tour group Ocean Tours. They picked us up from our hotel on Maroma Beach and first took us to Akumal. We watched a short video at the CEA and then continued into the ocean for our snorkelling trip. There was only about 10 of us, plus a photographer and guide. We saw tonnes of turtles feeding and surfacing for air. We also saw loads of coral fish, stingrays, a barracuda and a large snapper. It was amazing!!!! We were fortunate to have arrived early in the morning so it wasn't too busy. However, once our 60 minutes of snorkelling was up and we headed back to the dive shop for a drink it was getting pretty busy. The tour included our fins, mask, snorkel and lifejacket.

After our drink we headed to a location with three different cenotes. We swam in both an open one and a partially closed one. We also hiked for a bit to see another one. We learned a lot about the Mayan traditions associated with the cenotes, which was great! After we enjoyed a drink and snack and then headed back to the resort by 2:00pm. It was such a lovely day.

They also offer the option to purchase the pictures taken during the day. It was well worth the $25.00US because the photographer got some amazing closeups.

We would definitely recommend snorkelling in Akumal, visiting cenotes and using Ocean Tours.
