We enjoyed our visit to Yal-ku Lagoon so much a couple years ago that we knew we needed to return again - this time on our own (collective + taxi) rather than through an expensive excursion. This visit was even better, since it was on our own time, and was VERY quiet on the day we went (only maybe 1 or 2 excursion groups came through).

The lagoon is an excellent place to snorkel because it has lots of variety and is safe for all ages. The entrance fee has gone up in recent years, and locker rental costs a bit extra (which we paid for simply for our phones & extra money), but plenty of people just leave their bags at the waterfront and it seems to be fine.

During this visit we were again able to see things like jellyfish, needlefish, angelfish, sergeant major, parrotfish, barracuda, blue tang, runners, wrasse, grunts, etc. As mentioned in other reviews, there isn't much in terms of coral, but the abundance of fish and the size of swimmable area in the lagoon make it exciting nonetheless.

Our snack bar lunch (pulled pork quesadillas) wasn't good, and their other menu items didn't look great, so we'd recommend to bring your own snacks and just eat them outside the front of the entrance so that you're not breaking their no-food rule.

Overall a highly recommended place to visit strictly for snorkeling - a different feel than the various reef snorkeling that you can do along the coast.

Yal-Ku is a protected lagoon near Half Moon Beach in Akumal. It is a natural lagoon: not a theme park snorkeling venue. The calm, brackish, water makes it an ideal location for less experienced swimmers. They wont be disappointed. The waters are teaming with fish. Like many places in Riviera Maya it is best to go early or late in the day to avoid crowds.

If you are new to snorkeling this is a great place in the Akumal area. It a protected lagoon so there is no surf action. Lot's of fish to see, but no coral. It is a little expensive to get in, Jan 2014 is was $14 US for adults and $10 US for kids and they do not let you bring in any food or drink. If you are staying on Half Moon bay that is fine since you have in/out privileges all day so can hop back for lower cost food.

We liked visiting this place, I loved the sculptures. I had researched about it before we left, and then it was also recommended to visit this spot by my brother. My research had showed the rates to be 75 pesos for entry, but it was actually 12 usd for entry, plus you really do need a locker here.

We went early on New years day (opens late), and snorkeled for 2 hours. Really enjoyed the masses of fish (more than off of Akumal) and the light showing through the depths. Everything is separately priced--so bring your own equipment if you have it with you to save money. I wish we did not have to wait 30 minutes to move through a short line, however am still glad that we went.
