If you have never snorkeled before then this is a good place to start. You can travel here by way of the buses that run up and down the highway and you can rent equipment at the Lagoon. However the water isn't very clear and the opportunities to see sea creatures is limited but it is very safe..

Clean, beautiful and peaceful. This is a wonderful spot to snorkel. Plenty of fish and the water is clear and fairly warm. It is easy in and out and you can spend the day there. We did eat at the restaurant which was, in my opinion, over priced. The food was mediocre and we paid less at restaurants, but it is convenient.
I think it is a must see. There are even pockets of super almost hat water as you swim across toward the beach area.

Yal-Ku Lagoon is a awesome place to start snorkeling, $10 entry fee, way better snorkelling then Xel-Ha that charges $100, (although you do get food, drinks and other options for activities at Xel-Ha.
The water visability is much better here.
Go early to Yal-Ku Lagoon, be there for 9:00 am, by Noon or so it gets a little stirred up and busy.
You need to use bio-degradeable sun screen here. There are also lockers to rent.
Clear water. no waves, very little current, fresh water runs into it. It has a break in front that prevents the waves from coming in.
Seen lots of fish here.
Well worth spending a 1/2 day here, then you can make your way over to Akumal Beach and go swimming with the sea turtles.
Just look from shore where the tour boats are going, and start swimmimg out in that dirrection.

Yal-Ku (yeah, cool!) is a real bonus to the already lovely Akumal in general. Easy to spend all day there and it is always a must do everytime we stay in Akumal. I have seen Angel Fish, Parrot Fish, Barracuda, Stingrays, Moray eels, and other fish species too numerous to list. If you are too timid to scuba dive and if drift snorkeling in more open waters tends to make you a little nauseous, as it does my wife, Yal- Ku is a protected little inlet where there is no turbulence. There is a modest entry fee, and a snack bar. If you have ever been to Xel-Ha, and had to contend with the over abundance of visitors, you will really appreciate Yal-Ku. Not as expansive as Xel-Ha, but that is why it is more of an intimate laid back experience with out all the hassle of hoards of people and fleets of tour busses.

Even for beginner snorkelers this is a great experience. You can get all the way to the Carribean at the reef or hang in the lagoon for excellent swimming and snorkeling. There is so much to see you can spend hours and it's rewally close to the town of Akumal.
