Owner description: Although the brackish water in this lagoon makes visibility difficult, there are still lots of fish and underwater caverns to explore by snorkeling or diving.

“It's OK”

This lagoon in Akumal is nice. There is a large area for snorkeling and some sitting areas. It would have a higher rating but there is an admission fee and there is a great FREE snorkeling spot in town. If you have never been it is worth a visit and the fees can help maintain the spot.

“cold, but calm”
Reviewed November 17, 2011

nice, easy snorkeling, good snorkeling for kids, good place to go on a windy way, make sure to use "special biodegradable sun screen", they won't let you use regular one; DO NOT WALK ON CORALS!!! The fine is enormous, not to mention it's bad for the corals.

“Yal-Ku Lagoon”
Reviewed November 14, 2011

Loved the lagoon! $9 to get in, and you can spend the day there snorkeling... very nice! Take a colectivo to Akumal and walk to the lagoon... about 3 km. OR take a taxi from Akumal to the lagoon.

“Loved our snorkel”
Reviewed October 25, 2011

We did yal-ku lagoon with a cenote trip too and we really enoyed our experience. We saw many different types of fish. My husband saw a huge baracudda (glad it was him and not me). The only negative is I would have liked to stay longer! It's a beautiful area! You can't go wrong with this place!

“One of the highlights of our whole trip”
Reviewed October 21, 2011

My husband and I have been snorkeling twice before, so I guess we are still considered beginners. We loved Yal-Ku. Absolutely loved it. It started raining as soon as we got there and the whole place was essentially empty. It quickly cleared up and we virtually had the whole lagoon to ourselves. The water was a little cool, but not uncomfortable. It seemed like there was a good selection of fish...we saw many different types, at least enough to keep us constantly interested. With all of the rocks, there were so many nooks and crannies to get into...a whole underwater landscape. The place overall was very well-kept and the artwork was a nice touch. We enjoyed it so much, we considered possibly going back for a second day later in our trip.
